Hot August Night.........

The response to the Wine Tasting evening has been simply outstanding and has exceeded our best expectations such that we now have a small reserve list!!

In order to accommodate as many people as possible Amanda is currently working on table seating plans and to finalise numbers we would be grateful if payment for the tickets could be made no later than Friday 7 August 2009.

Clearly this will be one of the highlights of the golfing year but if for any reason you put your name down but can not now attend please let either me or Amanda know as soon as possible so we arrange for replacements to be slotted in. I look forward to seeing you all on the 15 August if not before.

What's Happening Week of 27 July......

Sunday saw the last place in the Top Dog semi finals decided with the Bond/Maguire pairing being successful over Andrew Sloane & Dean Corry. These next matches are due to be played by the 6 September but given the demands on the course that does not provide too much extra time. (Apparently I had been given incorrect information and the victors were in fact Andrew Sloane & Dean Corry over Mark Bond & Dennis Maguire by a margin of 2/1 - Dennis pleads confusion particularly as he has only just returned from Ireland - Apologies to Andrew & Dean).

This Saturday sees Round 10 of the Shootout being played with the current qualifying mark being set at 74. Given the condition of the course and the spell of good Winter weather it is likely that this mark will increase over the coming few rounds. With the planned fairway renovations the date of the final has been changed to please see the revised programme to ensure you keep the weekend free if you think you are going to qualify!!

Match of the day is a Multiplied Team Stableford so that will ensure full participation from all team members. Remember 0 x whatever still equals 0 and it never ceases to amaze me the fines that are imposed on those unfortunate enough to score the first or any zero. I will be out and about early as the course Marshall and taking an interested view of how the competition is proceeding.

Following last week away I am based in town until Friday largely because of what are known as P40's which translated means the annual Performance Review - I had been booked in to go to Westport but that was changed (Bugger!!). We have both a practical, earlier in the week, and a one-on-one with our team leader in my case on Friday afternoon - I will probably need both drinks soon thereafter and the weekend to recover. From next Monday 3 August I travel to the West Coast for the week so the Blog report maybe slightly later in publication but I will try to send it out prior to departure.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

Inter Club Golf................

We are fast approaching the interclub season and the preparation of our teams for the Woodward, Blank & Simon Cups is now well advanced.

Simon leads off the season with their first match, a single round, on Sunday 2 August at Rawhiti against McLean's Island off tees 4/5 at the unseasonably early hour of 8.00am. I am sure any support would be greatly appreciated by the team.

The following week Woodward is at Shirley (1 round at 11.00) with the Blank at Russley (1 Round at 11.00). More information will follow next week. Again if you are available to caddy for our Woodward Team please speak to either Brian Ronan or me as soon as possible.

The Week That Was.............

The Saturday competition was a Greensome Two Stroke for the W P Anderson Cup with the top eight pairs qualifying for the Campbell Cup on matchplay. Let me say two things firstly Saturday's weather was simply 'stellar' and this was reflected in the scoring, secondly the ultimate result is subject to an inquiry and completion of a final countback.

Leading the field with nett scores of 66 were Tony Park & Andrew Vincent with Ken Fergus & Alan Masters. One stroke back were Peter Davey & Drew Butcher (who 4 putted 17) from 3 teams on 69 D Kerr/I Currie, B Ronan/B Seeto, V McMillan/ R Reed with a further5 teams tied on 70. Confirmation of the result will follow together with notification of the final team to qualify for the play-offs.

It was a good day for two's with a pool of $300 and each of the 15 recipients receiving $20. The Jackpot figure climbed to $125 and was not struck and nett eagles was not available on the competition of the day. Special mention to Wayne Tucker who made his two at the 6th. Paul Dunn was nearest to the pin on 2x2 sponsored by Linden Leaves and Andrew Vincent received the Benjarong Thai Cuisine voucher for nearest to the pin for two on 18. Grant Osborn hit the ball closest at 3 for $35 and Alan Masters did the same on 11 for $35.

Congratulations to Mitchell Vincent and Liam Cumberpatch who were selected for the Canterbury Junior Golf Representative team who were playing in a Quadrangular Tournament over the weekend with some good early results. We also welcomed back Chris Johns (a former Club & New Zealand Amateur Champion) to the Club who is in Christchurch for the next few weeks prior to returning to Auckland in a role for Callaway. I understand from the aftermatch conversation the Johns/Kitchingham pairing dealt to Glenn Bongartz and Rod Hayes in the haggle.

