What's Happening Week of 1 March 2010..........

Unfortunately notwithstanding the great weather it now seems my summer sojourn with Wednesday golf is quickly drawing to a close as numerous mediations now populate my diary meaning my attendance at the office is a prerequisite.

The premier event in the Club calendar commences this week with the first round of Club Champs qualifying on Saturday, the second round on the 13th and matchplay from 20 March. Entries are being taken at the pro shop or alternatively speak directly with the office. Entries close on Wednesday and the draw will be available from Thursday on the website or at Shirley. All the best to each and every competitor.

On Sunday the Mixed programme continues with the Wellington Salver a four-ball best ball stableford with the entry fee of $22.50 including the aftermatch meal as well. Tee times are available from 12.30 for 1 & 16, this is always a fun day so get your names down as soon as possible.

The special Board meeting in regards to membership was postponed last week until Monday 1 March due to some unforeseen absences but be assured more information will follow in due course. Any ideas to increase membership or add value to membership would be gratefully received so speak either to myself or any other Board member.

We are continuing to develop and update the new Club website www.christchurchgolf.co.nz so if you have not had a look or registered please take a few moments to do so. If you have any difficulties with registration feel free to call the office for assistance or alternatively if you call in Struan may be able to do it immediately with you. Remember the Club must hold a valid e-mail address for you for the whole registration process to work.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

The Week That Was................

It was hard too know what was the preferred topic of conversation in the Clubhouse on Saturday - golf or fashion?

The dynamic duo of Brian Nixey & Alan Scott had dressed in matching outfits for the Pairs Stableford Competition. There was some debate over the exact nature of the colour of their identical shirts some supporting "hot pink" others "fuchsia", whatever, it was impossible to miss them especially when they were joined by Stu Kemp who was wearing one the same! My shirt and that of Murray Smith "paled" into insignificance by comparison.

The clash with their playing partner Dodge Healy in his "orange" outfit was understandably graphic and probably entailed Keith Love, the fourth member, wearing sunglasses for the whole round to avoid being dazzled. The best comment of the day came from Mr JD who suggested "They had dressed themselves from the $2 shop". As usual Steve Savill was quick to pass comment until it was pointed "avocado" green shirt actually matched that of Mr JD and was something "going on" which kept him quiet for all of 5 minutes!!

On the golf front the first round of matchplay for the Godby Trophy was scheduled with some interesting results coming to the fore. Low handicappers Nic Fry and Paul Dunn had opening round victories in spite of giving away numerous shots as did the youngest member in the field Mitchell Vincent. While Tony Park may have been the 32nd qualifier he is not to be underestimated in matchplay and Gerard Osborn was always in for a hard tussle which proved to be the case as the match went to the 20th before Tony emerged as the winner. Glenn Bongartz and Rod Hayes also engaged in a titanic struggle with the 3rd being halved in two's and an extra hole needed before Glenn advanced to the second round. Good luck to the 16 who move on.

Steve Hicks & Steve Ellis proved a fearsome combination in the pairs amassing 75 points to claim first place from Keith Love & Dodge Healy in second on 74 by countback from Mark Dunn & Simon Yorke with Tom Maling and Yoshi Tamaki a point further back but one ahead of the Glass brothers Warren and Jim.

The two's pool climbed to $240 with 10 winners receiving $24 each, the jackpot now stands at $305 after there were no claimants. The nett eagles pool continues to grow as well with hole 10 being drawn by Matthew Needs but with no winners - it now registers $130. Nearest the pins were worth $35 and were paid to Jim Paulsen (no.3) and Bruce Todd (n0.11). Nearest to the pin on 18 for two sponsored by Linden Leaves was collected by Brad Clark.

Inter Club News..................

Well done to the Metro team who put together another winning performance characterised by some gritty performances in the middle order. In particular Ben Frampton came back from 3 down to win one up on 18 while two of the Steve's (Hicks & Savill) held their nerve playing the last to ensure an overall victory. For the full story check out the club website.

Metro now has a fortnight off before they hit the road and travel to Waimairi Beach in what may well be a season determining match. Next Sunday our Presidents team is back in action at home against Windsor while our three Junior teams travel to Coringa for the next round of their competition.

