Club Champs 2009...........

In my view the Club Champs are the most important competition organised by the Club and as such the players deserve recognition for having made it through to Finals day. For that reason I was up so early on Sunday, to be the starter, I met myself going to bed as I was getting up and arriving home from town just as I was leaving.

Since the first round of qualifying Don Forbes has been a short priced favorite for the Juniors at the TAB paying $1.05 at fixed odds shortening to $0.90 by Sunday. His opponent David Isaac had exceeded even his own expectations in reaching the final but unfortunately on the day Don as an experienced match player proved too strong. After several beers and late in the afternoon David Isaac authorised me to say that "Although I was well beaten I lost with dignity". I think it sufficient to say that Don Forbes was on his game and played exceptionally well in the morning round to put the matter beyond all doubt. It was interesting to note that a former Club Captain David Hicks pulled Don's bag as caddy over the final even if he did have to sprint down the first to catch up.

At times the Intermediate Grade can provide the greatest competition and probably the two most consistent competitors in Dodge Healy and Warren Glass made it into the final having beaten Mike Ambrose and Martin Toon respectively in the semis. Warren had his brother Jim on the bag while Dodge's caddy was his son. For those of you who do not know Dodge is one of our most frequent golfers and it is not unusual during the summer months for him to be teeing off at 6am four or five mornings a week. I suspect it was that substantial extra practice together with a focused concentration that eventually saw Dodge emerge as the winner. It was Dodge's second major title at the Club having previously won a Shootout final again showing his competitive streak.

After a tight semi final against Peter MacDougall that went all the way to 18 for a one up win Brendon Follows played a former club champion and current President Bruce Taylor in the Final of the Seniors. From the first drive Brendon applied relentless pressure to Bruce who although playing well could not respond to the challenge. Going down 16 I asked Diana Taylor how it was going and she said "It's not that Bruce is playing badly he's only 2 over but Brendon is playing so well!!". Finishing ahead after 18 there was no let up in the afternoon and Brendon did not allow Bruce back into the match to emerge as the 2009 Club Champion a deserved honour in light of the manner of his play and victory.

Although over only 18 holes the competition in the plate sections were no less keenly fought. In the Juniors Chris Abbott was a clear winner over perennial finalist (although normally against Jimmy Will) Michael Sweeney. The Intermediates saw Peter Hollister (who last Sunday beat me!!) win over Alan Day in a match that went down to the last. In the Seniors Ian Currie broke 80 off the blue tees for the first time in seeing off Paddy Helmore.

A special thank you to David Page who gave his Sunday afternoon to be the referee although I am reasonably sure he was not called upon to rule. To all the finalists whether you were victorious or not congratulations on reaching Finals Sunday you have all played well during the competition and were the envy of your fellow Club members! I look forward to seeing you all on the tee during the rest of the season and next year.

What's Happening Week of 30 March......

This week we welcome back Cecily to the office on a return to work programme following her illness. It is great to see that Cecily is recovering so quickly and well and we wish her all the best during this period - don't work too hard. I am sure I speak for us all when I say you were sadly missed while you were away, having said that thanks to all the people that have helped out in the office over the past few weeks it has been much appreciated.

This coming weekend sees the reintroduction of the Alpine Classic at Hanmer if you want to go and have not committed as yet could you please do so as a matter of urgency by speaking with Ben Frampton. At last count there were nearly 50 signed up so clearly its going to be a great weekend and some golf might even get played!! For those not venturing out of Christchurch the competition of the day next Saturday is Stableford three grades.

This is the last week for the playing of the prelim top-dog round so please get those matches played and the results up. Just as a reminder it behoves both parties to work towards getting a mutually acceptable date so you should not have left it to the last minute. As a rule of thumb if no date can be agreed then the match should be played on the last possible date. If this is not possible the choices are a forfeit or a coin toss. Failure to do anything will result in both pairs being disqualified! Any questions see me.

The Page Family Trophy draw has now been posted in the Dobson Gallery with 40 couples participating. There is a prelim round so please check what is happening as soon as possible and the due dates with so many other activities under way. The match conditions are noted on the draw.

Next weekend sees our Women's Pollock Cup team travel away to Ellesmere for the next round, the team is going well so we wish them all the best. Our Juniors (both teams) play the next round at Shirley on Sunday morning. As usual any support around the course would be greatly appreciated by the players. It is also the final round of the Presidents Competition with all teams playing at Clearwater. This is one of the longest competitions run with 14 teams that commenced in September of last year. I understand Paul Needs is grappling with selection changes as we speak - no doubt more will follow.

In the interim good golfing!!

Odd Spots.........

It is interesting to note that one of our overseas members Sachio Semmoto has recently been appointed to the Board of Telecom New Zealand. Sachio has extensive experience in the international communications market heading one of Japan's leading suppliers. We wish him well in his new role and look forward to perhaps more regular visits to Shirley!!

For those musically attuned you would be aware that a band known as Kings of Leon were playing at the Westpac Centre on Sunday evening. Grant & Janet Osborn's daughter Hannah made the trip up from Dunedin together with all of her 8 person flat - we understand Grant did a great job on the barbecue especially after a Highlanders victory. The big question is "Was Paul Needs the oldest person at the concert and why was there so much interest in his attendance from other club members in regards to what I understand is known as a teen band?" Any replies gratefully received.

Teams On Tour....

So far 2009 has seen a number of our members away from the club on tour with events such as the NZ Open and the Veterans. Clearly that trend seems fit to continue over the next wee while.

This week we have a contingent heading up to the Left Handers National Tournament in Rotorua so good luck to Paddy Helmore, Rex Price and Ahmad Hosseini together with any other Club members who are heading north!

Andrew Sloane will again be leading a team to the Masters in Augusta and we wish him and the rest of the party (enviously) all the best for their trip. No sooner is that under way than we have Barry & Robyn Fletcher taking approximately 8 couples to the Heritage in Melbourne just after Easter. I am sure that tour will be a success especially given the amount of golf that some of the participants have scheduled to play.

Around the Course.....

I am often asked about the bunker sand and when the fairway bunkers will have the new sand added. Unfortunately this is a cost issue for the Board and while all the greenside bunkers have been done the remaining bunkers will not be completed until sufficient funding is available (approximately $20k).

