What's Happening Week of 27 April.......

Over the next few days our focus is clearly on the Wood Trowel - qualifying, dinner and final. Saturday sees a morning and afternoon shotgun start. There already looks to be a good field so if you have not already enrolled get your name down as soon as possible to help with forward planning.

The top 33 players qualify for the final round on Sunday. Any ties will be decided by count back so the field is limited. For the avoidance of doubt it is imperative that you mark your card N/A if you can not play on Sunday or if you do not want to be part of the field. The draw will be posted on the Website on Saturday evening and will be available in the Club house once the cards have been processed.

The dinner is priced at $40.00 and will involve an entree, main and cheese board together with tea and coffee. If you have any special dietary requirements that involve pumpkin, chicken, or lamb please advise Amanda as soon as possible so that alternatives will be available on the night. Ticket sales for the evening entertainment will be available from the office from later in the week. The tickets are limited so it may pay to be in early. As usual Bryan Andrews will be in charge of the entertainment assisted by Ian Wagstaff on the scoreboard with Neil Ockwell helping with the ticket paperwork. The Club acknowledges the support of these members in completing a successful event.

The Trowel evening has been a wonderful event over the past few years so let's make it work again this time.

In the interim good golfing and the best of luck........

Wellington Salver - Mixed Event........

The balmy Sunday conditions wooed a number of couples out for the Wellington Salver a four-ball best ball stableford (not par as scored by former club captain David Robinson - plus three was never going to win anyway) competition. The good early conditions prior to the nor'west getting up ensured that there were a number of good scores. With an outstanding 49 points the winners were Mel & Gina Campbell from the fast finishing Richmond's - Chris & Helen on 48. Third place on 45 decided by count back were Tony Park & J H Lee , from D H Kim & H J Shin from David Youn & Young Kim.

Only three two's were completed Mel Campbell (on 7 for 4 points) and Paddy Helmore & H J Shin both on 11 - 3 balls each. Tony Park was closest to the pin on 18 for two in the Men's grade and Jane Helmore for 3 in the Women's grade. The prizes of wine were donated by Amanda and Andrew Vincent. We welcomed Judith Parkes to the event this being the first time she has played at Shirley since the late 70's. Hopefully we will see her and John as a regular combination in future events.

As always the meal was most enjoyable with roast lamb, roast vegetables and fresh vegetables served in platters to the table, a peach crumble followed for dessert. The next mixed match is the AEG Rhodes Bowl on Sunday the 24 May 2009 - this is a Four Ball Par so at least David Robinson should have no trouble scoring it.

In the Page Trophy Grant and Janet Osborn were winners over Suzanne and Bryan Graham while the Hooper's - Leigh and Gary move through to the next round after beating David Young and Kirsty Hargraves.

Diary Date............

For those with family's or under pressure on the home front note that the Fathers & Sons and Mothers & Daughters match is scheduled for the 10 May. More information will follow next week but in the meantime block out your diary for some quality time!!

The Week That Was.......

The continuation of clement weather and a busy programme saw one of the biggest fields of the year descend on Shirley at the weekend. Top Dog and Godby Trophy were approaching their due dates and combined with a stroke round for the Australian Cup ensuring that the course was full to capacity. The Club's concern at slow play continues and a range of new initiatives is being considered including standing slow players aside and moving some groups to the end of the field. As I have said before the remedy is in your hands there is only so much the Committee can do - this weekend saw timing sheets and hints handed out.

Match of the Day for the Australian Cup was Stroke nett and won on countback by Dennis Doherty on 68. Obviously his sojourn in Melbourne at the Heritage played him into form! The Senior Grade was won by Ian Currie from Jim Paulsen and Philip Hong while Michael Hadley won the Intermediates from Shaun Xiong and Dodge Healey. In the Juniors Alan Jones again with 68 was the winner from Stu Kemp and Jeff Suddens. I suspect that Ian Currie and Michael Hadley are hitting form just at the right time.

If you were lucky enough to get a two it was worth $20.45 as there were 11 in the pool, the jackpot of $95 was won by Nic Fry. Nearest the pin on 3 was Warren Jones and in the same four Kerry Haycock was successful at 11 - $50 each. Nearest the pin for 2 on 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves (David & Bridgit Blair) was Paul Dunn while Drew Butcher was nearest for two on 18 sponsored by Benjarong Thai Cuisine (David Wallace). The nett eagles was struck on hole 17 by Stephen Boyd $90.