As most of you may be aware Canterbury Golf has reviewed both the Blank & Simon Cup competitions moving them to a home or away basis on a Saturday running throughout the year. As a Club we did not wholeheartedly support the changes as we believed amongst other arguments it placed undue stress on "tee times" especially during the Winter months when course availability was at a premium for members.

Initially we took the stance that we would not participate but then decided given the strength of our Junior section it would be counter productive to the future playing strength not to provide our young golfers with the opportunity to progress their game in Simon Cup. At that time we also sought with Canterbury Golf to reschedule mid-winter matches to the adjacent Sunday if we were to enter a Blank Cup team.

Our request was denied and no entry for Blank was submitted. Subsequently we were reapproached by Canterbury Golf after only 6 entries were received for Blank on the basis that they could guarantee not to coincide the draw with our Club Champs and to have our teams away during the peak winter periods.

On the basis of no play at Shirley during June & July and one match in August on the 7th (where we are likely to utilise the Alternate Course) we have agreed to enter a team. Over the next few days we will be seeking to finalise squads for the Blank & Simon competitions by contacting last years players and seeking expressions of interest from others. If you are interested in playing in one or both of the teams please feel free to speak with me on an urgent basis.

Scotland the Brave.............

Inner city living has many advantages but very occasionally you may get caught out by something unexpected.

On the night of the Otago visit "the girlfriend" kindly agreed to transport me from the golf club to home after the dinner. Uninhibited by driving duties I partook in perhaps one or two extra glasses over and above the norm but was still keenly aware of a need to perform at ones best on the following day.

As is my wont in such situations I determined an evening stroll would be appropriate to clear the head and sharpen the senses. Accordingly "the girlfriend" dropped me a few blocks from my place of residence to complete the journey on foot. All well and good you may say until you realise you are walking up Manchester Street "dressed " in a kilt at midnight.

Needless to say I attracted significant ribald comment from passing traffic and a number of interesting proposals - the journey was completed in record time!

What's Happening Week of 22 February ............

The golfing eyes of Canterbury and in the wider sense New Zealand focus this week on Pegasus as the venue for the New Zealand Women's Open. I am aware that a number of Club members have offered assistance, others are playing in the ProAm (including "the Girlfriend" reporting at 6.45am) and some are just going as spectators so all the best to everyone and hopefully the spell of fine weather will continue at least until Sunday evening!!

Saturday sees the first round of matchplay for the Godby Trophy with 32 players involved from just after 12.00 midday. A score in qualifying of 73 on countback or better got you in so please check to confirm your tees times and participation - the draw is out and the onus is on you!! For those of us who are not quite so lucky or good Match of the Day is pairs stableford.

Please note in your calendars that the Club Champs are on the horizon with entry sheets out this week. The first round of qualifying is set for Saturday week 6 March with the second round on 13 March, for those that qualify matchplay will begin on 20 March. Please confirm your availability for the whole series before entering as late withdrawals are especially frustrating. Last year we had some difficulties with "pull outs" for the second round of qualifying please be considerate of your playing partners and advise them and the General Manager accordingly.

This week the Board has a special meeting to review membership matters and it promises to be full and wide ranging discussion. Watch for the reported outcomes via the Presidents column in due course.

In the interim make the most of the good weather and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

vs. Otago.............

Mentioning the weather to Dunedinites is a bit like mentioning the war to Germans it's simply not done but the conditions on Friday, Saturday & Sunday were so glorious that one felt obliged to make reference - and we did - frequently!!!

Dating back to 1893 this was 117th year since the inception of the annual fixture and the Hanmer Shield epitomises one of the more pure forms of the game - foursomes matchplay taken to the 18th. The Campbell Hoskings Shield came slightly later and now gives voice to individual matchplay on the subsequent day. Although significantly later in introduction the Friendly Shield has also built up its traditions since being first contested in 1952 and the competition on course is anything but friendly - fourball on the Saturday and individual on Sunday.