This week sees the greens being spiked and lightly sanded to ensure adequate drainage over the winter months. Because no corings are being taken out it is anticipated that the greens will recover very quickly. For those of you who are observant you will have noted that the old 9th green has been used for setting up the spiking machine in anticipation.

This week Mark and his team will also be completing the final shaping, seeding and fertilising of the moundings between on 15 & 16 and 6 & 7 - those piles are not bark chips but fertiliser.

Working Bee A Great Success.......

A huge thank you to all the club members who turned out on Sunday for the working bee. There were approximately 20 members who were divided into 3 teams. The ladies undertook the task of clearing up all the pine cones that were littering the course and filled close on a dozen big bags. An enthusiastic team, including myself, were assigned duties on the 14th tee in demolishing the weeds in the tussocks and tidying up the weeds that were dead from spraying. The biggest team under the direction of Mark Lawson concentrated on the mounding between 15 & 16 removing all the "hard fill and rubbish" from the added soil so that final shaping can take place (this was a hot and tiring task but it was much appreciated).

After a hard two hours work it was pleasant to retreat to the clubhouse for a barbecue and a beer provided by the club. (I suspect my former wife would be surprised at my participation I probably did more work in that 2 hours than in 23 years of marriage!). It is likely we will consider the possibility of more bees later in the year so watch this space.

The Week That Was...........

Effectively the week built up to the crescendo that was to be the Club Championship finals (see separate report). For those of us not involved in the "play-offs" or preliminary top-dog rounds the match of the day was Pairs Aggregate Stableford.

The clear winners with 73 points, and matching outfits (bright green shirts and camel trousers) and hair styles (short & grey) were Brian Nixey & Alan Scott from in order Richard Blunt & Pater Davey, Frank Garthwaite & Grant Osborn, and Andrew Fergus & Richard Pearce all on 67 by countback.

Two's (subject to confirmation) were worth $18.00 each to the 10 winners. Marty Holman did it twice to win the jackpot of $74. Nearest the pin for 2 on 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was David Lamb while Scotty Adams (a newer member) won the Benjarong Thai Cuisine prize on 18. Nearest the pin on 3 was Geoff Brodie & 11 Karl Kitchingham $45 each. Net eagles with a pool of $60 was struck by Chris Abbott on 10.

It was great to see a full compliment of the Saturday afternoon ladies out on the course with two groups of four and showing great perseverance in what was nearly a five hour round! It was perhaps as well that the weather was kind and Paul Needs was at hand in the drinks cart with at least one bottle of Dancing Water!!

A number of Top Dog matches took place with some interesting results. The Hick's boys (Brendan & Mathew) were too strong for Ben Frampton and Cran Bull who complained that "at their age they couldn't see far enough to ascertain where their opponents drives had finished". Making a return to Shirley after his knee operation Jeff Saunders and his partner John Parlane finally had the better of John Dickson and Stu Kemp although the match went down the 18th. A confident (as always) pairing of Joe Mullins and Karl Kitchingham saw off Chris Richmond & Brent Musgrove. Dean Palmer and myself had drawn Tracey Tatom and Dermot Martin; in a match of two nines we eventually held on to win two up after Dermot had parred 17 with a shot to keep the match alive and me proving 18 is only a problem on Sunday with a carefully constructed par to win the last.

There was a great gathering of people in the clubhouse on Saturday evening and its wonderful to see the facilities being used by the members. The addition by Amanda & Andrew of Sky TV is I am sure paying dividends - a quiet cup of coffee, a read of the paper and the US PGA in the background before tee-off is definitely the way to spend Saturday morning!

For one of the few times recently the car park was absolutely full with some cars having to be parked on the road. Unfortunately we did have an incident where a new member's car (Ted Rudge) in the car park was broken into and a cell phone taken. Hopefully we will have this on security camera but please just be aware of the situation and take care!

The Metro Story Continues..........

Sunday dawned one of those Christchurch autumnal days that cause poets and golfers to wax lyrical – a slight hint of chill in the morning air then clear blue skies, warmth in the sun and only the gentlest of easterlies. Against this backdrop even the park like setting of Waitikiri assumed a favourable mien.

Having fulfilled a fun morning I arrived (a bit like the Duke of Windsor travelling incognito) at Waitikiri at what I calculated to be the approaching climax of the Metro Challenge. As I orientated the compass on my seek out mission I spied in my peripheral vision a blur of “red” returning to the Clubhouse. By process of elimination based on body type I was able to ascertain that it was in all probability Bruce Todd whose debut match seemed to have finished in a precipitate manner – matters did not appear to bode well- particularly as I was subsequently able to establish that ball identification has posed a significant if not determinative factor.

Heading for the fourteenth green I stumbled across the 5 & 6 pairing of Rex Price & JD – at least I assumed it was JD; it was hard to tell as he was partially obscured by the low hanging branches of the shrub under which he appeared to be prostrate. Needless to say a few seconds later a ball appeared at speed to unfortunately trickle off the back of the green. As he dusted himself down JD’s opening words were “You wouldn’t believe the lie I had just off the fairway I was lucky to be able to hit it into the tree!!”. Initially at least the signs were good, both Rex and JD were involved in close matches and while Bruce’s demise was confirmed there was an indication Cran was up, further down the fairway AITA (Acting Interim Team Advisor) Ben was able to declare he and Savill looked even at this early stage set for wins (Savill immediately took control of my drink bottle having forgotten his own), while at the top of the order Rod O’Brien was up and Tony Park down again in close matches.

Like an experienced reins man we were poised one out, one back ready to hit the front at the head of the straight and secure that long awaited away win with the run in. Unfortunately as we pulled out from the parked position we developed the speed wobbles. I caught up with Cran on the 16th tee perhaps more by way of misfortune than planning – he was returning to play 3 having been unable to find his initial drive while he was two up that was soon to be one up with two to play. His opponent then knocked his tee shot on the par 3 17th to within 6 feet and sank the putt for 2 – all square one to play. To prevent encroaching on the players I watched the final hole from a position ½ way down the fairway nestled behind one of the many poplar trees – it was perhaps not either of the players finest hour but at the conclusion it was halved in 6’s after Cran sank a nasty 4 footer across the green having watched his playing partner three putt.