In addition there were a number of other important matches played out at the weekend. In Top Dog Bryan Pearson & Tony Marryatt saw off Brian Nixey & Alan Scott no mean feat albeit they went to the 19th. It's great to see newer members becoming integrated into club events so good luck to Bryan and Tony for the next round.

In a grudge match Brian Ronan and Bryan Andrews defeated Simon Yorke and Glenn Bongartz 1 up to show that experience and a lot of shots can triumph over youth. The father and son combination of Michael and David Kerr were successful over Martin Toon and Richard Pearce while on Sunday in the upset of the round Paul Needs and Ross Campbell defeated early favourites the Hicks boys Brendan and Matthew. Although requiring a cart injured Dennis Maguire and his partner Mark Bond were good enough to beat the late entries of Ian Walker & Liam Cumberpatch. All games in the first round proper should now be completed and we look forward to some interesting match ups in round two.

The Godby Trophy also moved forward and in what was a busy weekend for him Brian Ronan defeated Mike Ambrose. Ben Frampton warmed up for Metro with 2/1 victory over the consistent and frequent mid week winner Peter Sturge. In a one win one loss weekend Ross Campbell fell to Ian MacDonald at the 20th but only after he had fought back from being 4 down early on. In a 'friendly' match the smiling assassins were again successful over the Kemp/Dickson combination bragging rights now held by Marcus Annan & David Isaac.

The Club programme continues to advance and at this early stage Player of the Year is still very match an open race so play whenever you are able!!

Odd Spots......

As some of you may be aware Steve Ellis's wider family has been hit by ill health over the past few months. Steve's mother-in -law passed away late last week and on Friday he and Sue travel to Italy to be with his daughter whose husband is suffering with cancer. Steve will be away for a couple of months so we extend to him and Sue our condolences and thoughts for what lies ahead.

This Sunday sees the Pollock Cup semis and final for Women's inter club played at Shirley, - in and around Metro and the Wood Trowel. Our Ladies have made it into the semis and we wish them well for a successful day and the return of the trophy to our clubhouse.

Note that on the 15 May the Club is running an Open Women's Tournament so if you are available to play get your entry in as soon as possible this is all good support for the Club. I thought the promotion of the event with clothing supplied by the pro shop caught the eye. On that note there are some really good bargains for shirts and tops in the pro shop so get in quick!!

For those in the Page Trophy continual date clashes have led us to extend the play-off time for a further week through until 10 May. There are now no excuses for the matches not being completed.

It's All About Me............

Many thanks to all those readers who have expressed both concern and sympathy in respect of my 'love life' but as yet this has not firmed to any concrete proposals - still I live in expectation (and hope)!

The astute observer will have noted that at this moment I should be on the road that leads to Westport but late last week the worker packed a sad and left his employment indicating he now did not want to proceed with mediation. I have put the Monkees Greatest Hits back in the CD rack and rearranged my week for a 'quieter' time in the office.

My golf at the weekend was a mixed bag some not so good and most pretty awful!! For the avoidance of doubt I record, yes, I was lucky to get past the ladies tee on 16 for 3 and all debts have now been paid. No I do not need to reiterate the story again but I will say it was very nearly a "gin" shot for my first.

Sunday saw me engage in a titanic Top Dog battle against the two time former champions Grant Mitchell and John Parkes. It was a very tight match with never more than 1 in it. I managed to extend the game into the 19th hole by 3 putting 18 from less than 10 feet to allow them back to square. Fortunately my partner, Dean Palmer, sunk a good putt on the first extra hole to move us into the next round against that dynamic duo of Brian Ronan and Bryan Andrews (Amanda will need to buy in extra stocks of red wine!!).

Metro Away (well away)............

The Metro Team and the New Zealand Netballers have a lot in common namely the inability to win when travelling any distance away from home. As the Indian summer continues almost into May the win less drought has been prolonged for yet another couple of weeks. Without wishing to dwell too deeply on the matter over the past 4 ½ years our away record reads: - 0 wins, 4 halves & 15 losses. With only three rounds to go this year we have one more opportunity to turn it around when we play Russley at Russley!