In last years rain effected conditions Christchurch had surrendered the Hanmer Shield and were now looking for a strong home performance to regain the trophy. The matches were all closely contested but at the end the scores were tied at +3. The result may have been different if a Christchurch ball had not lodged in a tree down 18 - it fell to earth over an hour later in close proximity to Grant Mitchell - but under the rules of the competition the holders, Otago, were deemed to be the winners and retained possession of the Shield.

At the evening meal Captain Ken Fergus called for a hard nosed performance from his team on the Sunday to maintain at least one prize. His words of encouragement were heeded as a sterling effort returned a 6 to 2 victory. At the top of the order Karl Kitchingham & Nathan Gilbert (in his first fixture 3 under par when the game ended) were unstoppable while good returns were made by Bruce Cooper, Ken Fergus, and the other newbie Andrew Gillespie. Glenn Bongartz toiled hard but for all his bravado on the previous night was only good enough on the day to secure a half against his long time opponent Boulty. Rod O'Brien also secured a hard fought half against opposition captain and usual adversary Danny Ginn.

Likewise the Friendly match was evenly balanced at days end. The fourball result had the score 2.5 each with all to play for in the individual although perhaps the scales tipping slightly in favour of the home team on local knowledge alone. Skipper Grant Mitchell placed a lot of thought into his playing order and now needed to see the results, the team did not disappoint rallying to the call to vanquish the Balmac visitors.

Wins were recorded by Martin Toon 5/4 ( on the front nine Martin shot even par) Grant Mitchell 3/1 (after being 4 down early), Alan Scott 2/1, Grant Osborn by lots and lots, Joe Mullins by the same margin, Barry Fletcher 1 up (if you have an hour Barry will tell you about the last - no.15 - with more penalties than an overtime World Cup Shootout) and myself who after a flying start and going 6 up at the turn developed speed wobbles before finally closing out 5/3. To all those that played win or lose well done the matches were all played in a fine spirit of competitive camaraderie.

As always the social events figure large on the programme and Saturday night was no exception. Introductions of new members were completed amidst much mirth and as always a few humorous stories were exchanged before the putting competition took place. Playing the putter like a driver Glenn Bongartz was able to hit the gin bottle twice (it is lucky it didn't break) to claim victory. In a return to ages past a chipping competition then took place and perhaps more by good luck than good management no serious damage was done apart from to Grant Osborn's head - don't ask!!

Many thanks to Amanda, Andrew and their whole team (Liam & Claire) your efforts over the weekend were much appreciated by both the home and Otago players - ferrying them back to their hotel on Saturday night was above and beyond the call of duty. They may have been out of the Clubhouse by midnight but we understand they weren't in bed until much later!! Already we are eagerly anticipating a renewal of the rivalry at Balmacewen in 12 months time!!

The Week That Was....................

On Friday Canterbury Golf held its Club Captains golf day not as anticipated at Rawhiti but under a late change at Tai Tapu. The Club was represented by myself and Glenys Falloon (standing in for Philippa Idour) and while we did not feature in the prizes we made a respectable showing that would have been greatly improved had my ball not been "stolen" on the 13th.

I subsequently managed to retrieve the said ball from a chastened women on the 17th after describing it in intimate detail namely the make of the ball and the markings - "a smiley face" in blue pen - such was her embarrassment that she did later shout me a beer in the Clubhouse. For those of you who have not played Tai Tapu it is well worth a visit and Friday was made more idyllic by being able to sit on the outside deck in the late afternoon sun with a splendid elevated vista of the course and to the Alps beyond.

Given the Otago visit it was a slightly smaller field out on Saturday but clearly the golf was of an exceptionally high standard in light of the points that were accumulated during the stableford round. Patrick Guo from the Junior ranks produced the best round with a magnificent total of 48 points from Jeff Suddens on 42, Jim Glass 39, Michael Kirkland 38 with a further 3 players on 36.

In the Seniors the ever consistent Joe Tiller put together 39 points from Tracey Tatom and Ray Vivian on 37 with another 3 players on 36. Scores were of a similar ilk in the Intermediates where Lawrence Wong fashioned a tidy 41 ahead of Ross Campbell 39 with Gerard Osborn & Richard Blunt back on 37 while an additional 5 players recorded 36. Perhaps it was the weather and temperatures that made the scoring so hot!!

