Well done to the Metro team who put together another winning performance characterised by some gritty performances in the middle order. In particular Ben Frampton came back from 3 down to win one up on 18 while two of the Steve's (Hicks & Savill) held their nerve playing the last to ensure an overall victory. Metro now has a fortnight off before they hit the road and travel to Waimairi Beach in what may well be a season determining match. Next Sunday our Presidents team is back in action at home against Windsor while our three Junior teams travel to Coringa for the next round of their competition.
As most of you may be aware Canterbury Golf has reviewed both the Blank & Simon Cup competitions moving them to a home or away basis on a Saturday running throughout the year. As a Club we did not wholeheartedly support the changes as we believed amongst other arguments it placed undue stress on "tee times" especially during the Winter months when course availability was at a premium for members.
Initially we took the stance that we would not participate but then decided given the strength of our Junior section it would be counter productive to the future playing strength not to provide our young golfers with the opportunity to progress their game in Simon Cup. At that time we also sought with Canterbury Golf to reschedule mid-winter matches to the adjacent Sunday if we were to enter a Blank Cup team.
Our request was denied and no entry for Blank was submitted. Subsequently we were reapproached by Canterbury Golf after only 6 entries were received for Blank on the basis that they could guarantee not to coincide the draw with our Club Champs and to have our teams away during the peak winter periods.
On the basis of no play at Shirley during June & July and one match in August on the 7th (where we are likely to utilise the Alternate Course) we have agreed to enter a team. Over the next few days we will be seeking to finalise squads for the Blank & Simon competitions by contacting last years players and seeking expressions of interest from others. If you are interested in playing in one or both of the teams please feel free to speak with me on an urgent basis.