The 5 & 6 match now assumed critical importance – although hitting the ball reasonably well JD was struggling to stay in touch and finished on the 16th. Rex was in the battle of a lifetime with, as one player put it, “his great grandson”. Rex our “strong” man of the middle order was pitted against a 13 year old, someone 5 ½ times his junior and was in danger of being chased down by “a boy on a BMX bike”. Rex experienced tree trouble on 16 and had to play his third right handed with an inverted club – he then made a great up and down for five but had to watch his young opponent drop a 6ft uphill putt for par to go one down. On 17 the young man got up & down from the front bunker for par and Rex struggled a half. One down one to play and the Waitikiri player stood up and smacked it down the middle right, Rex replied with the Rangiora fade down the left, neither could reach with their seconds and they passed in the centre as they crisscrossed Rex to the right rough and his opponent to the rough short left. Carefully navigating the intervening trees Rex pitched to 10ft while his opponent calmly flopped it inside Rex to 6ft. Rex’s putt hovered on the edge but didn’t drop. As is the wont with youth his opponent pushed his putt past the hole but confidently walked to the other side and smacked it into the centre cup coming back for a half on the 18th and to win the match with an 82 off the stick and a truly credible performance - watch out for the name Jack Harline in interclub golf in the years to come. This was Rex’s first loss in nearly two years.

Trekking back up 18 Ben & Steve Savill confirmed they were both winners. Savill shot 76 with 15 pars to win 5/4 against the experienced John Thompson. Ben bearing the burden of leadership bravely had closed out his match 5/4. Our hopes dreams and aspirations were now vested in the top match. Standing on 17 tee Rod was 2 up and Tony 1 down. Rod played his tee shot pin high to 3 metres but his opponent placed his inside that to 2metres – Rod made par but his opponent made birdie. Rod was 1 up one to play. Following a booming drive from the Waitikiri player Rod played a “ropey” hook down the left into the trees almost through onto the practice range, however he followed that with a “career” 4 iron low and slicing 180metres - partly hindered by a bush, to the green fringe pin high, while his opponent hit the green he was well short and then charged the hole, subsequently the putt coming back raced past as well. Despite a first putt that slipped by the pin further than intended the putt was conceded for 4 and Rod had secured our third win with a round of 76. Despite such heroics it was all for nought as on 17 the Waitikiri number 1 made par and Tony after chipping short missed the putt for a half to go down 2/1.

While it was a fine fighting effort closely contested we came up short. Congratulations to our three winners and to Cran with the half. Great rounds to Rod & Steve Savill but no doubt that will be reflected in their reduced slope indices for the next match. Once again there will be difficult decisions to be made on team selections as we play the tricky Windsor layout on the 26 April.

What's Happening week of 23 March

It is a bit of a case of "All quiet on the Western Front" this week pending completion of the Club Champs on Saturday / Sunday.

That said the intrepid Metro Team travels to Waitikiri on Sunday while the President's host McLeans Island at home - this will be Paul Needs debut performance as Team Manager with Dennis Doherty being away. Close scrutiny of both selection and subsequent match result will take place with special emphasis on his reporting ability (yes - Paul you will have to turn on the computer and tap something out and then work out how to send it). (Since writing I have checked my e-mails apparently selection is beyond Paul with Dennis naming both teams today prior to his departure for the UK - Paul you may be in charge but not total charge -Ed)

Our thoughts go out to our office manager Cecily who unfortunately suffered a heart attack and was in hospital last week. We understand things have progressed well with a couple of stents being inserted on Friday. Hopefully Cecily will be out of hospital early this week and on the road to recovery. In the interim Struan will be holding the fort by himself with help from some of the members on an as and when required basis so just bear in mind we will be short handed for the next wee while.

Finally we are having a working bee on Sunday to help with some tidy-up bits around the course. We still have a very few places available for volunteers - just for two hours 10 - 12 - either speak to me or the office.

In the interim good golfing people..........

Odd Spots....

Congratulations to Mike Ambrose who playing in the Mercedes Championship on Friday at Clearwater won the lucky car park spot prize - a tailored suit to the value of $1500.00 - not bad for an afternoon off work and a good way to start Monday having left the Tournament before prize giving (some people would have said redraw!!)!!

Just a reminder that the preliminary rounds of Top Dog need to be played by April 6. This leaves only 2 weekends or 1 if you intend to go to Hanmer. Please note no extensions will be granted short of plague pestilence and possibly death - please don't ask as a refusal may offend!

One of our Junior teams was in action at the weekend at Kaiapoi (the senior team had a bye) unfortunately after a good showing we went down 3/1 giving away a lot of strokes in the handicaps. Alex Sloane was solid with a win and Henry Pearson was unlucky to lose on the 18th. There are another couple of rounds over the next few weeks so undoubtedly the boys will improve.

Pollock Cup was played at Shirley on the weekend and after a bye in the morning we had a half in the afternoon. This means we are near the top of the table looking for a strong finish!

Saturdays Results........

Just a quick run down of who did what outside of the Club Champ results.

Two's were worth $11.10 and there were 18 winners, the jackpot of $50 was struck by Kim Sanders and Dodge Healy - a massive $25 each. Nett eagles was struck on 5 with Paul Needs, Joe Mullins, and Chris Richmond huge payout of $16.65 each.

Closest to the pin on 2 for 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was won by Grant Mitchell, while Mark Harris collected the Bejarong Thai Cuisine prize on 18. Match of the day was a one grade stableford won by David Barley with 39 from a host of others on 38 in order Bentley Seeto, Michael Sidey and Lindsay Buxton.

It was great to see Nathan Gilbert (one of our members) who is the Taylormade Representative having a demonstration on the practice fairway on Saturday. New technology is great as it enabled me to hit it further both with Driver and 4 iron. If you need anything special speak to Nathan and Ant and a deal will no doubt be done!

Slow Play...........

Slow play is the bane of any golf club and is a hardy annual for committees when they have nothing else to talk about. While in a stroke round and perhaps during Club Champs play may be slightly slower than normal every member must make an effort to play as quickly as possible.

Slow play is a state of mind and as such it must be overcome as it is simply too easy to drift along and fall behind. As we move into the winter season, traffic on the course becomes heavier because frost and of limited light accordingly there is greater pressure to ensure all players "get around". The committee can only do so much - pace of play sheets and course marshalls included - but in reality it comes down to each individual i.e you need to be self monitoring.