From Our European Correspondent.....

This morning by e-mail I received an update from Steve Ellis and his proposed plans for the near future. Steve has determined he needs to return to NZ (and by implication Shirley) for some respite prior to returning to Italy for what now seems to be the inevitable outcome.

To that end Steve will be in Christchurch in the week of the 10th August and looking to play on both the Wednesday and Saturday as well attending the Wine Tasting on the 15th. As you will be aware Sue returned a little earlier and for those of you worried about Steve's ability to survive I attach the comments concerning his latest meal!

"Dinner this Evening? Well, the Italians really do know how to make a Sausage. I bought a couple of beauties at the Friday Market. They were slow baked,( 90 mins ), with rosemary, a potato, zucchini basted with mustard and a tomato. I thought it tasted pretty good. Well I had too, didn't I!"

Mt Nessing Uncovered...............

Ever since learning of the small country course of Mt Nessing in the McKenzie Country at the Norton Francis Cup I have had a hankering to seek it out and have a hit. Having finished my morning mediation in Timaru expeditiously it seemed that there would be no better opportunity than Wednesday afternoon.

Located inland from Albury, on the way to Fairlie, I turned left from the main highway as indicated by the Golf Club sign and followed a road that subsequently became shingle then past as sign labelled "No Exit" (reminiscent of the VoP) and just when I was about to give up I saw several flags fluttering (read bent double) in the Nor'west. Immediately the clubhouse sprung into view surrounded by what seemed to be an inordinate number of vehicles. I subsequently discovered I had arrived on the day of the PGG Wrightson Annual Ambrose Tournament.

Undeterred I unpacked my clubs and headed to the first tee after paying the $10 green fee. As I waited the group playing through invited me to join them as they only had 3 holes to play. From their surprised expressions it was apparent they do not get too many green fee players at the course. Having effected introductions and explaining the nature of my visit they invited me to tee off wherein I immediately sliced the ball out of bounds and across the road - so much for the Christchurch Golf Club Club Captain with the city clothing and the shiney Callaway Clubs!!!

Mt Nessing is literally hewn from the sheep paddocks, boasts a membership of 35 with 26 full playing men, operates from mid February to mid September (when the sheep are put back in) and relies entirely on voluntary labour. The first four holes are all relatively straight forward although potentially the shearing shed on the second, a par 5, is in play. Holes 5,6, & 7 all make clever use of the river terraces and dog legs providing an interesting challenge. The 8th a par 4, is stroke hole 1, named Snake Gully with Gum Trees down the left and sloping river terraces and out of bounds on the right providing a tight driving hole - ok so I hit the trees with my drive and 2nd.

While only 9 holes the course provides 18 tee blocks so you get a different perspective on the second time around. The greens are "sporting" to say the least and contain a wee bit (a lot) of moss and putting is dependant on if you are up or down hill and with or against the wind allowing for considerable variation. It is also a course where the presence of out of bounds means you can not afford to be playing with a slice. However it is probably its spectacular location at the foot of the mountains that is it's best feature. The locals apologised profusely that I was unable to see Mt Cook its peak being covered in cloud.

I played the last six holes by myself, lost 2 golf balls decided that was me and adjourned to the Clubhouse. Inside I was warmly welcomed and with considerable relief that the "Man in the Department of Labour car" had simply come to play golf and not carry out any inspections. The small clubhouse was packed with 40 players having partaken in the Tournament, beer was being served in big bottles from crates and the women/wives were in the kitchen cooking up a storm. Having shared a beer and some conversation and purchased raffle tickets (I didn't win) I returned to Timaru satisfied that another golfing ambition having been crossed off.

Of Coffee & Cafes...........

My trip to Timaru saw me once again seeking out the best purveyors of of the coffee bean but for the morning regular brew I continued to frequent the Purple Lizard. In the lunch time I became more adventurous and headed up to the Red Rocket in Elizabeth Street one block back from the main street by the Presbyterian Church.

The Red Rocket was once described to me as the best coffee house in the South Island and while I would not necessarily place it above Morrison Street in Nelson it certainly does provide a high quality product. Its main claim to fame is as the provider of specialty pizzas in the Timaru area and it is a place I try to visit at least once during each trip when time permits.

