What's Happening Week of 31 August...........

Apparently we are having a Health & Safety inspection of our premises on Thursday - I immediately offered to go sick but the Regional Manager said "NO" I definitely had to tidy my office. Given I now reside in an over sized broom closet I am firmly of the view that the floor is usable space and so is every square inch of the desk, so the next few days of my life will be spent in the throes of removing or minimising hazards, filing and tidying without even the hope of a visitation on Ashburton!

On the golfing front Saturday sees the playing of the 13th round of the shootout in a Stableford three grades competition. Time is running out so you better get those good scores in now or run the risk of missing out. Thankfully the course is providing every opportunity for success so go and do your bit.

The Silver Fox Memorial Trophy in memory of Richard Mercer will be played this Sunday, if you wish to participate put your name down at the pro shop or speak with Bryan Graham. A number of the competitions continue to move on so make sure the Campbell Cup round has been played and you are up to date in the Page Trophy for mixed couples.

Just as a memory jogger Sunday is Fathers Day, that apart, it now seems relatively quiet so enjoy the week as we officially move into Spring (watch that grass grow)!!

I will see you at Shirley if not before!

Editorial Rant...........

Every now and again I think a bit of controversy and lateral thinking is healthy in fostering a dynamic and forward thinking mindset. So after nearly 9 months I may be brave enough every now and then to throw something out there and gauge the reaction. So here goes........

Is it time that we finally faced up to the fact that we need to be able to use two starting holes as a regular feature and moved from the traditional layout to the Alternate Course permanently? As I pen this heresy I hear departed members turning in their graves and the older membership checking for the next AGM but let's have a constructive debate around the issue. The opening proposition I say is "When we have finished the fairway renovations lets re-launch Shirley Links with two separate nines".

I know the arguments against of which there are four - It's a longer walk (well we are partly doing it for the exercise so what's the problem and you can always use a cart), the nines are unbalanced in terms of difficulty(let's rate the holes 1 to 18 irrespective of where they fall on the card), you have to cross the road twice (we do need to consider the traffic implications and look at creating walkways and safer crossing sites), and there are health and safety issues in moving from greens to tees (this is within our control so why don't we have a look at it and see where we can improve it's only on a few holes after all).

To maximise the use of the course, provide a more attractive option for new members, and "cash in" on the movement to 9 hole golf in my mind the answer is a foregone conclusion but what do you the members think I am interested to hear?? Please note these are my personal views and do not necessarily reflect the view of the Board and/or its committees.

Inter Club Results.................

This week Blank Cup took time off but next Sunday is a big day for them at Avondale when they play Windsor and Harewood. Win these two matches and they will be in the playoffs!! Good luck to Rod O'Brien and the team - watch out for those trees!!

Our Simon Team was away at Harewood New for the latest round and while they could not score another win once again they were highly competitive. Manager Rod Hayes led from the front with two wins and a number of matches went the full 18 with hard earned halves. While we accept this is very much a 'building' year we wish the team all the best for their final round at Templeton where they play Waimairi and Windsor.

With two wins last week the Woodward team put themselves back in the hunt but continued success at Windsor was required to ensure playoff contention. In the morning round played in blustery conditions there was a ding dong battle with other title aspirants Templeton. Wins at the top of the order to Tom Turner and Peter McDougall (at the 18th) combined with Nathan Gilbert at 6 and a half from Liam Cumberpatch saw us home 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 in a match that perhaps we should have won by more.

In the afternoon we faced off against the early competition leaders Coringa but it seemed as though we had nothing left in the tank and tumbled to a 5/1 loss - well done Nathan Gilbert in preventing a white wash. The weekend was definitely a learning experience for not just the younger members of the team and one on which they will be required to draw in the last round.

A trip northwards to Kaiapoi is scheduled for Sunday and the reality is that two wins are required to advance further. The morning game is against Waimairi who have inconsistent form while the final and perhaps vital match is in the afternoon against Russley. Currently we sit tied for fourth but behind Templeton on matches won so our fate may not be entirely in our own hands especially as Templeton have a slightly easier run home.

Many thanks to all the Club members who caddied for or supported the team on Sunday the team was most appreciative but we really do need another huge turn out on Sunday to get the boys home and into the finals!

ET Phone Home.............

The Blog sometimes has unusual requests - MJR &/or JLR (you know who you are & there is no need to be embarrassed) could you please phone home your Mother is worried!!

The first non related reader who is able to decipher from who & to whom this cryptic message is addressed may qualify for a glass of Sav Blanc with my compliments. Phone, text, and email replies accepted - judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into! Rod & Rose you are not eligible either!

Four Flat Whites In Itlay.........

Through the auspice of the BNZ I was fortunate enough to attend the opening night of the Court Theatre's new production, Four Flat Whites in Italy written by Roger Hall. I thoroughly recommend this to any of you who are in the lucky position of being able to secure tickets (as at opening 82% of season had been sold!!!).

As always with Roger Hall be ready to have a laugh at your own expense as the nuances of New Zealand life are ruthlessly exposed for your hilarity. The story revolves around two couples on holiday together in Italy being the trip of a lifetime for one. For those of us who have shared holidays with friends this may be quite close to the bone, nevertheless, go and enjoy I did!!!