There are some really simple steps to improve your speed of play - if you are teeing off first do so before you mark your card, walk quickly between green and tee, if you can finish out do & don't remark your ball, walk quickly between shots and while staying out of line of play walk to your ball rather than moving from ball to ball in convoy. Consider your play as you approach your ball and while waiting for someone else to hit not simply when its your turn. If you have a routine start it immediately it is your turn and don't muck about with 6 practice shots.

People the solution is in your hands but be assured the Committee will not tolerate a proliferation of slow play and the proposed penalties may not be to every ones liking!

Indooroopilly Golf Club Visit........

On Saturday evening I had the great pleasure of joining the Indooroopilly group for dinner after their mixed match against Christchurch. The good news is that Christchurch were deemed to the winners with both Dave Robinson and Jan Carthy being the leading individuals. In the food stakes Amanda & Andrew had surpassed themselves with an entree of Lamb Backstraps on roast aubergines with a green pea pesto followed by Monkfish and with Cream Brulee and a berry compote to follow - if that wasn't enough then there was cheese and port to finish.

During the evening rather than have speeches there was a full and free discussion about some of the problems facing golf clubs generally. I think there are a number of proposals that could be successfully introduced at Christchurch and I am sure the Board members present (myself, Bruce Taylor & Richard Peate) will want to review and report back.

By way of comparison Indooroopilly has 36 holes and directly employs approximately 127 people - the Club runs not only the club house but also the pro shop and the coaching programmes. A significant part of their revenue is created off-course by aggressively marketing the facilities available for business & social. Members are catered for in one area and it's all go elsewhere. In addition they have lead their membership drive by proactively recruiting through their Women's membership - all good stuff and some lateral thinking (which we can emulate)!! If that's not enough they have the potential to sell some excess land - possible return to the club 47 million.

Club Champs..............

With two rounds of matchplay over the weekend there was some exciting golf played through all the grades.

It is often said the Intermediate Grade can almost be more competitive than Seniors because of the players ability to shoot the lights out at anytime. On Saturday Kim Sanders proved that hitting 70 off the stick for a net 60. His playing opponent Andrew Topp played well with a 78 but was obviously well beaten. But fickle is the nature of golf - on Sunday Kim could not back up and was beaten by Mike Ambrose in the second round. The semi-finalists for the Intermediates along with Mike are Warren Glass, Martin Toon & Dodge Healy. It must have been really cold on Sunday because Dodge was for the first time this year wearing long pants!!

Paul Dunn has been our Senior Club Champ in 2007 & 2008 but unfortunately a three-peat eluded him as he fell to Nic Fry in the first round - a reversal of their International Day result. On Sunday Nic took Peter McDougall to extra holes but on the 20th Peter was successful with a birdie to move through the top half of the draw. Peter is joined in the Senior semis by Brendon Follows who squeaked a win on 18 over Liam Cumberpatch, Bruce Taylor (a past winner) who proved too consistent for Glenn Bongartz and Ian McDonald who secured a couple of good wins. Both these matches will be watched with interest as the finalists for Sunday's 36 holes are selected.

Evergreen Don Forbes continues to set the pace in the Junior ranks but he will face a stiff match when he plays Kevin McSoriley. In the bottom half of the draw we see potentially a huge battle with David Isaac facing off against Andre Kotzikas to secure the second finals spot. As you may know David's wife has been ill and in hospital so his performance to date has been all the more meritorious.

Both the Senior and Junior Plate divisions have been sparsely competed for to date but they crank up against on Saturday for some interesting match ups! The Intermediates see Alan Day take on Takahiro Koyama while Peter Hollister will fight it out with Jim McBryde who went to the 21st on Sunday after being 3 up with 3 to play.

All the best for those who are still in the running for the Championships play well and enjoy yourselves!

What's Happening Week of 16 March....

Focus for the coming week now centres on the Club Champs with the first round of Matchplay on Saturday and another round on Sunday. The draw will be available at the Pro Shop, the Office, and on the Web Site on Wednesday 18 March. If you think you have qualified please check as there is nothing more frustrating than people pulling out or simply not turning up!! Tee times start from 10.30am.

For those who have not made the cut a stableford competition will be in place but you would be wise to book your tee as soon as possible given the size of the match play field!

Sunday sees the the Pollock Cup (inter club for the Ladies) played at Shirley. Our team has had a couple of good results so your support around the course on Sunday would be appreciated. Unfortunately Dana Kim has returned to Korea so her presence will be missed.

The Junior Teams head on a road trip to Kaiapoi for round 3 of their competition. We wish the team and their supporters well for continued success.

If you see a few Aussies around the course over the weekend don't be surprised as one of reciprocal clubs Indooroopilly is making a visit (see separate note).

Just as we look forward into April there are a few dates to note in your diary already!! The first weekend sees the Alpine Classic the initial mail out has been distributed so if you are not on the list please contact Ben Frampton. As indicated this is a fun weekend of golf in Hanmer and already there is a strong indication that there will be a full field.

Easter sees the third running of the Christchurch Casino "Masters" Charity Golf Tournament with the course closed for Shot Gun starts on Easter Sunday and Monday. As in past years there will be a separate competition run on the Saturday which will be open to members on payment of a minimal entrance fee. There are great prizes so highlight this in your calendar. Unfortunately if you are not in the field for the Tournament proper its probably too late.

The Wood Trowel weekend is set down for the the weekend after Easter 18/19 April this is a major club event involving a formal dinner and entertainment on the Saturday night this is a must especially for newer members. If you have any questions please feel free to speak with me.

In the interim good golfing..........

Indooroopilly Visit.........

Indooroopilly is one of our reciprocal clubs from Brisbane. Last year when the Club visited Royal Queensland Dave Robinson made contact to improve and further the relationship. At that time he made arrangements for the small group touring New Zealand '09 to play a mixed match against us. This is now scheduled for Saturday after the Men's field. The plan is to follow the game with a dinner in the Sir Bob Charles Long Room in the evening. If you are interested in playing or being part of the event please contact David Robinson.

Presidents Report......

Good afternoon Gents,

Result from our home game on Sunday - a bit more of the same - unfortunately.

We went down at home to Templeton 5.5 to 2.5.
Meritorious performances -
David Young scoring an 83 & winning 6/4
Brian (I'm back) Tyro to score 39 on the back 9, to recover & win 4/3 - (we wont mention the front 9 or the previous 54 holes)- but good to see a re-emergence of form .
Chris Brocket who ended all square - bit unlucky on the 18th to an opponent who chipped it stone dead on 18.
And to David Isaac - ( big thanks to a big hearted man) - who turned up and played in very difficult circumstances
Thanks also to Marcus Annan ( who stood in at the last minute & couldnt quite find the previous days form) - David Youn. Jin Ho Neoh & Geoff Brodie who all had tight matches against a team who are now equal 2nd.