This week saw us journey to that hidden gem (long may it stay lost) Windsor described by one of our number as “a trick course only fit for a magicians tournament”. I arrived carefully timed to watch the team struggle up the 18th with heads bowed almost to their knees – clearly it made not been a good day!! In the bottom pairing Steve Ellis returning to the team in the rotation cycle after an enforced recuperation period showed good touch to win his match 1 up. Steve carted an 83 and showed that beauty is in the eye of the beholder saying he thought the course was in “great nick and the greens were rolling really well”. Unfortunately Cran was not quite so lucky and succumbed somewhat earlier.

In the 5 & 6 grouping Brian Tyro making his ’09 Metro debut quickly found himself 4 down after 5 but then 1 up after 10 and quite hopeful. Then in his own words he needed to go and purchase some Vaseline as he tumbled to a 4/2 loss. Rex Price had the deck stacked against him as his opponent shot 75 off the stick coming home in 35 to really give him no chance – another 4/2 loss. Captain of the day Ben Frampton was up one place at three but alack to no avail suffering a 5/4 loss and incurring the maximum fine his comment as he exited 18 green was “I thoroughly enjoyed the nature walk between 9 green and 10 tee and I am looking forward with expectation to the fish as promised for lunch!!”. Spare a thought for Ben; his secretary, Jenny, is the Club Captain at Windsor and he wasn’t looking forward to the Monday morning conversation. JD provided slightly stiffer opposition but was defeated 3/1. His comment of," There’s a lot of local knowledge out there look what they scored!” probably only told half the story.

This year we have played well at the top of the order but it was going to take more than that to salvage some pride at least. Glenn Bongartz had stepped up to fill the void at 1 given the large number of unavailabilities and proved his worth with a 6/5 victory. Glenn delivered an inspirational speech to the team at the after match but it may have been better timed if it had been before tee off. Glenn shaking his head in disbelief is now talking of retiring from Metro undefeated. Steve Savill always fashions a good record through the season and values his wicket highly but on Sunday he fell at the last hurdle to lose 1 down, a bogey against a par at the difficult finishing hole.

All in all not one of our most inspiring performances with a 6/2 loss. There are three more rounds with two homes games, beginning with Rawhiti on Sunday, then Coringa and finishing at Russley on 24 May. I anticipate being in a position to report an improved result in due course. In the interim good golfing!!!

What's Happening Week of 20 April.........

We are currently in a relatively busy period of the golfing calendar with a number of upcoming events. The rescheduled Wood Trowel takes place next weekend on the 2 & 3 May with the qualifying round on Saturday followed by the dinner and the "finals" round on the Sunday. As well a number of separate competitions are approaching their use by date so please check the board to ensure all matches are played. Remember extensions will not be granted except in absolutely exceptional circumstances.

This Saturday (ANZAC Day) sees the playing of the Australian Cup which is a Stroke competition in three grades so every shot will count. This will be a good test of your ability to move the field at an acceptable speed. Please note there will be morning and afternoon starters, a start sheet and a course marshall - slow players beware.

On Sunday the Metro team makes a visit to Windsor as we try to get our season back on track. Windsor is a challenging course but I am sure the team is up to the task! At home we have a mixed match for the Wellington Salver which is a four-ball best ball stableford - a multi tee start at 12.30. If you have not already entered do so as soon as possible; as usual a dinner will follow.

In the interim good golfing!!!

Odd Spots.....

If ever you wish to create controversy all you need do is mention slow play and the dress code. As far as I can ascertain no one ever thinks they are a slow player and we are all always dressed immaculately but every one has an opinion on who is and who isn't.

Well people a five hour round of golf is simply unacceptable (and so is a 4 hour thirty) as we move into Winter and the light fades I ask each member to take responsibility for their own actions as we seek to improve the speed of play. As the temperatures continue to fall I am hopeful that there will be a corresponding rise in the standard of attire!

Congratulations to Liam Cumberpatch who turned 18 on Saturday. Liam is one of our promising Junior Golfers and is in his first year of University at Canterbury studying engineering. We wish him every success academically and sporting wise for the rest of the year.

We also welcome Doug McSweeney to the club as a new member. Doug is the CEO of Canterbury Golf and an acquaintance of Glenn Bongartz - neither of these things should be held against him!! I will be playing with Doug, David Page and Struan on the 9 May so he will be formally introduced to members at that time.

Marty Holman departs our shores on Friday to return to his native Canada for another Summer. We wish him a safe trip and look forward to his return later in the year. We have the pleasure of Patrice's company for a wee while longer as she does not head off until the end of May.