For whatever reason there were only a limited number of two's, 6 in total, so each received $41.65 from the $250 pot. The jackpot continues to grow and now stands at $230 while nett eagles also increases after hole 8 was drawn with no takers meaning next week we start with the sum of $55 in the bank. Nearest the pins on 3 & 11 collected $30 and were paid out to Ray Vivian and Dennis Doherty respectively. On 18 Hiroshi Naka collected the Linden Leaves sponsored prize for being closest to the pin in two.

While the scoring was sensational the speed of play left a little bit to be desired so please use your best endeavours to maintain your position in the field. Realistically the loss of half a fairway through the field turns 4 hrs 15 into 4 hrs 45. Failure to hold your position in the field may lead to you being asked to stand aside, walk a hole, or be moved to the back of the field on the following Saturday - all possible outcomes that will be enforced.

Inter Club Results

A bit of a quiet week on the inter club scene but the Presidents team continued their return to form with a splendid 6/2 win against a strong Rawhiti team - read more on Club website under Members News.

For the Women Pollock Cup teed off with two resounding victories to Christchurch against Country & Clearwater respectively - see the Club website for a blow by blow description.

Metro fronts up again this Saturday with Steve Ellis already announcing his side to play Waitikiri at Shirley. Steve continues to wield the selectorial axe in anticipation of putting out the strongest team possible and maintaining the good early form. Could this be the year for the Metro team to shine - the away form may yet hold the key!!??

Sponsors Day..............

Last Monday dawned fine and clear as we took the opportunity to thank those who have helped the Club during the '09 year. Although originally designated as a "Drinks Cart Attendant" a late scratching in the Hamilton Hindin & Greene team meant that at the eleventh hour I picked up the clubs and headed to the second tee for the start of play. So many thanks to Liam Cumberpatch and Lynne Taylor who filled those duties during the afternoon together with Struan who did the round during the last few holes.

The competition of the day was a teams bamboozle with three of the four scores counting on each hole. The Hamilton Hindin & Greene team posted a credible score of 129 which normally would be good enough to win but alas no not on the day. In a fine display Fuji Xerox shot 131 to finish in second while David Wallace lead his Bengarong Thai Cuisine Team to 135 points and first prize. Close behind in fourth place was The Little India Team captained by Sukhi Gill. Again many thanks to those sponsors who also contributed to the wonderful prize table (I am now sporting a wonderful black & white sleeveless Cross vest).

During the course of the evening the Hole Sponsorship for 2010 was drawn and it was amidst much hilarity and enthusiasm that Alan Stroud drew number 1 for Lion Breweries. The evening was a great success and enjoyed by all with a special thank you to Phillipa Idour who assisted Amanda's team in serving the meal.

Thought For The Week..................

What's Happening This Week..........

Another busy week follows culminating with the visit of the Otago Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday. Starting the week on Monday the Club takes the opportunity to thank all those who have supported our activities through the year as we host Sponsors Day, a day of golf followed by a meal and the draw for the hole sponsors for the 2010 year.

On Wednesday the Men's Committee meets with what looks like another very full agenda. We will be reviewing the programme and looking to establish a roster of starters and course marshalls for the next month - including Club champs. On Friday Canterbury Golf runs an event for the Club Captains of the Association this year to be held at Rawhiti - so that will be another day away from work.

Saturday sees us host Otago in what is one of the oldest inter club matches in existence anywhere in the world. There are two teams, the serious and the less serious. The Senior team plays for a foursome trophy on the Saturday and an individual match on the Sunday. The aptly named "Friendly Cup" competition is the cumulative result of a fourball on Saturday and individual on the Sunday. This is a full on programme especially when the social activities are added in!! I am sure the Otago Team will contain a number of friends and acquaintances so please make yourself know during the two days!!

Just a reminder that our course is patrolled by a Course Warden (Ian Walker - father of the 2010 winning Coast to Coast competitor) outside of normal golfing hours so please ensure you are carrying a sand bucket, have some form of club ID, are using tees on the new fairways and are hitting no more than two balls if you are having a practice swing otherwise you may incur his ire.

Centennial Icebucket.................