I am afraid this has not been one of our better seasons - currently we support the rest of the table - as we have done most of the year - We have 2 games left to try and make an impression. We have 4 points - so can get to 8 - the two teams ahead of us Waitikiri & Avondale have both have 1 tough game left - so there's an opportunity for us.

I will send out team details within the next 2 days - Paul Needs will be looking after the team during my forthcoming absence ( from 27 March to 7 April).

Our last 2 games are on :
29 March - at Shirley 9am tee off - we play McLeans Island
5 April at Clearwater - noon tee off (the Final Round where all teams play at the one location) & we play Everglades.

Thanks, good luck to those involved in club championships & best regards

Dennis

Around The Course...............

A couple of matters to report for your interest that arose from last week's Board meeting.

The waste areas on 17 & 4 from whence the tussocks were removed will in the interim continue as waste land with a view to further mounding when the fairways are renovated. It may well be that the 17 area could be extended down the left hand side to the creek but this is still under discussion. During the next week to ten days the mounding on7 and 15 will be shaped and seeded to take advantage of the autumn growth period those areas will continue to be GUR until further notice.

As yet no decision has been made in regards to furthering the fairway renovations but discussions and debate are continuing - I will keep you informed of progress. As you will appreciate the new grass is settling in well and providing a great playing surface.

In order to prepare the greens for Winter they will be spiked in the week of 30 March and sanded. This is necessary to provide adequate drainage during the wet season- given no corings are removed the effect should be minor and only for a limited period. Mark is confident the "rippling" of last year will not reappear. The machine will be set up and tested on the old 9th green to minimise any disruptive effects.

To assist in tidying up parts of the course a working bee has been set down for the 29 March. The Board & Committees would appreciate as much help as possible on this date. Please contact the office or drop me a note. I promise it will only be for a couple of hours in the morning!!

After a delay from the supplier new flags bearing the Casino logo made their appearance this week improving the look of the course. My personal bug bear is the poor raking of bunkers (because I'm in them so often) so please make an effort if you should stray into the sand - it will at least make my round more enjoyable.

On The One Hand.............

Have you ever had one of those days where it doesn’t matter what you do it all goes wrong – well that was the malaise that hit the Metro Team on Sunday. Almost from the start the reports filtering up and down the line indicated we were behind in most matches and it just seemed to get worse.

On the face of it this looked as though it would be a close contest – the handicaps were relatively similar, the opposition were known to us , we had a relatively strong team and we were playing at home with good greens and pleasant conditions. Unfortunately it all came to nought – a good walk ruined!!

There were some personal highlights; Joe Mullins followed his Saturday 81 with a good win at no.7 while Tony Park continued his consistent form with a win at no.1 carting a 77 off the bat to clinch a one up result. Rex Price battled hard all day and was perhaps unlucky to finish with just a half. His opponent played 18 one up but I think by the time we got to seven we stopped counting. As he was all day Rex was down in the middle and then on the green proving that consistency is the hallmark of a successful golfer. The last time Rex lost a Metro match was in July 2007. It is reasonable to say if he is available Rex will be the first name on the team sheet.

In the 8 spot Cran Bull could never quite get his nose in front and finally succumbed 1 down. At two Steve Hicks in his first metro game gave it his all but the 18th I think typified the day - his opponent hit a “frankfurter shot” (long and skinny) from the middle of the fairway and it was travelling at some speed, if not out of bounds at least to the far reaches of the playing surface, that was until it hit the pin absolutely dead centre, stopped and dropped ½ metre from the hole. Steve lost one down!!! As you are all aware Steve Savill is ever so slightly competitive imagine his chagrin when his playing partner went out in 35. Even a second nine rally could not save him from 4/3 loss.

Jack MacDonald approached me on the 7th tee as he was playing down six and said confidentially “These guys can really putt!!”. In spite of a credible round Jack went down 5/4. I faced my nemesis from last year Ray Coleman and slumped to 3 down early on (Ray birdied 2 & 4 – in fact on 4 in our group there were 3 birdies while I could only manage a tap in par). I fought back to all square teeing off eight but then poor course management and luck deserted me and I lost the next three holes. A comeback was on the cards but Ray then got up and down from absolutely everywhere. Notwithstanding I holed some good putts I was unable to make any inroads and the lid came down on 16 3/2 after a slightly one sided battle.

All in all a loss for the team 5 ½ to 2 ½ and not one of best results. I suspect the selectorial pencil will be sharpened over the next week before our match away at Waitikiri – a lot may depend on the Club Champ results next weekend.

Apologies for a relatively abbreviated report but I have to jump in a car and head to Ashburton for a late urgent mediation.

The Week That Was..........

A relatively quite week on the work front saw me head to Terrace Downs on Friday for the Hohepa Trust Charity Golf Day. It was great to see so many Christchurch members in attendance. On the organising committee were Maree Phillips, Robyn Gilliespie, Imelda Musgrave and Helen Richmond - a great effort in staging and management a worthwhile job very well done. Members also featured in the prizes with Chris Brockett winning on countback 38 points but every where you looked Christchurch members kept on popping up!!

Saturday saw the second round of Club Champs - generally put a stroke round in the mix and scoring seems to balloon. Despite this there were some good rounds. Brendan Hicks was again successful with a nett 68 to win the Seniors from Warren Jones & David Lamb on 71. The Intermediates saw Michael Ambrose head off Nick Sekeris on countback with a 66 from Joe Mullins & Kim Sanders on 68. Mike Kirkland lead home the Juniors on 70 from a host of players on 71.

Twos were worth $13.35 and there were 15 winners. Bruce Taylor collected the jackpot of 2x2 of $50. Nett eagles with a balance of $167.50 was struck hole 5 Andre Kotzikas & Kim Sanders. The Linden Leaves prize on 2 for 2 was won by Tony Millar while Marty Holman took the Benjarong Thai Cuisine sponsored prize on 18.