On Saturday I was a "little" worse for wear and arrived at the Club slightly peckish while under some pressure to move straight to the tee. I grabbed a Breakfast Muffin from the heated food cabinet which consisted of bacon & egg and other good stuff. It certainly filled the spot and I would recommend this as a pre-game snack. Amanda says they sell well and are available not only on Saturdays but also on Wednesday.

Blank Cup Manager Required........

The Men's Committee is looking to appoint the Manager for the 2009 Blank Cup Inter Club Team. The competition runs during the months of August and September and you will be part of the Inter Club Selection and Management Team. Brian Ronan is again supervising the Woodward Cup Team and Steve Hicks and Rod Hayes are seeking to go one step further with the Simon Team in 2009 after losing last years final.

If you are interested or know someone who might be interested please let me know and I can arrange for you or them to have all the information. We want to have this all tied down by the end of May so time is now almost of the essence.

It's All About Me.....

One of the Club members recently asked if the Blog would be able to be spiced up with reports and updates on my sex life - as I hastened to point out you can't report on nothing.

However I did have Marty, Patrice and Anita to dinner on Friday and included on the menu were spiced beans (this is as hot as it gets for me). A request has followed for the recipe and since I stole this one as well it is now disclosed.

Blanch green beans in boiling water, then rinse in cold water (to stop them cooking further), heat a pan, add a little oil (olive is best), crushed garlic (about 3 cloves - more if vampires worry you) a sprinkling of mustard seeds (I use caraway seeds - I like them better), salt and a little chilli (well as much as you like really I use chilli flakes) then stir fry the beans in the pan and serve - all my food is easy!!

Over the next four weeks I will be "acting up". Our mediation practice leader is overseas on leave and they wanted someone to fill the gap. Given this is the only person who appears to do less than me in the office I thought I was ideally suited and applied. Apparently I was the only application and appointed but unfortunately they still want me to do my normal tasks as well - bugger (luckily this is not too difficult)!!

In addition I have to make a flying visit (by car) to Westport on 27 & 28 April so the blog and associated reports maybe severely truncated!! (Only joking!!)

The Week That Was.........

Judging by the number of e-mails that bounced back last Tuesday it is clear a number of members took a longer break over the Easter holiday. I trust that you have returned to work (and golf) refreshed and rejuvenated as we move further into the autumn months.

Saturday saw the slightly older members of the Club compete for the J O Jameson Veterans Cup on Par Handicap for those over 60 years of age. Traditionally this has always been a closely contested event and this year proved to be no exception with the first three places, all on plus 4, decided on countback. The eventual winner was the evergreen John Brown from Don Forbes and Philip Hong with Ahmad Hosseini in fourth place.

The form of the deceptively youthful Don Forbes has now come under close scrutiny with the Wood Trowel approaching - already he has won the Junior Club Championship and his name seems to be appearing regularly in the prize list. It could well be that Brian Ronan will need to look to his laurels to maintain his early favourite status.

For the younger members of the Club i.e those under 60 years of age the competition was Stableford Three Grades. With conditions nearly perfect a number of good scores were posted. Peter Sim with 39 points led the Seniors from Mitchell Vincent (returning from injury) 38 on c/b from Peter McDougall. David Wallace in a return to form hit 40 points to win the Intermediates from Raymond Liong on countback with Ross Campbrell only 1 point further back. In the Juniors there were a bunch of good scores with Grant Adamson winning again on c/b from Richard McBride with Paul Needs heading off Graham Purkis again on c/b for third.

Twos were literally two a penny with 19 winners each receiving $13.15. The jackpot was struck by Raymond Liong (watch the form of this man over the next fortnight) with a value of $90. Nett eagles with a pool of $120.00 was struck by Andrew Topp (one of our junior golfers) on the first. Nearest the pins were Keith Love on 3 & Lindsay Buxton on 11 - $45 each. The Benjarong Thai Cuisine sponsored prize on 18 for 2 was won by Wayne Tucker. Nearest the pin for two on two sponsored by Linden Leaves was Jim Paulsen.

