Our Woodward Cup Team commenced the defence of their title on Sunday on their home course of Shirley against Clearwater. With a number of changes since last season the performance of the new look combination was eagerly awaited.
At the top of the order new no.1 and Captain, Tom Turner and a returning Nathan Gilbert at 2 were both successful 4/3 and 3/2 respectively. At the bottom of the order the experienced pairing of "JB" Sanders and Peter MacDougall proved too much for the much younger Cadenhead brothers James & Oscar. In the middle match a battle royal developed with Scotty Adams securing a half while Adian Millar was unlucky to loss one down. So a successful 4 1/2 to 1 1/2 victory to start the season. The next two rounds are scheduled for Waimairi Beach on Sunday against Kaiapoi and Avondale.
The Blank Cup team also started well against Waimairi at Russley with a 6/2 victory so congratulations to them especially the winners Ken Fergus, Ian MacDonald, Drew Butcher, Simon Yorke, Charlie Whitwham & Peter Sim. Unfortunately our Simon team did not fare quite so well with 2 losses although the match against Avondale was especially close. With a number of younger players in the mix our team is performing well and success will not be too far away but the experience for our Juniors will be invaluable going forward in the season.
