On Friday Canterbury Golf held its Club Captains golf day not as anticipated at Rawhiti but under a late change at Tai Tapu. The Club was represented by myself and Glenys Falloon (standing in for Philippa Idour) and while we did not feature in the prizes we made a respectable showing that would have been greatly improved had my ball not been "stolen" on the 13th.
I subsequently managed to retrieve the said ball from a chastened women on the 17th after describing it in intimate detail namely the make of the ball and the markings - "a smiley face" in blue pen - such was her embarrassment that she did later shout me a beer in the Clubhouse. For those of you who have not played Tai Tapu it is well worth a visit and Friday was made more idyllic by being able to sit on the outside deck in the late afternoon sun with a splendid elevated vista of the course and to the Alps beyond.
Given the Otago visit it was a slightly smaller field out on Saturday but clearly the golf was of an exceptionally high standard in light of the points that were accumulated during the stableford round. Patrick Guo from the Junior ranks produced the best round with a magnificent total of 48 points from Jeff Suddens on 42, Jim Glass 39, Michael Kirkland 38 with a further 3 players on 36.
In the Seniors the ever consistent Joe Tiller put together 39 points from Tracey Tatom and Ray Vivian on 37 with another 3 players on 36. Scores were of a similar ilk in the Intermediates where Lawrence Wong fashioned a tidy 41 ahead of Ross Campbell 39 with Gerard Osborn & Richard Blunt back on 37 while an additional 5 players recorded 36. Perhaps it was the weather and temperatures that made the scoring so hot!!
For whatever reason there were only a limited number of two's, 6 in total, so each received $41.65 from the $250 pot. The jackpot continues to grow and now stands at $230 while nett eagles also increases after hole 8 was drawn with no takers meaning next week we start with the sum of $55 in the bank. Nearest the pins on 3 & 11 collected $30 and were paid out to Ray Vivian and Dennis Doherty respectively. On 18 Hiroshi Naka collected the Linden Leaves sponsored prize for being closest to the pin in two.
While the scoring was sensational the speed of play left a little bit to be desired so please use your best endeavours to maintain your position in the field. Realistically the loss of half a fairway through the field turns 4 hrs 15 into 4 hrs 45. Failure to hold your position in the field may lead to you being asked to stand aside, walk a hole, or be moved to the back of the field on the following Saturday - all possible outcomes that will be enforced.