In addition to the two competitions there were also a number of Top Dog Matches played. In a keenly contested tussle Charles Whitwham and Ray Barakauskas triumphed over the Sanders brothers JB and Kim 2/1. Apologies for holding them up in the group behind my four but I lost ball's on 13 (hit the gum tree, subsequently found after I had returned to the tee) and 14 (it never came down from in the tree) - it ruined what at one stage had the potential almost to be a good round! I understand David Robinson and his partner had a win in extra holes as did Ian Currie and his partner. Just a friendly reminder this weekend is the last day for the first round so get those matches played and the results up!!

Matthew Robinson.........

It was with great sadness that we noted that one of our Life Members recently passed away. Matthew Robinson was a committed Christchurch Golf Club member throughout his life, in his early boyhood years as a caddy and later as Club Captain, then Vice President and finally President. I think it fair to say he covered and participated fully in all aspects of the Christchurch Golf Club both in playing and administration.

It was perhaps a true reflection of his life and the esteem in which he was held that so many members attended his funeral service. To Lee and the rest of the wider Robinson family we extend our condolences on your loss.

The Lefties........

Attached is the e-mail received from Paddy Helmore in respect of the National Left handers Championship held in Rotorua last week.

Hi Simon
The final round of the 24th National Left Handed Golf Tournament was played last Thursday.
The results show that Paddy managed to creep up (or rather the other contenders managed to slide back) the order and finished as runner-up in the Senior (over 55) Championship. A pleasing situation as there were about 80 players in the senior section compared to 60 in the open section.
Rex and Ahmed did not quite have such a happy time on the course but I am not sure if the magnificent dinner the ChCh lefties and wives had the night before the final round had anything to do with it, although Rex wasn't quite sure about the oysters.
Overall a good time was had by all and it is a shame that more of our ChCh Golf Club lefties do not belong to the NALG NZ ($20 per year) and join in the many lefties tournaments played around the country.
Regards
PH

What's Happening Week of 13 April.........

Firstly my apologies if I did not appear to answer your telephone message last week, on Thursday Telestra Clear discovered there was an error in our messaging system which meant we were not being advised of incoming messages for the week. By the time I got too my mailbox there were 11 unanswered calls. I think I have now caught up but if you are still waiting please call again - I will ring back promise.

Our 'away' team (approximately 8 couples) heads over to the Heritage this week and we wish them all the best for their trip. I am sure they will have a great time given the efforts of Barry & Robyn Fletcher in setting up the itinerary and we await their report upon return - good golfing people.

For us, the stay-at-homes, the rescheduled J O Jameson Veterans Cup takes place together with the first qualifying round of the shootout. If you have not caught up with it yet note the Wood Trowel weekend has now moved to 2 & 3 May - watch this space!!

If you are looking to move closer to the golf course the Club has entered into an arrangement with the developers of the Waikakariki Subdivision over the road whereby there is a chance to have you Club Subscription paid for a year if you purchase a section- more details are available in the Club House.

The Board met last week and is working towards a decision in May in respect of the fairway renovations. Mark is reasonably happy with the progress of the new fairways but acknowledges there is still some little way to go for the green surrounds. Some of these areas have been resown to get a better strike and hopefully the autumn growth period will improve matters. The spiking has gone well and the greens should be sanded within the next wee while ensuring a good surface during winter.

The Men's Committee meets this Wednesday and we will be discussing Twilight golf for 2009/10 possibly with a business house flavour let me know your views.Over the next few weeks we will be seeking to establish a social programme for the Club so if there is anything you would like us to do please feel free to speak with me.

One of our projects for 2009 is a revamping of the Website and it may well be that this "blog" is incorporated into the new format so again your views of what we should be doing are sought. The new system may also make on line tee booking a reality as we strive to improve the service to members. As always I will attempt to keep you informed of developments as they occur, in the interim enjoy your golf.

The Christchurch Casino Golf Masters.......

While the drama unfolded out on the fairways and greens of Augusta the Shirley Links were playing host to The Christchurch Casino Golf Masters and nothing was lost by way of comparison. From a playing point of view the tournament was superbly organised by Fore J Promotions so to Jerry, Warren, Julie and Jackie together with the rest of their team very well done particularly as the Charities - The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, Kids Can Stand Tall and the Canterbury Branch of Cystic Fibrosis - benefited greatly.

Officially the tournament is spread over the final two days of the Masters and competed for on a stroke basis. Saturday saw a separate competition for members and guests take place on a stableford formula which was well supported. The highlight was definitely the quiz which went down to the wire with the two finalists being Brian Nixey and Allan Scott. Nixey had followed Scottys lead throughout but on the final question (over which Scotty was very confident) for no particular reason Nixey took the opposite view and wouldn't you know it he won and received the Callaway Golf package amidst much hilarity from the assembled multitude.