Despite the threat of inclement conditions a good mixed field turned out for the Centennial Icebucket a drawn pairs competition on a Bamboozle Stableford basis. In the end the weather held and there were some fine scores posted.

Half of last years successful team were in the money again with Cher & Shaun Xiong this time partnering Alan & Karyn Scott to compile a score of 128 which was more than good enough on the day. In second were the team of Joe & Sue Mullins with Grant & Janet Osborn on 122. There was a close encounter for third with a countback required before the composite team of Bruce Cooper, Alison Bluck, Kate Shier & Simon Fraser filled that position - judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

There was only one 2 and that was recorded by Alan Scott. Nearest the pin on 18 for 2 for men went to Grant Mitchell while Rosemary McElrea was closest for three for the women. Another very successful event capped off with a plentiful buffet. The next Mixed event is the Wellington Salver on 7 March so put that date in your diary now!

Godby Qualifying............

Saturday was one of those rare days when the conditions favoured the afternoon players - long may it continue. The predicted southerly change arrived mid morning to wreck the rounds of those who teed off early and while still more than a stiff breeze in the afternoon it did not have the destructive force of the first gusts.

The qualifying score for the Godby matchplay was countback on Nett 73 or better so please watch the website and noticeboard for the first round draw due to be played on Saturday 27 February. The best round of the day went to Gerard Osborn with a fine 66 which was just good enough to win the Intermediates from Shaun Xiong on 67 and in countback order Tracy Tatom, Nick Sekeris, and Shane Gloury on 68.

Alan Jones showed that age is no barrier taking out the Juniors with a 67 from Stephen Boyd on 68 and Keith Hanham on 70. In the Seniors 71 was a popular score with another countback needed to separate Karl Kitchingham, Glenn Bongartz, Bruce Cooper & Peter McDougall who all finished on that number.

The two's pool registered $250 and there were 17 winners each getting $14.70 each. The jackpot grew to $175 and remained unstruck. Nearest the pin on 3 blew away so if you know who was closest or think it was you please speak with Struan to claim your $40. On 11 the winner was Paddy Helmore. Closest to the pin on 18 for 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was Alan Day, on a difficult day 12 was drawn for nett eagles and surprisingly there were two winners, at opposite ends of the handicap index, Peter Sim and David Issac.

A big thank you to David Robinson who fulfilled the duties of Course Marshall and ensured we managed to complete a stroke round in good time - hopefully a sign of things to come!!

Inter Club Update....................

It was a busy weekend for our interclub teams with 3 different competitions underway but just as importantly we have received notification from Canterbury Golf that our Over 50's team was successful and winners of the gross competition. Well done guys a great effort!!! (our team not Canterbury Golf).

In line with our strategic objective to use the website as our primary portal of communication full match reports from Metro and Presidents appear in the members section under news. Suffice to say Presidents good form continues with a close 4.5 to 3.5 win away at Coringa. With five matches to go and four at home the team looks to continue to climb the leader board towards a top 5 finish.

Metro retained its unbeaten status courtesy of a four all draw with Russley (last year's winners). Lawyer Ben Frampton restored the honour of the legal profession with a birdie on 18 to win one up while his (law) partner Cran Bull was unlucky to lose 1 down - to a birdie on 18. Other winners were Tony Park at 1, Ray Vivian at 2 and Peter Davey at 8. Best of luck in a fortnights time - Steve Ellis's selection policy will be closely scrutinised.

Our three Junior Teams made a road trip out to Rangiora where our youngest team continued its run of form with a 3/1 victory. The top team opened their account with a similar result but our middle team, although they played well, could not make it a treble. With so many talented Juniors we continue to struggle with the number of shots conceded to the opposition but our golfers continue to play to or under their handicaps.

Once again many thanks to the parents for their on going support as it is appreciated by the teams and the Club.

Board Meeting Update.................

At Wednesday's Board meeting it was decided that as an aid to communication with the members the President would in days following the meeting post on the club website a summary of the major issues. Ken's first report has been posted in the Members section under news and I urge all members to take the time to read this and provide feedback should you so wish.

It's All About Me...............

In an update on romantic entanglements I am in a position to advise that "the girlfriend" has just had her application for Club membership approved by the Board and is now seeking a handicap other than me.