At the top of the leaderboard for qualifying in the Seniors we have Peter MacDougall from Bruce Taylor & Ian MacDonald. After two good rounds Raymond Liong leads the Intermediates from Tony McKeogh , Michael Ambrose & Niven Boyle. Don Forbes once again heads the Juniors from Jin Ho Neoh & David Young. Good luck to all the participants in the first round of matchplay this weekend.

Sunday saw the Metro (see separate report) and the President's teams play at home, unfortunately both recorded losses by the same amount 51/2 to 21/2. An improved performance is expected from both teams next time out!!

In the interim good golfing!

News Flash.. News Flash...

I have just had confirmed that club member SamMa has qualified for the New Zealand Open from this morning's field. Sam carted a 69 which placed him in the top 3. This is a continuation of Sam's good form as you will recall his outstanding play in the Shirley Open that formed part of the Charles Tour where he finished 2nd.

Well done Sam and all the best for the coming week!! I am sure there will be great support from our members on the course!!

What's Happening Week of 9 March

Focus of the golfing world now shifts to Queenstown/Arrowtown and the Hills course for the New Zealand Open. We have a plethora of club members making the journey south either as volunteers or spectators so our course and environs could be quite empty this weekend. We wish you all the best for a great tournament and travel safely.

Saturday sees the second round of qualifying for the Club Champs. If you want a tee time or are scratching from lasts weeks field please let the pro-shop or Struan know as soon as possible , otherwise we will see you on the tee.

Sunday sees another round of Metro (it means tomorrow will be taken up with team selections) and a catch up round for President's. Full match reports will follow. Until next time good golfing.......

Odd Spots.........

Congratulations to Brian Nixey who holed out on Saturday at the 3rd , a six iron heard but not seen- well done. This was Brian's second hole in one and we all appreciated the "shout" when he got back into the bar!! Di McClelland in the Saturday Ladies also had a hole in one so obviously it was a day of aces.

Last week I reported on the success of the Christchurch members at the NZ Seniors Open but what I didn't know then was that John Sanders had been selected for the New Zealand Seniors Team against Australia. Congratulations John on your selection this is a great reward for the consistent golf you have played over the last year especially in light of your contribution to the successful Woodward Cup campaign. We look forward to a report in due course.

Some of you might not be aware but Mitchell Vincent fell off his bike on Tuesday and broke his arm/elbow. After a couple of false starts he had an operation on Saturday morning and was released on Sunday with his right arm in a bright green cast. Mitchell will be out of golf for a few months but at least at the weekend he had everyone running after him! It was also a relief to see Barry O'Neill at the Club on Saturday evening after his health scare we look forward to seeing him swinging a club soon.

Sky TV...........

It will come as a relief to most club members that Sky is now available in the Clubhouse on a regular basis. Amanda & Andrew are making huge efforts to met the needs of the members so the least we can do is support them whenever possible.

It was wonderful to hear from Andrew Sloane that the work function he held at the Clubhouse on Wednesday evening was an outstanding success. Andrew , Amanda and their staff are only to keen to assist you in any way possible.

The Week That Was.......

With no Metro this week I took the opportunity of doing a bit of a Tiki Tour around Christchurch on Sunday to catch up on the other Club Teams. See the separate reports for the Juniors , President's and Inter Club Challenge. Otherwise the week opened with the pre-qualifying for the PGA on Tuesday with 4 positions up for grabs. Ant played well but finished 1 under par on a day when the putter failed to perform and 68 was the cut off.

The Clearwater Women visited on Wednesday as their course was closed for the Pro-am, Amanda reports they ate the cupboards bare of food!! Just remember the Clubhouse now has a wide range of food to cover all tastes so take advantage of the situation - cakes pies sandwiches and not to forget the Roast Vegetable Frittata.

On Saturday I was morning starter for the Club Champs, the first group hit off in near darkness at 7.00am and the field was reasonable full until the Ladies and 8.30 and then only slightly tapered off into the afternoon. Match of the Day was Stroke Nett 3 grades. Brendan Hicks lead home the Seniors with a 68 from Ian MacDonald 70 on countback from Soshi Hirai. In the Intermediates Raymond Liong had 67 from Neill Bradley on 68 and Dennis Doherty & Tony McKeogh on 69. The Juniors was won by Clifford Chan on countback 70 from Chris Abbott and a new member Dermott Martin was third on countback of 71 from Stu Kemp and Jin Ho Neoh.

If you were lucky enough to get a two there were 16 winners each receiving $12.50 while Takahiro Koyama struck the jackpot of 2x2 of $239. Net Eagles were not struck and $117 carrys forward. Nearest the pin for 2 on 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was Joe Tiller while nearest the pin on 18 sponsored by Benjarong Thai Cuisine was Stewart Sinclair. Nearest the pins $50 each was won by Brian Nixey (Hole in One) on 3 and at 11 Peter McDougall.

Results for the first round of the Club Champs can be found on the http://www.golf.co.nz/ site by entering your ID number then clicking on the Competitions Heading and then selecting Club Champs and then entering the appropriate grade information.

Monday saw the New Zealand Open Pre-qualifying where 104 golfers were competing for 4 places. Good luck to Ant and our other Club members who are in the field.

Junior Golf....

The Club is indebted to a number of parents who have over the years supported our Junior Golf Team. This year is no exception and we thank Mark Harris and his team for their involvement.

After Round 1 being washed out the Junior competition commenced on Sunday at Rawhiti. This year we have two teams - one in the gross section , the other in the nett (handicapped) division. Both teams got off to a great start with the gross team winning 3/1 and the nett division 31/2 to 1/2.

Our junior ranks have been swelled by the addition of Chris McArthur & James Ardagh both who show remarkable promise and potential even at this early stage as is reflected in their slope indices. They joined Liam Cumberpatch & Andrew Topp in the gross section for the first round. The nett division gave away a number of shots but did well to overcome that disadvantage and record a win - well done to George Sim , James Harris , Alex Sloane and Richard Kerr.

As well as Mark thanks to the parents who were in attendance on Sunday; Grant Topp , Andrew Sloane , Peter Sim (in the most underpowered cart in existence!!) and David Kerr. Hopefully time permitting I will see a lot more of the Juniors during the competition especially on the 5 April when they play at home.

Inter District Challenge.........

Sunday saw the Inter District Challenge qualifying held at Christchurch over 36 holes. Our 4 person team performed creditably but unfortunately fell short of qualifying finishing 6 strokes back of the eventual winners Kaiapoi in third place.