For the record the Senior grade was won by Aidan Miller on 40 from Matthew Hicks on 39 and Mr JD on 38 by countback (walk away...........). The Juniors saw Brian Tyro triumph with 40 from Joe Mullins and B Foxcroft both on 39 - note there were only two grades.

Overall the Christchurch Golf Club members performed to an outstanding level. The putting competition was won by JB Sanders who sank a very tricky downhill (I subsequently 4 jerked it later in the day from the same position!!) putt in the finals play-off to take away a 42 inch flat screen TV. As yet we are unsure where it will go in the pro shop but we are looking forward to its installation. We were always confident of a Christchurch win because one of the other two finalists was Ant Doyle but he was unable to repeat his earlier feat of sinking the putt.

The teams event was hotly contested with 3 out of the 4 scores counting on both days. Joe Mullins carefully selected his team for Progressive First National Realty including himself, Karl Kitchingham, Ian Dobson & Brian Ronan and they were able to easily head off the rest of the competition. The rumour is that Joe may now well be asked to select the Metro Team given his level of success.

The premier prize for the event is the Green Jacket with the field being seeded for the second day on the basis of the first round scores. The conditions on Saturday were especially testing with a strong easterly blowing plummeting the temperatures and adversely effecting the scoring. Having said that the Bunny Girls on 11 still managed to relieve each player of $20 as they went through while attempting to huddle out of the wind and dispensing Easter Eggs.

The final grouping for Sunday included our own Bryan Andrews and JB with the overnight leader Steve Garland from Russley who had shot an impressive nett 67. Sunday dawned fine and clear with just a hint of a nor'wester but it never really set in. Unfortunately the golf from the leading group didn't quite reach the heights of the previous day and it looked as though the winner would come from another grouping.

Hiding back in the pack under the radar was another Christchurch member Brian Ronan who had shot a nett 73 on Saturday from a luxurious handicap of 10. Brian is a steely competitor and clearly he was focused and had his "A" game on hand as for much of the round he was at or under par. As the battle came down to the last few holes it was apparent there would have to be an outstanding round to deny Brian the win. Eventually Brian got to the House with a 76 nett 66 to go with his earlier 73 and later in the evening he donned the Green Jacket at the Casino Dinner as the overall winner. In second place was Steve Tansey from Steve Garland in third. There were also good rounds from Niven Boyle (a past winner),Barry Fletcher, Rod Hayes, Andrew Hopkins and JB Sanders.

Our congratulations to Brian who was a deserved and popular Champion. I understand the TAB are now reviewing their odds for Brian for the Wood Trowel (he looks a hot favorite!!) and we suspect on Wednesday evening there will be a substantial slope index movement (downwards!!).

While nobody was able to win a car with a hole-in-one on the third, automobiles did feature large in the weekend. On Saturday one of the sponsors had an array of European vehicles displayed on the Flagpole Lawn with pride on place going to a very smart Maserati. Joe Mullins showed great sense in hitting his ball, while out of bounds, under the car - not so David Isaac who managed to hit the car when he went out of bounds. Some would say that's as close as David will ever get to a Maserati. It was interesting to note next day the car had moved and was protected by the lesser Alpha and Citroen.

My golf was pretty ordinary (although Brian Ronan and I did take $2 off Nixey & Scotty on Saturday) but I did win a microwave in the raffle - I'm open to any offers!! This was a wonderful weekend and enjoyed by all and once again well done everyone.

Dress Code.....

It certainly is not my intention to become the fashion police but the Club does require a certain standard of dress from both members and their guests. The guidelines are clearly set out in the "green book" for the course and the clubhouse and probably I need not outline matters further apart from saying - "Members are expected to observe good taste and maintain a high standard". Enough said!!

L B Wood Trowel now 2 & 3 May 2009

After careful consideration it has been decided that the date of the L B Wood Trowel Evening and Competition will be moved by a fortnight to the weekend of the 2/3 May 2009.