On a Lunch Special I had a Bacon & Onion Mini Pizza ($5), a small side of chips ($2) and a long black ($3.50). I thought $10.50 for lunch was pretty damn good as was the food! The following day being pressed for time I ventured only as far as Ballantynes largely based on the fact the were advertising Underground Coffee. Again the coffee was of high quality and complimented by a Salmon and Brie quiche which once again provided good value.

Certainly for its size I am of the view Timaru is well provided for in the Cafe stakes but given I generally cook in the evenings I am unsure if this carries over into the restaurant trade.

Thought For the Week.....

Golf is a game where the ball lies better than the person who hit it!!

What's Happening Week of 20 July.......

This week sees me travel to Timaru on a switched trip with 6 mediations scheduled over 4 days getting back to town hopefully just after lunch on Friday and in time for a drink in the evening! As always when travelling away I will be on the search for good coffee and the possibility of a previously unplayed golf course updates may be posted next week.

On the golfing front Saturday sees the Greensome Two Stroke competition for the W P Anderson Cup and the best 8 teams qualify for the Campbell Cup on matchplay. The two stroke format gives you slightly more control than straight foursomes but you are still dependant on your partner so be prepared for another fraught round. Again this is a quick game so time should not be a constraint and it is ideally suited to the Winter period.

Tickets for the Hot August Night are selling well so see Amanda & Andrew and book in for the 15 August it will be a wine tasting par excellence lead by Graham Watson and Bruce Todd with Vino Fino. On the next day, Sunday 16, is the Mixed Flag Match so put that in your diary as well.

In the interim have a good week and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

The All Stars Team......

Many thanks to the All Stars Team who played a warm up match against our Woodward Cup Team on Saturday. Karl Kitchingham, Carl Brooking, Matt Holten, Ant, Ken Fergus, Nic Fry, Paul Dunn, and Simon Yorke proved stiff opposition and were ultimately successful in a competition that will gave our team much needed match practice. The Woodward Cup starts the second week on August and if you want to support our team please give consideration to helping out as a caddy by speaking to Brian Ronan or myself.

The Week That Was...................

Saturday saw the trial of the one time shotgun start and on what was an outstanding winter's day we had a field in excess of 140. The number was slightly larger than we expected and accordingly the time taken for the round was longer than anticipated however everyone got to play 18 holes which in the winter is all good.

The Men's Committee will review the trial at our August meeting so if you have any views please feel free to speak either with me or any other committee member. We know that the down side is that 11.00 does not ideally suit all members particularly where kids sport is involved but at that time we avoid the frost in the morning and darkness in the late afternoon.

I am not sure whether it was the timing or the day but the scoring was absolutely sensational in the Match of the Day which was Stableford in three grades. The Senior Grade was won by a newer, younger member Richard Reed who scored 42 points with a 68 off the stick to be in front of Phil Loughnan on 39 in second from Kim Sanders on countback. The good scoring continued in the Intermediates where 41 points to John Dickson put him in front of Brian Adams on 40 but behind the eventual winner Brian Tyro on 42.Proving that the Juniors can also score well Clifford Chan put together 40 points to be ahead of Dean Sweetman on 38 on countback from Dermot Martin.

The two's pool was $220 and there were 8 winners each receiving $27.50, the Jackpot of $75 was not struck and carries forward. Mitchell Vincent was closest to the pin on 3 for $40 while Takahiro Koyama did the same on 11. Nic Fry was closest to the pin on 2 for 2 and collected the Linden Leaves sponsored prize while Ian Walker was nearest the pin on 18 for two winning the Benjarong Thai Cuisine voucher. I seem to remember nett eagles of $150 was won but I can't remember where or who but 10 seems to ring a bell as does JD but don't quote me!

Top Dog matches continue to be played and moving through to the semi finals are Niven Boyle and Ian Currie who were successful over Brian Adams & Lindsay Buxton last week while the two Davids, Robinson & Blair, ended the run of Paul Needs and Ross Campbell. I understand the match finished at 15 when the four adjourned to the bar, rather than play the last 3 holes, to enable Paul to make recompense for prior indiscretions on the course. The final match between the Bond Maguire team against Andrew Sloane and Dean Corry is scheduled for this weekend - result to be reported in due course.

The Page Trophy continues as well with Kate Shier and myself bowing out to Ian & Laura MacDonald 1 down losing 18. The Smiths, Murray & Lorraine, triumphed over the Kennedy's in a match where no holes were halved. The well performed combination of Joe & Sue Mullins had a good win over Tony Park and Jae Hae Lee while Glenn Bongartz`and Alison McMillan hung on to beat Chris Brocket and Maree Phillips again on 18.