It has recently come to my attention that scurrilous rumours are circulating that on Saturday 6 February my tee shot on 8 failed to reach the Ladies tee - this is patently untrue I was at least 15 cms past. Far be it from me to cast aspersions on others but the position may have become clearer if either of the two proponents of the proposition had bothered to either stop or alight from their cart as they sped past!

It is however true to say that my second shot failed to reach the fairway, despite a clear warning the duck failed to move and perhaps it is lucky to still be inhabiting the Shirley waterways - I was unaware that such an indignant filthy look could be delivered by a wild fowl! In the end I made what I considered to be a very good 6.

Odd Spots......

Recently Club members visited the Court theatre for the show "Anything Goes", in the pre-show props were several New York Times headlines from the 1920's one of which read as follows:

"Marcus ousted by Dodge in reaction to Vice Inquiry"

We wonder if this has current application to the golf club?

The Mixed event on Sunday proved to be an expensive day out for Barry O'Neill who is
reported to have incurred 3 separate gin shots in the same round - there was some discussion if in fact the number should be 4 however Barry's reply of "Just be glad I am accepting three without pushing your luck further." probably says it all.

Thought for the Week.........

Why do people who only eat natural foods drink decaffeinated coffee??!!

What's happening Week of 8 February..........

The Board meets on Wednesday for the first time in 2010 with what seems to be a very full agenda - an update next week.

This Saturday sees the qualifying round for the Godby Trophy one of the premier competitions of the Club, the first 32 by way of stroke nett qualify for the matchplay rounds on handicap. The first round of matchplay is scheduled for the 27 February so you must be available to play on that day!! Please mark your card N/A if you can not play or tick the box if you can.

Sunday sees the next Mixed match for the Centennial Icebucket. The competition will be a bamboozle stableford from the Women's card with the best 3 of 4 scores on every hole counting with each pair being drawn with another on the morning of the match. It is therefore necessary for you to be in the Clubhouse by 11.45 so the draw can take place and starting holes allocated. How better to celebrate Valentines Day than playing golf at Shirley!! The entry fee of $22.50 covers the meal at the end of the round.

President's make the journey to Coringa for the next round of their competition looking to continue a promising run of form and move further way from the foot of the table. In the interim Steve Ellis continues to stamp his authority on the Metro team wielding a selectorial axe impartially - the three losing lawyers, Keith Love and himself have all been cut and it now falls on the returning Ben Frampton to restore the honour of the legal profession.

Ben joins the team along with John Dickson (Mr JD), Cran Bull, Peter Davey, and Ray Vivian while the survivors from the first win are Tony Park, Paddy Helmore and Garry Forward. The match against Russley is at Shirley with an 8.30 tee off. I know the players would be appreciative of support albeit fleeting around the course.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

The International.............

Notwithstanding a cloudy overcast sky nearly 80 turned out for the matchplay component of the International season. The first tee looked a picture framed in the 15 flags of the countries represented in the field.

A number of intriguing match ups were scheduled within the draw. Keen to avenge last years humiliation Charles Whitwham was once again down to play Steve Savill and while he started quickly Steve finally managed to gain the ascendancy in the last few holes to secure a 2 up win.

At the top of the order Canadian and world globe trotter Marty Holman proved too strong for a much younger Liam Cumberpatch with a six up win while David Robinson, from the luxury of a cart, put Andrew Vincent to the sword by a similar amount. Scot, Innes MacDonald on his summer sojourn was another winner at +7 for the Internationals. Grant Osborn redressed the balance for the Kiwis with a +7 victory while Bruce Cooper and Dodge Healey were also in the mix with +5 & +4 wins respectively.

Unfortunately Marcus Annan a regular number 1 in Presidents was seen off by the normal number 8 John MacVicar by a four hole margin. In a titanic struggle I managed to withstand the might of the United States (Tracy Tatom) for a hard earned half. When everything was finally added up the Internationals retained the trophy by 35 holes to 31 - a very close encounter.