I apologise for this change to the calendar and any inconvenience it may inadvertently cause but as we approached the Event it became very apparent that there were a number of Club Members involved in other activities such that the ultimate success of the Dinner and Sunday Competition were likely to be compromised. In the circumstances it was determined that moving the date was the best option. Once again I apologise for the change but it was taken with the best interests of the membership at heart. In the interim I am sure that the 2009 competition will be an outstanding success.

If you wish to discuss the matter further please feel free to speak with me.

Cheers & good golfing

Simon

What's Happening Week of 6 April............

The focus of the Club now moves to The Christchurch Casino Golf Masters which takes place over the Easter weekend. This is a major event for the Club and once again provides the opportunity to showcase Shirley Links to the wider community while providing support for the Canterbury Branch of Cystic Fibrosis, Kids Can Stand Tall Charity and Canterbury Medical Research Foundation. The course will be closed on Sunday and Monday while the tournament takes place but both the pro shop and the caterers are gearing up for a big weekend.

On Saturday the promoters run a Members day which offers everyone the opportunity to participate. There are shot gun starts in the morning and afternoon. An entry fee of $20.00 applies to the afternoon field but is optional in the morning - however if you do not enter you will not be eligible for one of the best prize tables of the year. Not only is this a worthwhile tournament to support because of the charity component but it also extremely well run so book in as soon as possible - it's open for Men and Women!! A full report will follow next week.

The Board has its normal monthly meeting on Tuesday with an agenda that looks reasonably full! Around the course Mark Lawson has arranged for our arborist John Royal to visit to trim some trees - on the 18th (roadside), the 9th tee and over hanging the 8th fairway (which I am sure will be a relief to most of us as we hug the right hand side). The greens spiking has gone well and Mark has rolled the greens meaning they are running better than expected and should heal at a faster rate - they will be sanded the week after Easter.

With the Easter break the next version of Simon Says will not appear until Tuesday 14 April(sometime) all things being equal and dependant on workload. In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before.........

Alpine Classic............

The Alpine Classic was held at Hanmer over the weekend. The following report is filed by our roving reporter Ben Frampton who appears to have stayed awake for the whole weekend's festivities a first perhaps??

The weekend event was attended by a total touring party of approximately 50. Excluding the caddies and other advisers there was a strong playing field of 40, comprising 28 men and 12 women.

Friday evening included a barbecue superbly cooked by Michael Gibbon with assistance from Kerry Sullivan and others, drinks, more drinks for some participants and a putting competition in the clubhouse, the prize of a bottle of Pinot Noir won by Brian Ronan showing early form with the blade.

On Saturday we were blessed with a brilliant day, fine and completely calm. Alan Scott and Brian Nixey, who had both been back in Christchurch on Friday night, drove up early and the benefits of their partial abstinence on Friday night appeared to be reflected in them both carding 39 stableford points and being joint first day leaders in the men's section. On countback Alan Scott was awarded the privilege of wearing the leader's silver jacket for the evening dinner.

Janet Osborn was the overnight leader in the women's section with 34 stableford. It was not clear whether her chances for the following day were assisted by the advice available from Grant , but we won't go into any further detail on that subject.

A strong norwester blew during the night but fortunately died down on Sunday morning to give us another good day.

Early indications were that Paul Needs was having some trouble negotiating the subtleties of the Hanmer layout and may not have been any more help in his other alternative option of playing in the President's Grade final at Clearwater . Paul had played his Saturday round in the same group as young Benji Andrews and commented how pleased he was to have the chance to play with someone shorter than himself. Considering the Andrews height gene pool, it is doubtful if Paul could make this claim for too much longer.

There was some movement in the scoring on Sunday with Ben Frampton emerging first on stableford at the end by one point over Brian Ronan and with Graham Watson steady in third place. Linda Sumner came home on Sunday to finish first in the Women's section with a plucky Janet Osborn holding on for second and Sandra Standage finishing third

Brian Nixey incurred a yellow card warning for attempting to enter in the Women's long driving competition . His excuse " I had to get my name on something" was unanimously rejected by the disciplinary committee

Perhaps the most impressive performance of the weekend was Russell Standage on Saturday night. Having won a Prenzel gin in the raffle, he competed strongly to come through and win the gin bottle putting competition in the clubhouse, fighting off the challenges of Peter Phelan and Brenda Parlane in the final round. However it was the standout manner of his performance that won over the spellbound audience. Each putt took something like 10 minutes as Russell preceded his putting by regaling the audience with some superbly told tales, including demonstrations and sound effects. A brilliant effort all round.