Brian Ronan scored a win over Liam Cumberpatch to move through to play Alan Scott in the final of the GodbyTrophy proving age and experience can match youth and enthusiasm. I suspect with the scoring at the weekend the qualifying score for the Shootout will have increased while the Ringers totals will have dropped. Check out what's happening on running scores in the Men's Locker Room.

Ladies Who Golf Luncheon.........

After a break of nearly 6 months the Food Fairy made a brief reappearance on Friday. There was an early round of golf where Julie O'Neill starred with 39 stableford points to retain the PS Plate. An inquiry may be conducted into her changing clubs part way through the round (they were in Barry's car at the Dentist and she was using her old ones until they were returned at the 5 tee) especially as I finished second. After a Chardonnay in the Club House we adjourned for lunch with the menu as follows:

Soup: Kumara, Pumpkin & Peanut Soup. An Alison Holst recipe made with peanut butter, chilli and curry powder served with a swirl of yogurt and a few crushed cashews.
EntrĂ©e: Thai Coconut Chicken Bites. A Jo Seagar recipe made with chicken mince and coconut cream cooked in mini muffin trays – served with a small salad and chilli sauce on the side.
Main: Moroccan Boned Leg of Lamb marinated with Spices: Came from a Next magazine served with roasted veggies on wilted salad greens.
Dessert: Frangelio Affogato – which is a complicated way of saying ice cream with coffee diluted with Frangelio & some extra fudge added on the side.

With the magic of communication technology and Skype we were able to talk directly with and see Patrice and Marty in Canada and by taking the laptop for a walk we had a tour of their house. I know it is a sad indictment on my life but I am quite envious of their kitchen!!

Care of the Course........

It is not my intention to harangue members through this blog and it may well be and it is likely that the readers are not the culprits but Shirley Links is our golf course and keeping it in a great playing condition is not just the job of the greens staff. All members are responsible for repairing their pitch marks on the green, properly raking bunkers, and replacing & sanding divots.

The appearance and playing condition of the course will improve markedly if these simple steps are taken or players that digress are told to go back and fix it. On Saturday I played at Clearwater and it was apparent that the same problem exists there so it is not a problem simply applicable to us. Enough said.

Beware............

Over the past few weeks two club members have been caught speeding down the road by the fourth fairway. In one case this amounted to a $230.00 fine - so it may be better to be a little late or alternatively leave earlier to avoid the necessity of having to exceed the speed limit!!

What's Happening Week of 13 July............

This Saturday we are once again trialling the one time shotgun start with tee-off scheduled for 11.00 and the competition is Stableford three grades. Please get your names down as soon as possible because given the response last time we may look to limit numbers.

With the return of the Tri-nations Rugby Tests Amanda and Andrew will this Saturday evening be running the normal rugby test meal around the fire. So if you have no other plans please come down to the club house and watch the match with some of the other members you really will enjoy it!!

The Men's Committee meets on Wednesday and then we see Keith Love depart on his overseas excursion which will see him venturing to Canada to stay with Marty Holman and Patrice so no doubt we will have a report on golf from our North American correspondents in due course!!

As the school holidays draw to a close and after an absence of nearly six months the food fairy makes a reappearance on Friday. Menu planning is well advanced but actual testing is behind the 8 ball so anything may happen.

On the work front we seem to have hit a slight trough with the number of mediations in a temporary decline so I am taking outstanding TOIL and a leave day (well maybe two). Actually we have two away over the next couple of weeks so it is the calm before the storm! In a rearranged travel programme I head back to Timaru for the week of the 20th so who knows what may happen.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before!!

Woodward Cup Team.............

Brian Ronan has announced the Woodward Cup Team to play in the All Stars Challenge next week and for the forthcoming season the squad is: Tom Turner, John Sanders, Peter MacDougall, Aidan Millar, Nathan Gilbert, Scotty Adams, Liam Cumberpatch and Mitchell Vincent.

We are the current holders of the Cup and are expecting another successful year in 2009 so good luck to the whole team. To assist on match days Brian Ronan is keen to recruit anyone who is interested in caddying on a regular or part time basis so if this interests you please speak directly to Brian or me.

Hot August Night............

Just another reminder that our Wine Tasting Evening is set down for the 15 August, tickets are $75.00 (covers food and wine) and are on sale through Amanda and Andrew. This will be a great event so get your tickets early and avoid disappointment.

