Given two losses last week, Sunday's rounds of Woodward Cup took on special significance. After seven days of contemplation and soul searching the team took responsibility and stood up to be counted. In the morning there was a victory 3 1/2 - 2 1/2 over last years beaten finalists Windsor and following that in the afternoon the home team of Weedons were seen off 5 - 1.
Solid performances were recorded by Mitchell Vincent and Peter McDougall who both had two wins and Liam Cumberpatch with a half (of crucial importance in the morning) and a win . Tom Turner continues to show a growing maturity at number one and put behind him a disappointing morning round to bounce back later in the day and improve his record to 4 wins 1 loss.
Overall the Woodward competition is being closely contested with a number of "upsets". The early leaders are Coringa from Kaiapoi in second and Avondale in third. Currently we are tied in fourth with Russley and Templeton but with a number of other teams still in play-off contention. The next round at Windsor on Sunday will play a large part in determining the overall outcome so we are expecting a continuation of the form and determination shown at Weedons.
Our young Simon team continued its battle with more experienced opposition by recording a half in the morning and a loss in the afternoon. Manager Rod Hayes reports that the team is not making it easy for the opponents with numerous matches going the full 18 holes. While the results may not be outstanding the "blooding" of young players will in future years greatly benefit the Club in all competitions.
Unfortunately our Blank team suffered two losses at Templeton where their season has been disrupted by unavailabilities and therefore being unable to consistently field the strongest combination. They look to turn matters around at Coringa next week while Simon heads to Harewood New.