We all appreciated the assistance of Gibby and Liz making things work so well and the hospitality and fine condition of the Hanmer Springs Golf Course. A great weekend enjoyed by all......

Junior Golf......

The Junior competition moved to Christchurch for the Sunday round. In the absence of Mark Harris we extend our thanks to Grant Topp and Phillippa Tulisi who stepped in to manage the teams.

Our Senior team drew Russley who arrived with an extremely strong combination with a 3 & three 4 handicappers. At one Liam Cumberpatch was again successful 3/2 continuing his good form. Unfortunately his team mates could not quite match his efforts, from a significantly higher handicap Simon Watson fought hard all the way and was perhaps unlucky to lose 1 down while both Andrew Topp and Ciaran Selwyn played well but in the circumstances could not overcome the handicap differences.

Our Junior team fared significantly better not withstanding in the handicap section they were giving away a number of shots to the Kaiapoi team. James Harris had to give his opponent 19 shots but eventually emerged a winner after a closely contested match. Rosie Tulisi showed her opposition no mercy being a 6/5 winner after playing very consistent golf. Alex Sloane (without caddy & support person Andrew) played very staunch golf coming from behind several times to finally register a half. At number 1 Henry Pearson shot an 80 (2 under his handicap) but having to give 12 shots led to a 3/2 loss notwithstanding his good play.

I have to say I am impressed by the fearlessness that the Juniors approach their golf - they simply stand up and smack it - I wish I could do the same.

Odd Spots..........

How good a golfer is Chris Abbott?? Chris a newer member on a 27 handicap recently had a week to remember - on Saturday he was the sole winner of the nett eagles when 10 was drawn, the following day he won the Junior Plate from Michael Sweeney, and then his run of good form continued with a hole in one at 11 on Wednesday evening when playing with Mike Hadley. Congratulations and well done Chris, keep it up and watch that handicap plummet.

It was interesting to note that Michael Sidey was seen leaving the Forsyth Barr Golf day the other week carrying two bottles of wine. When questioned Mike admitted he was a winner and while not "good form" to win at your own tournament he disclosed he had actually won four prizes having already given away two sleeves of balls to his playing partners - and they already had wine as well!! I sure it Mike's win was well deserved and given it was Forsyth Barr I'm sure the wine tasted good!

The Week That Was...........

For those that did not venture beyond the city bounds Saturday saw a Stableford Three Grade Competition. On what was a splendid afternoon there was a surprisingly full field.

The results subject to final confirmation from Struan were in the following form: Seniors Rod Hayes on 39 points from Bruce Taylor on 38, Intermediates - Bentley Seeto on 39 from moi on 37 from Philip Hong by countback with David Page on 36. Putting last Sunday behind David Isaac had 40 (good enough for him & Marcus to take $16 from Keith Love and me) from Jeff Suddens on 34.

Ian Mac Donald was extremely lucky in that he scored the only 2 worth $130, the jackpot was not struck and $45 carries forward (I understand Rod Hayes had 2 two's but had not put his money in!). Nearest the pins were Ian MacDonald on 3 and Phil Loughlan at 11 - $45 each. Nearest the pin for 2 on 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was Philip Burdon while Charles Whitwham won the Benjorong Thai Cuisine prize for closest to the pin for 2 on 18 (Charles was involved in a Top Dog Match and shot an even par 72). Net Eagles with a pool of 65 was not struck with the 7th being drawn.

As indicated these figures are provisional only and are subject to final confirmation and sign off. For the avoidance of doubt those that win Saturday competitions are eligible for Casino Food & Beveridge Vouchers to be collected from the Office if you are not present for the announcements on Saturday. The "cash" prizes are credited to your Proshop account.

Sunday saw President's play their final round at Clearwater against Everglades. In the absence of both Dennis Doherty and stand-in Paul Needs the team was lead by David Young. After a titanic struggle where 7 games went down the 18th Christchurch unfortunately finished on the wrong side of the ledger 41/2 to 31/2. David Isaac won the prize for most valuable player a bottle of gin which he promises to share (Yeah Right!!). This was perhaps not one of the sides more successful years but they will do better next season and as the saying goes "a good time was had by all".

The season continues for our Women's Pollock Cup team as they are now through to the semi final round. When I have more information I will let you know the details of how we can support the Ladies and see if we can get the Cup back to Shirley!