At the end of the first round we were second by one shot but unfortunately things did not go our way in the afternoon. Our best round of the day was in the morning from Tom Turner who shot 71. Peter McDougall was as consistent as ever shooting two 74's. Congratulations to Kaiapoi whose victory was more meritorious given they had only three players meaning all scores counted for both rounds.

Presidents Report March...........

Good evening Gents,

Lovely morning at Waimairi Beach - arrived to find Waimairi Presidents & Metropolitan teams had double booked the tee at 10am. Fortunately or unfortunately ( depends how you look at it). Grant ( Waimairii Presidents advisor) was more forceful than his Metropolitan counterpart(I am sure it was a case of age before beauty - Simon) & we duly teed off.

Some of us lost a couple of fairways - not helped by one of our team members hitting my opponents golf ball & losing it - & some wild drives from our 4 ( apart from Tony McKeogh of course - who was generally down the middle). We were slow ( apart from our number 7 & 8's who were anxious to get to the clubhouse & out of the sun - no names of course - and our 5 & 6's who played at a smart pace. - But the Metro boys - who were playing Avondale & teed off directly behind us - were never seen again - even after our lunch & refreshment stop at the end of the game - still no sign of them as we exited the car park.

I think the heat & the luck was against us. If they hit the trees - it dropped kindly onto the fairway or into the vast areas of GUR - enabling them to take a favourable drop. If we hit the very narrow fairways - Tony ended up under a twig - or something odd would happen - or they would chip in from impossible positions, I suppose we were just outplayed - but hard to admit it. The Course was in good nick - but looked very bare without the trees. Greens were a bit slower than we expected - but true.

As you may have guessed we lost 6-2.
Highlights - a very good win to Chris Brocket who shared 81's with his opponent. A good 1 up win to Jin Ho. Well done you two.
David Young who was 1 up at the turn - played an opponent who decided to have a 38 on the back 9. Tony played well on the front 9 - but struck some bad luck - which was enough to rekindle his opponent. Brian Tyro - who was not at his best - met an opponent who was all over the place - but chipped like a demon - so didn't need to putt a lot.
Me - had my chances - but was stunned to be 5 down after 7 holes - although playing close to my handicap. It was good to see Simon Fraser witnessing our adventures - "Gee Dennis that was awful" - so it was - but I did play below my handicap - I did have some good drives - but that's not what wins games - did get back to being 1 down - playing 12 - but mucked that one up & my opponent who flirted with the trees & out of bounds & bunkers - somehow managed to win the hole - in the end Tony & I succumbed at the 17th.

We have 3 games left to try & salvage some pride.

This Sunday 15 March - we have a home game - We tee off at 8:15am & we play Templeton. Please report to Shirley at 7:45am. Our Team advisor will be Brian Tyro.

The team is

1. David Youn
2. Chris Briocket
3. Brian Tyro
4. Geoff Brodie
5. David Young
6. Jin Ho Neoh
7. Paul Needs
8. David Isaac

Reserves
Richard Pearse
John MacVicar
Marcus Annan

Good luck in the 2nd round of club championships

Best regards

What's Happening This Week 2 March.....

Tuesday sees the NZPGA Qualifying at Shirley - see separate note. The rest of the week sees plenty of golf with the tournament proper while at home we have the first round of the Club Champs on Saturday. The draw for the first round of qualifying will be posted on the Club Website on Thursday - please check your tee times. Note Course Marshalls will be on duty to move the field as quickly as possible. The same draw will apply for the following Saturday.

Sunday has the Montana Inter Club Challenge at Shirley with our team of Paul Dunn , Peter McDougall , Tom Turner & Drew Butcher competing. We wish them well and once again any support around the course would be appreciated! Our Juniors have a round of their competition at Rawhiti while the President's visit Waimairi Beach.

The draw for the Top Dog competition is now out and posted in the Men's Locker Room. Please note there are four sections and the preliminary round is to be completed by 5 April CHECK THE BOARD!!!

On Monday 9 March a qualifying event for the New Zealand Open is being held at Shirley. It is anticipated the course will be closed until lunch time but please note the Alternate Layout will be in play for the day.

In the interim good golfing!

Roast Vegetable Frittata.........

On Amanda's recommendation I had the Roast Vegetable Frittata for lunch on Saturday , let me assure you this is seriously good food!! I understand it is in keen demand by the Ladies on Tuesdays & Wednesday's and there is no higher recommendation than that. If you are peckish have the Frittata for a change you will become devotees!!!

ChCh Players Do Well at NZ Seniors.....

Congratulations to the team of Christchurch Golf Club golfers who went to the NZ Seniors. Ken Fergus & JB Sanders finished tied in 10th place with Marty Holman only 1 stroke further back. JB & Marty combined well to finish 4th in the teams event. There were also a number of other solid efforts including Ray Barakauskas , Rod Hayes & Rod O'Brien. Great golfing guys very well done!!!

The Week That Was.........

Saturday dawned overcast with a dismal outlook for later in the day. As usual the morning players got the best of the conditions with the afternoon field receiving a liberal dowsing of precipitation. Match of the day was a Pairs Aggregate Stableford and was won by Takahiro Koyama and Yoshiyuki Tamaki on 79 points from Jin Ho Neoh & Raj Rajendra on 74 with Dean Corry & Alan Shaw ahead of Cran Bull & Lindsay Buxton on 73 by countback.

If you got a 2 it was worth $25 the jackpot was not struck ($170) nearest the pins were Joe Tiller on 3 & David Wallace on 11. Nearest the pin for 2 on 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was won by Dennis Doherty while Tony Park won the Benjarong Thai Cuisine prize on the 18th. Net eagles were not struck and carry forward.

Round of the day went to Murray Smith who unfortunately did not have a partner - he shot 47 points (a net 61) including 6 net eagles - I am not sure Nixey & I got that many points together.

Saturday saw the first round of the Godby Trophy with a number of close matches. It was however disappointing to note the number of "no shows" notwithstanding all members were advised of the playing conditions at the qualifying rounds. All the best for those through to the second round.

The Saturday afternoon Ladies bore the brunt of the rain and became "Damsels in Distress". They were at the 5th green when the heavens opened, they phoned home and were rescued by Grant Osborn after they walked in up the 6th fairway!!