Centennial Jug.......

The mixed match on Sunday saw the participants line up for a Teams Ambrose Event with each member required to contribute at least 4 drives. Leading off at the front of the field, as is their current wont, was the Osborn/Scott combination who scorched around the track in 3 hours 10 minutes. A subsequent inquiry established that the Karyn & Janet played relatively few shots apart from their drives and were mostly focused on keeping up with Grant and Scotty. Given we hit off at 11.30, they were back before 2.45, and prize giving wasn't until 5.00 there was ample opportunity to have the fire roaring and partake in liquid refreshments prior to the arrival of the other teams.

The Mixed competition is always keenly contested and a high standard of golf is normally achieved. By way of example the highest scoring team recorded 60.2 (which is nearly 12 under par off the white tees) while the winning score was 55.33. The team of which I was a member recorded 4 birdies and 14 pars with a handicap of 10.17 to finish with 57.83 and in 5th place in the middle of the field!! So do not be thinking that this Sunday golf is just a bit of a hit and giggle it's far more serious than that.

The winners on the day with 55.33 were Chris & Helen Richmond together with Paddy & Jane Helmore from on 55.82 Joe & Sue Mullins and Graham & Jill Pankhurst from Struan & Terry Cain and Tony Park & Jae Hae Lee in third. The Osborn Scott team somehow managed 4th notwithstanding they finished on the same score as my team - further questions are being asked.

Dinner was a buffet served in and around the Dobson Gallery and beside the fire for those brave enough to venture within its well stoked orbit. Along with a host of roasted vegetables came Roast Beef, Roast Pork and Hot Ham just the fare needed to warm the heart after a long walk in the cold air. Dessert followed with individual pavlova's & steamed puddings however it did appear as though Liam forgot to put out the extra bowl of cream and trying to sneak it out at the end was slightly obvious!

The next mixed match is on Sunday 16 August G E Rhodes Cup a Foursomes Flag Match another interesting format and lots of fun as you draw to the conclusion of your round.

The Week That Was..............

Foursomes is one of the traditional games of Golf and played widely in Scotland on a regular basis. I think it appropriate that we play it as a format at least once a year to remind ourselves of the roots of the game. It also has the advantage during the Winter months of being a fast game allowing players to get out and around without dying of exposure or being trapped by the darkness - neither was a factor on Saturday which was an absolutely stellar day.

Saturdays competition was in two parts the winners of the Otago Salver with a gross score of 71 was the combination of two former club champions Tom Turner & Paul Dunn. In a close second on 73 were the young tyro's of Liam Cumberpatch & Mitchell Vincent from the more experienced combination of Simon Yorke & Glenn Bongartz on 78. In the Old Friends Trophy the winners with a nett 70 were Joe Tiller & Ron Williams (not Trig) from in countback order on 71 Brent Musgrave & Chris Richmond, Grant Borrie & Mark Rountree, and Geoff Brodie & Allan Masters.

Given the format closest to the pins were on par 4's and $20 each to Brent Musgrave & Chris Richmond on 1, Liam Cumberpatch & Mitchell Vincent on 2, Glenn Bongartz & Simon Yorke on 17 and Ken Fergus & Rod O'Brien on 18. Six pairs recorded two's and each member receives $18 from a pool of $216.

Odd Spots..............

Andrew Vincent is proving to be a very competent golfer, now on a handicap of 8, and threatening to challenge Mitchell for the title of best golfer in the household. On Wednesday Andrew holed out for two on 9 which was considerably better than trying to put his name on the Ladies closest to the pin on 3.

Paul Needs continues to be a worry such that his new nickname is "special". On Saturday night he was adamant he was caddying for Mitchell Vincent in the Town -v- Country match at Waimairi; clear instructions were given that he was to be present for tee-off at 8.00am for the first round. Andrew dropped Mitchell off on Sunday then rang Paul to ensure he was ready for action at which stage Paul indicated that his car was at the golf club and could Andrew come and pick him up. Andrew arrived to find Paul still in bed however after a short delay he was dropped off in the club car park just after 7.30am.

It was somewhat surprising that Mitchell then rang at 10.40 having won 6/5 to ask had anyone heard anything about his caddy who had not arrived. Mitchell hit off for the second round at 12.00 and was at the 4th hole before his errant caddy found him at 12.40. The real question, yet to be answered, is what was Paul Needs doing on a Sunday morning between 7.45 & 12.40 (nearly 5 unaccounted for hours!!)?? Possibly the best explanation was he was at Rawhiti wondering where everyone else was!