In the Women's Section the Internationals once again prevailed with Eileen Johns, Diana Sullivan and Cher Xiong playing well while Janet Osborn and Steph Beth managed wins for the Kiwis. Safe also to say the buffet meal at the conclusion of the afternoon was enjoyed by all. We now look forward to the mid winter international teams event in depths of deepest darkest shortest day.

Randolph Cup....................

The Randolph Cup is an Open event normally held after closing day but inevitably the renovation programme has pushed it into the new season. We take the opportunity of thanking our very generous sponsor PGF who provided the prize table filled with varying sizes of golf bags.

As seems to be usual the morning players scooped the pool being over represented in all the three grades. Jin Ho Neoh continued the good form he displayed towards the end of last year to win the Cup with a nett stroke round 83 - 20 = 63. A particular thank you to Jin Ho who made the journey back for the prize giving - this gesture was much appreciated.

In a surprising return to form Board member Glenn Bongartz headed home the Senior division with a nett 69 to be in front of John Connell on 70 by countback from Garry Forward (an afternoon player). The Intermediate grade was especially tough with a nett 66 from Vaughan McMillan being the best score followed by Chris Brocket on 68 & Bruce Trangmar (afternoon player) on 69. The Juniors were not to be left behind with a nett 65 to Kevin O'Malley from Robert Ling on 67 & Chom-Ey Lim on 68.

There were 17 two's with each recipient qualifying for three golf balls each (if you haven't collected yours please see Struan). Nearest the pin on 3 was Bentley Seeto & on 11 Matthew Hicks while closest to the pin on 18 for 2 was Alan Shaw. Saturday saw a big field with 120 in the morning and another 100 in the afternoon however with a shotgun start the field seemed to move at a good pace through out the day - long may it last!!

Junior Golf.....................

Under Anthony Doyle's careful eye the Junior Golf section has boomed over the past few months and we now have a significant number of very promising young golfers as Junior members.

While we have entered three teams in the Canterbury Golf Junior competition unfortunately there were insufficient entries to run a gross section. The nature of matchplay golf with juniors means our low handicappers are prejudiced by the huge number of shots they have to concede. For example Henry Pearson shot a par 72 for a nett 66 and lost 7/6 having to give away 22 shots.

The first round was held at Hororata on Sunday where we finished with one win and two losses after a very early start. Congratulations to the team of Tom Pearson, Marcel Boet, Alex Sloane and Jimmy Philip who secured the win. I am told the turnout of the Christchurch teams in their red and black was immaculate and they all looked the part. This week they venture out to Rangiora for the second round and we wish them all the best.

Many thanks to Mark Harris, Bryan Pearson, & Andrew Sloane and all the other parents for their support and help I am confident we are in for a bumper season.

The Not So Junior Golf..........

This year Garry Forward has been responsible for organising the Over 50's inter club team and in a feat of remarkable administrative ability he seems to have put together a programme that did not entail him having to put in a appearance as a Team member on the fairways.

The final round was held at McLean's Island on Sunday with the Club being represented by Bruce Taylor (74), Rod Hayes (75), Tony Park (81) & Dennis Maguire (n/c). Our maths shows us as being the winners of the gross section but we are currently confirming calculations with Canterbury Golf who seem to have arrived at a different solution.

In any event many thanks to Garry and all those who participated in the team over the course of the season very well done. Further information will follow in due course.

In The Clubhouse................

For those of us who partake in the occasional indulgence of caffeine a change recently slipped almost unnoticed into the Clubhouse. Amanda and Andrew have reviewed their source of supply with a resultant shift to Humming Bird beans and by necessity this has also culminated in the addition of a new espresso machine. I can assure you the resulting brew is most drinkable so I urge you do sample a cup to satisfy your own desires (cravings).

Also remember Amanda & Andrew run a Happy Hour at the Club on Friday evenings so if you are looking for a place for a quite tipple with an outstanding vista make a trip to the Clubhouse.

Odd Spot..........

Barry Fletcher's golf received an unexpected boost this week; when making an unusual appearance with the mid week men he was drawn to play with George Cain (92), David Hay (88) and Stewart Betty (82) . Apparently being the youngest in the group and being called "sonny" puts a spring in the step and an extra swoosh in the swing!! I am reliably informed Barry's "standing" within his normal Wednesday group is substantially different!