Given other golfing commitments there was a relatively small mixed field for the Centennial Ice Bucket. The overall winners with a total of 97 points on an Irish Stableford were Grant & Janet Osborn (Janet had a 2 & shot 97 /41 points - very well done) with John & Gill Sinclair. In second place were Bryan & Suzanne Graham with Barry and Robyn Fletcher while the Cain's (Terry had a 2) Alan Scott & Sue Townsend came in third. Dianna Taylor birdied 18 to win the Women's prize for closest to the pin on 18.

As always dinner was a highlight with a plated meal with a seafood theme with potatoes and a salad. I urge you where possible to become involved in mixed events they are great fun with right combination of competition and social activity!!

PGA Qualifier...........

Tuesday sees the course being used for the Clearwater Qualifying Round where approximately 70 golfers will compete for four places in the final PGA field. Our own Anthony Doyle is attempting to qualify and tees off at 7.48am and any support around the course would I am sure be gratefully accepted. We wish Ant all the best in his efforts.

On Saturday Board Member Glenn Bongartz played with Canadian professional David Moreland IV who has played on the US PGA Tour for a number of years. Notwithstanding the late rain I understand Glenn thoroughly enjoyed the experience. No doubt Glenn and Douglas will be out and about the course during Tuesday!!

On The Road Again.......

Given our poor away form how prophetic is Willie Nelson – “On the road again Goin’ places that I’ve never been, Seein’ things I may never see again” probably aptly describes our venture away from Shirley to the distant fairways and greens of Templeton especially as we discovered parts of the course that haven’t been used by members since the middle of last century! The second verse of “Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway We’re the best of friends” clearly refers to the widely divergent course management techniques adopted by the 4 groups of Christchurch players as there never seemed to be two players in the same place at the same time except on the tees and sometimes on the greens where we reintroduced ourselves as friends.

Having been drenched the week before in Dunedin it was with some trepidation I watched the weekend weather patterns and in particular the rain radar. It is not often that the Met Service gets the forecast correct but credit where credit is due they hit the nail on the head at the weekend. I closed my eyes on Saturday night confident I would not be required to play on Sunday so it was with some surprise my one-eyed survey of the atmospheric conditions from the horizontal position evinced a clearing sky and a realisation I was in danger of being late. The problem compounded as the “Yellow Rocket” were not rocket like in supplying my morning shot of caffeine. I was for the first time last to the course!

The playing sheet showed we were ahead in the handicaps at the top but behind at the bottom. However we were under the pump from the initial tee-off and never really gained any ascendancy. Playing one up in the six spot I was better placed to observe the course happenings but the reports received were only dire. Cran & Steve at 7 & 8 quickly went behind and Steve Ellis’s visage never bore a cheerful look from the time of his first drive headed left off the tee till the time he confirmed on the 15th fairway-while playing his second for the 16th - that they had both succumbed 4/3 thereby avoiding extra fines but placing additional pressure on the top half of the team.
In my pairing I had chopped the ball around but somehow managed to turn square while JD lost the first 2 holes and halved the next 7 to go into the second 9 only 2 down. As JD confided to me “He wasn’t having much luck, couldn’t sink a putt and his opponent was getting up & done from everywhere”. JD’s woes continued and he suffered a second loss this time 4/3 -apart from the first JD never had an honour throughout the match. As usual Savill was zooming around on his cart creating mayhem and havoc but assured me he was in control on his match. Ben was in a tight encounter and fighting to stay in the match.

Going down 16 I ascertained the best we could do was to half the match. Dennis was four down with four to play Tony Park was three up, I was 1 up and Ben was two down after 14. We really needed Dennis to get up for an unlikely half and for Ben to rally for a win. Dennis’s comeback never eventuated so from there on it became largely academic. I had played 15 & 16 well but missed shortish putts to improve on my 1 up lead. On 17 I hit a good drive but left my second perched on the bunker edge with a bare sandy lie – my opponent hit his third for a gimme par and I chipped straight into the bunker - all square. As to what happened next; well all I can say is my trauma with the 18th continues unabated I am seriously considering seeing the same Sports Psychologist as Steve Ellis. Needless to say I lost one down but my opponent under no pressure had made par. In accentuating the positive at least I am getting my matches to the 18th unlike some of my fellow team members!!

Ben followed me in with a 1 down defeat but continuing their competitive starts to the season Tony Park & Savill held on to record wins. The final score was a fairly dismissal 6/2 loss and the disappearance of our unbeaten record. How to win on the road is a key question still to be answered but our home games now also assume even greater importance. Our next match is at home on the 15 March against Harewood who are traditionally a very strong team. This coincides with the New Zealand Open so we are down on numbers a new look team could be in the frame.

Till next time and in the interim good golfing especially in the Club Champs.

Presidents Grade Report...........

Despite the persistent rain on Saturday afternoon & evening I was confident we would get our postponed Round 7 match played on Sunday morning. ( we just had to rain or shine - our calender is full).

A glorious hot sunny day & the course was in great condition.
Coringa as usual had brought a strong team to come & play - which they did !!
We were 4 down after 4 matches - not a great start !!
David Young & yours truly battled away - the turning point being local knowledge - staying on the right hand side of number 9 - just gave us both a little edge - aided & abetted by me thumping a chip into the flag pole on No 16 - the ball disappeared - I thought it was off the green - but it was in the hole & brought a tense match to an end. A 38 on the home nine only just enough to secure the win.

Down to our No1 & 2's - there was hope - Marcus was all square on 16 & Chris I think was 1 up.
The added pressure of me running down 17 to tell them we needed 2 wins to half the match was too much. We went down fighting 5.5 to 2.5. Chris in the trees on the left hand side of 18 & Marcus in the trees on the right hand side didn't bode well - when both Coringa players put their 2nds onto the green- the match was over. Chris secured a well earned half.
Good banter in the clubhouse followed by a light & excellent lunch - thanks Amanda.

The team for our next game - when we visit Waimairi - on Sunday 8 March 2009 is as below
Tee off time is 10am - please arrive at Waimairi at 9:30am
Playing position subject to handicap changes

1. Tony McKeogh
2. Chris Brocket
3. Dennis Doherty
4. Brian Tyro
5. David Young
6. Paul Needs
7. Jin Ho Neoh
8. David Isaac

Reserves
Richard Pearse
John MacVicar
Barry Fletcher.

Good luck in the 1st qualifying round of the Club Championships