With Saturday's game being foursomes and Sunday's being ambrose players quite often found themselves outside their normal comfort zone none more so than President and former Club Champion Bruce Taylor who explored the hitherto unknown depths of the trees on 18. Having no previous knowledge on which to call Bruce hit 5 iron, rather well, onto the clubhouse roof much to his chagrin and to the hilarity of those watching from the safety of the Dobson Gallery. For the record the ball rebounded off the tiles in bounds but finished in a bunker and the four wisely chose another shot.

Around The Course..........

Mark Lawson presented his monthly report to the Board meeting on Wednesday and as is normal during the Winter months a reasonable amount of maintenance is and will be scheduled. However there were a number of matters of interest.

In an effort to rest parts of the putting green from excessive usage the pins usually used over the Winter months, in place of cut holes, have been removed with the subsequent improvement in the surface it is expected that they will be replaced in the next two or three weeks. The grass strike and continued growth on the new moundings (6 & 15) has been such that it is anticipated that when the GUR markings grow out (within the next month) the areas will be designated as being back in play.

As we all know it has been a wet start to the Winter and the water table on the course is reasonably high particularly on the new fairways where additional water was added over Summer to encourage growth. With the new grasses being used on the fairways this will not be such an ongoing problem and Mark is also making some changes to the irrigation system to take account of the areas to be mounded and some trouble spots on 5, behind the green on 8 and around the back of the 18th green. The wet areas on 5 & 15 green are also being closely monitored.

It is anticipated that once the course is slightly drier and able to be accessed by heavy vehicles the tree felling of the macrocarpa's on 8 and the Gum Trees on 9/10 will proceed, such action will be completed prior to the fairway renovation programme in November/December commencing.

New Age Stuff............

As you know a couple of weeks ago I was in Auckland for a training course. As part of the new age feeling we all had to stand and introduce ourselves to the group with the addition of some personal comments. Paul, who is blind, kicked the ball off by talking about his new guide dog Digby and suggested we tell each other about our pets at home.

That all went well with cats and dogs and the odd lifestyle block sheep till it came around to me when I said I lived in a small, central city, stand alone apartment about 2 1/2 minutes from work and it wasn't feasible to have an animal but I shared home with my 20 year old daughter who I suppose could be described as a cat: she arrived unannounced and took up residence, she disappears for long periods during day and night only to return for food &/or meals, takes no notice of what I say, and now the whole household revolves around her!

Thought For The Day..............

Somebody once told me that there were more important things in life than golf.......... I think it was my ex-wife!

What's Happening Week of 6 July...............

Coming up this week is, in my view, one of the most interesting and exciting competitions organised by the Club being the Otago Salver (gross) and Old Friends Trophy (nett) contested by way of foursomes played in sixes. Hitting only alternate shots you quite often play from parts of the course you may not normally frequent. A store of patience and an agreement not too say "sorry" are prerequisites for an enjoyable afternoon - its also a good format for a great haggle by way of skins!! Remember one player hits off the odds while the other hits off the evens, alternate thereafter until you hole out.

On Sunday the Centennial Jug is the trophy on the line in the mixed competition. The format is a a Teams Ambrose with a minimum of 4 drives per person. Tee times are from 11.30 onwards with an entry fee of $22.50 per participant. I understand Amanda and Andrew are planning a hearty roast to replenish the diminished reserves following completion of the appropriate exertions. Please note the Fathers/Sons and Mothers/Daughters day has been transferred to the new date of 20 September 2009 so there is still time to practice.

The inter club selection committee is meeting this week as we move to the next stage of our campaign to retain the Woodward Cup and win Blank and Simon. Brian Ronan will be looking after Woodward, while Rod O'Brien assisted by Alan Scott take over the reins for Blank with Steve Hicks and Rod Hayes again in charge of Simon. Our Woodward Team will have a new look to it this year but I am confident we have the depth to do well in this and the other competitions.

The Board meets for its July meeting on Wednesday and the agenda appears to be full with there having been a break in June. Generally the feedback in regards to the fairway renovations has been very positive and we will be looking at the next planning stage given our previous commitment to proceed.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley!

Speed of Play.... (Better??)

The afternoon ladies told me they played the full 18, from the Red tees, in 4 hours 15 mins on Saturday so hopefully we are seeing a sustained improvement in the movement of the field. Taking into account the reduced size of the participating numbers it is still too soon to say definitively the worst is over but we are clearly heading in the right direction.