Peter Thomson Visits.............

Unexpectedly as a result of attending the New Zealand Open and an accommodating travel schedule Peter Thomson was able to pay a flying visit the course last Tuesday.

The Board were keen to have Peter's input into a number of proposed course enhancements in particular; the development of the "waste areas" on 4 & 17, the tee development and traffic management around the 3 tee especially when moving from the second green, and further modifications to the 6 fairway. Plenty of food for thought was provided by Peter and the Board will be in a position to have some well reasoned discussions on these and other matters during the year.

Peter was enthusiastic in regards to the general state and presentation of the course and very supportive of the moves made in respect of the rough management. The new fairways greatly impressed him and he is now considering trialling the same grass mixture in Melbourne to see if the similar results can be obtained. After so many options being discussed Peter gave his seal of approval to the development of the waterway between 7 & 8 believing it was now an outstanding feature of the course.

What's Happening the Week of February 1st............

With the new season now open it seems there are two days of golf every weekend for the foreseeable future!!

This Saturday, 6 February, we play the Randolph Trophy an Open event sponsored by PGF. This is always an enjoyable tournament especially as it is a stroke round (3 grades) so early in the year (not) Normally this event is in November/December but the renovation programme has prompted a change of date. There are shotgun starts at 8.00am and 12.30pm - so get your names down as soon as possible.

Sunday sees the first International Match for the 2010 year in the matchplay format with all games being played out to the 18th. If you wish to play speak to David Robinson (Internationals) or Bryan Graham/ Paddy Helmore (Kiwis) as soon as possible. This is a unique event in the Club calendar and well worthwhile making time to participate, a small entry fee applies which includes the meal after.

Finally our over 50's team plays the final round at McLean's Island on Sunday. The team is currently leading the gross grade so we wish them well in there endeavours.

Important Dates.........

Members will have received the "Blue Book" last week and if as yet you have not gone through with you highlighter to pencil in the important dates for the next few months please take note of the following fixtures:

The Otago Club visits on the 20 & 21 February in what will be another exciting chapter in the long history of this encounter. The Club Champs qualifying rounds have been set for 6 & 13 March with the matchplay following on the next two weekends. The Top Dog entry form for the Ralph Beadel Memorial Salver is open but closes on 14 February. The Ringers competition is up and running with entry at the proshop.

The Shootout sponsored by the Shirley Links Golf Shop will open on the Wood Trowel weekend being April 17 & !8. For those who play in the Mixed events the Centennial Ice Bucket is scheduled for the 14 February which is the date entries for the Page Family Trophy close.

New Era For Metro.............

The tenure of Steve Ellis as Metro Manager started on a positive note with a hard fought victory at home over Windsor 4 1/2 to 3 1/2. Leading from the front at the competitive number eight position Steve blitzed his opposition on the back nine to secure a 2/1 victory.

In the 3 & 4 positions left handers Garry Forward and Paddy Helmore were making their Metro debuts and exercised their considerable match play experience to gain important points. Paddy was successful with a 3/2 victory while Garry result was a well deserved half after his opponent birdied 18 to get back to square. At number 1 the ever consistent Tony Park ensured we had an early victory with a 5/4 win.

Each having 3.5 in the hutch so to speak it now all relied on the number 2 game where Keith Love had drawn the Windsor "young gun". Reports throughout the round had indicated a close result and Steve now following the last match looked extremely nervous. The bush telegraph indicted that it was all square playing the last. Keith hit the middle of the fairway and played a solid second into the middle of the green to leave an uphill putt for birdie. The Windsor no.2 had strayed to the left and over hit his second to be just off the green behind the pin.

His chip down ran close to the hole but sneaked on past the hole leaving a knee knocker back. Keith's birdie lipped the cup but spun out leaving him with a par 4, trying to take the break out of the putt the youngster struck it firmly but unfortunately past the right hand each to concede a won up win to Keith.

A good start to the season only plighted by the fact that the 3 lawyers in the team all lost albeit by small margins. The next two rounds are also at home so with some application the team could have a flying start to the competition. The next outing is against the old foe Russley as the team looks to turn around the disaster that was last years result.