In acknowledging the efforts of the members I admit that I was in a group that did lose ground on Saturday, and then again on Sunday - please be aware I have been fined by the Men's Committee for these transgressions as a salutary reminder to all players of their obligations to make best endeavours to proceed forward without undue delay!

The Start Sheet..................

Inevitably during the Winter months the start sheet is adversely affected by late withdrawals normally determined by the state of the weather on the day. A couple of issues arise as a consequence: firstly if you are pulling out please let the pro shop know as early as possible so we can look at filling the gaps.

Secondly the starter and the pro shop will attempt to "mix and match" the groupings particularly in a teams or pairs event to ensure as many as possible qualify for the competition of the day. This process is simplified if you can schedule your arrival and report to the starter at least ten minutes prior to your tee time as this may allow us flexibility in determining the make up and order in which groups hit off.

Please note with substantial pressure on the course during this period it may mean if you are late to the tee your time may be forfeited to the following group if they are ready to go or those members present may be asked to tee off and the late comer is sent to the second tee.

The Week That Was..................

Saturday was what can be termed a "raw" day with most of the players well rugged up against the biting cold and a rampant chill factor. Competition of the day was a teams Irish stableford where for the first 6 holes 1 score counts, for the next 5 holes 2 scores count, for the next 4 holes 3 scores count and for the last 3 holes all every body's score counts. Those with access to a calculator or a mathematical bent will have calculated that a score of even 2's gives a target of 80.

An early morning team carefully crafted by David Wallace to include Chris Barraclough, Peter Davey & Mike Stenhouse whizzed past that and compiled an impressive total of 94 points. This was enough to see off the "so-called " dream team of Struan Cain, Shane Gloury, Tony Park & Andrew Vincent who could only amass a mere 90 points from David Barley, Peter Hollister, Liam Cumberpatch & Peter Wardell with 89 in third from Brad Clark, Nathan Gilbert, Adian Millar & Mitchell Vincent in 4th with 88 points.

The two's pool stood at $220 and there were 16 winners each receiving $13.75, the 2x2 jackpot was new and opened at $65 to be won by Nathan Gilbert. Martin Toon was the winner of the Linden Leaves sponsored nearest on 2 for 2 while John Dickson and Brad Clark won $40 each for the nearest the pins on 3 & 11 respectively. Drew Butcher was the winner of the Benjarong Thai Cuisine prize on 18 (Drew also had 6 birdies on the back nine). For the first time in a few weeks the nett eagles pool ($75) jackpots after hole 11 was drawn.

The weather on Sunday was clement enough to tempt a number of competitors to advance their match play events. In the Top Dog competition my partner Dean Palmer and I were fortunate enough to see off the father and son combination of Michael and David Kerr 3/2 in what was a tightly contested battle. As the winners of Section A we move into the semi finals and await the outcome of the Maguire/Bond -v- Sloane/Corry game to determine the winners of Section B.

The Page Trophy also moved onwards with Alan & Karyn Scott being successful over Julie & Barry O'Neill. In a match scheduled later in the day Struan & Terry Cain were victorious over Paddy & Jane Helmore. Both days ended with a convivial crowd of members seated around the fire heating various parts of their anatomies that had been subjected to the bitter conditions outside.

It's All About Me.........

For those of you absent from the Clubhouse on Saturday let me tell you about no.4 which you will recall was playing downwind with the prevailing southerly. I hit driver off the tee along a line of the left bunker and centre fairway. The power fade gathered momentum as it was picked up by the wind, and was subsequently described by Johnny Parlane as being sneaky long, as it finished to the right and just short of the 180m mark. I pulled 5 iron from the bag and taking direction from the lamppost shaped a high shot left to right around the dog leg to pitch on the green and roll to within a metre of the pin - sunk the putt for an easy eagle 3 and 5 stableford points. Apart from a birdie on 18 it was they were the only two good shots of my round!

Ever had one of those days were you just can't win from the start?? Well Wednesday did it for me. Having heard the alarm go off at 7.00 I turned on the radio and the next thing I comprehended was the news it was ten to eight. Getting out of bed I found I didn't have an ironed shirt, rushed down stairs found my daughter had taken the last of the milk, put on the kettle, cooked toast while ironing then discovered the raspberry jam jar was empty but still in the cupboard, pondering this I realised the kettle hadn't boiled; having checked the plug, switch and stand ascertained the kettle was stuffed - heated water in microwave.

Headed out of the door having shaved showered and scoffed toast to arrive for morning fix at coffee shop, looked at watch to see how late I was and found an empty wrist, as swearing remembered I hadn't taken the chicken out of the freezer for dinner (after a disagreement with daughter over the soup for dinner the previous night this did not bode well!!). Got to work slightly stressed and strained to turn on my computer to find an empty docking station having left the bloody laptop at home. So not a great start to the morning.

After a golf club meeting got home late to find I had left the iron on all day and disgruntled daughter hadn't undertaken any food preparation!!!

Month end routinely has me reviewing budgetary expenses to clarify why again I have no money. A review of cash flow was able to establish I spent more on coffee than I did on petrol but when added together didn't equal the amount attributed to wine. To avoid a recurrence of this scenario I have now decided to show reds and whites as separate line items.

An Update From Steve Ellis.........

I have received another update from Steve Ellis and should you wish a full copy please let me know, part is attached below. Alberto's health continues to decline and and Sarah's emotional support is being maintained by Steve & Sue such that Steve will in the interim be remaining with her. I am sure it goes without saying that Steve, Sue and Sarah are often in our thoughts during this difficult time.

Sue is to depart for NZ this Tuesday the 7th, arriving back in CHCH on the 10th. I will stay the journey with Sarah. To this end we moved from our rental Apartment this morning and I will stay on in Alberto and Sarah's Apartment located some 200 metres from Olga's, where they have been domiciled. We feel this is the best practical means by which we can support Sarah as its not going to get any easier from here on in.

I can state that Sue completes her " Italian Housewife Degree " with Honours. She has only been exempt one " Unit " - that being " Queue Jumping Italian Style " through use of the Ruse - " I'm just a tired, little old Italian lady with an oversized shopping basket, so let me through! " Sue's shopping basket/bag was considered not lethal enough! She has been a marvel having to adapt to some really challenging situations over the past nine weeks. Sarah and I will miss her. And we all know how she is being so " good " about missing the Annual Italian retail shopping Sardi ( Sale ) Season, when the prices plummet. This Season starts today and runs for the month of July.

In an attempt to provide a break with the daily routine for Sarah, we have used our Sundays to get out of Bergamo and gain some R & R. A couple of Sundays ago it was a Train and Lake Ferry navigation of Lake Iseo to the east of Bergamo. Not the grandeur of Lake Como, but still very scenic, taking in the numerous and very picturesque small town stops around the Lake.

Last Sunday saw we three, together with Giuliana, our rental Apartment Owner and her daughter, Sophia, ( a member of Italy's 2009 Ski Training Squad ), travel by car 50 kms north into the Italian Alps to the small village of Ornica ( 800m asl ). We then tramped through forest and uphill some 600 metres along a small river bed out into a lush green belt to a largish stone cottage dug out from a rock outcrop. The Cottage was supported by various agricultural and O/nite accommodation units. The Italian style these as Agritourismo Ventures - an opportunity for Town to meet Country.
With some 15 other day trampers we were rewarded for our endeavour with a Fantastic authentic local Meal that comprised - Soup of wild mountain herbs/vegetables/pancetta, home made pasta, braised Cow tongue, pigs trotters stuffed with herbs & slow baked, ( known as Cotechino ), lamb ribs, polenta, then Ricotta tort and/or peach tort, hand made cheeses and all washed down with a jug of a very decent local Red! Brilliant! The kinds of tastes you chase on local restaurant menus and rarely succeed in finding. And all prepared in a minuscule kitchen set-up on a wood range. The return downhill was a breeze.

With NZ never far from the mind, and as an official CCC Anti Boy Racer Ambassador, it would be poor if I didn't report Overseas Findings on the Issue. I know Bob will be keen to learn that the Italians have cut their Boy Racer Issue in HALF. Yes, the little twats over here all ride scooters and superbikes!! Valentino Rossi has a lot to answer for!

I feel as if I am developing traces of that very Italian trait of speech with this Email, that is - " Never use 10 words when 100 will do!! " So I had better close with a word of thanks from Sarah, Sue and I for all all your messages and thoughts. Our time all together over here is drawing to a close and it would be fair to say that as a trip, it has provided not so much a Photo Album as a Scrapbook of memories. It's been a very interesting journey to say the least.

Ciao, Sue Sarah Alberto and Steve