Shirwater Trophy..........

Given the closure of Shirley for the matchplay alternative golf was scheduled for the weekend. The Clearwater match was over subscribed but with reciprocal rights at other Clubs everyone who wanted to play got a game somewhere.

Probably the less said about the Clearwater match the better as we were clearly and unequivocally out played. Needless to say the Trophy now resides at Clearwater not Shirley. The scoring calculated on averaging the stableford of the top 75% of cards gave a victory margin of over 2 points indicating the superior scoring by the opposition. In our defence the conditions were harsh and entirely foreign to the Christchurch contingent!

There were some highlights Grant Adamson was the leading light with the best individual score of a highly creditable 43 points. Thereafter Christchurch names were few and far between but congratulations to Bruce Todd and Tracy Tatom making it onto the prize list but unfortunately not one of the Christchurch Women made it into the winners circle.

In grudge matches at the top of the order Ant Doyle and myself defeated Robin Clements and Ingrid Cadenhead largely through the good play of Ant who shot even par notwithstanding the prevailing gales. Brian Ronan and Bryan Andrews were seeking redemption following their February defeat but alas they were put to the sword once again by Marty Fuller and Phil Donnithorne. Needless to say bottles of red wine appeared on the table top at the expense of Brian & Bryan.

Despite our defeat I believe all enjoyed the challenge of Clearwater particularly with the course changes (a new bunker on 5 and lots more water on the front 9) and the subsequent comradeship of the Members Lounge. We will extract our revenge in 2010!

Canterbury Womens Provincial Matchplay...........

On Friday morning a field of 60 lined up for 2 rounds of stroke play qualifying in the 2009 Matchplay Championship. Caddying for my mixed partner Kate Shier we were at the front of one half of the field, playing the alternate course and in threes, we completed the morning round in just under 3 hours 55 and the afternoon 18 in 3 hours 45 (we were having our first sav in the Clubhouse at 4.15). I understand that it may not have been as quick at the back of the field.

To win the Matchplay title you have to complete 6 rounds of golf so it is no easy ask particularly in the varied conditions encountered over the three days. The top section of 16 saw a number of competitive matches during the course of the knockouts but in the the semi finals Catherine Knight prevailed over Jessica Guenzerodt and Anita Harkerss was a 4/3 winner over Robyn Pullar.

In the afternoon match Catherine Knight proved too strong for Anita Harkerss in a game that went to the 18th but finished 2 up in her favour. In the second section of 16 two Christchurch members, Nicky Webb and Kate Shier, fought out the final with Nicky being the eventual winner 3/2. It was a great effort by Kate to progress so far through the field given the competition is played "off the stick" and her handicap is 10.

Thought For The Week..........

Boys will be always be Boys but one day Girls will be Women!!!

What's Happening Week of 24 August...........

The Canterbury Women's Provincial Matchplay Championships take centre stage at Shirley this week with a practice round on Thursday afternoon, two rounds of qualifying strokeplay on Friday (I will be caddying for Kate Shier) and then the matchplay rounds on Saturday and Sunday. All the best to the our members who are playing and to the organising committee - may the weather gods smile upon you.

For the rest of us, or at least some of us, there is the pilgrimage to Clearwater for the away round of the Shirwater Trophy. Unfortunately we have been hugely over subscribed by members wishing to participate so at this stage we are confirming the maximum numbers that are able to be accommodated and are arranging for tee times at other courses for the excess. If by chance you are not in the Clearwater match you will be contacted by the office with the available alternatives. For those playing the event also incorporates at meal afterwards at a total cost of $30= registration at Clearwater from 10.00am onwards.

On Monday Evening the Board will be meeting with both the Men's & Women's Committees in a forum lead by David Robinson to look at Membership Strategies and how we may advance the interests of the Club. The proposed Agenda raises substantial issues of interest so hopefully we will have a thought provoking gathering.

I make the journey to the Club again on Tuesday for a meeting of the Social Committee as we review the Wine Tasting Evening and look ahead to other possible functions. Any suggestions before then would be greatly appreciated. Normally I would make an effort to have a wine on Wednesday but I suspect that Amanda may be sick of me by then so that remains up in the air as yet!

On a personal note I remain in Christchurch all week but the calendar has already been hit by a cancellation so one never knows. Last week I got to make an unscheduled trip to Ashburton - how lucky can you get!!

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

From Oz...............

The following report owes nothing to my skills but solely to those of our roving reporter Charles Whitwham and his report on the Bledisloe Cup Golf Match:

Wednesday 19 Aug

We met at the airport at 1345 hrs as agreed. Proceedings got off to a wonderful start with one member having to phone his wife to ask her to return to the airport as he had left his jacket on the back seat of the car! Another member decided to go through Customs soon after check-in and was then phoning on his mobile to find out where the rest of us had got to! A pleasant flight over with Emirates on a 777-300ER. Peter Law pulled a few favours with the airline and we were all seated together but only 2 people to a row of 3 seats - and we got champagne!! A mini-bus taxi took us to our apartments in Bondi Junction and it wasn't long before Mark Southall arrived from Melbourne and the full team was together. Evening meal was at a local WokMaster restaurant, where our large group managed to confuse the staff over how many more servings of food were still due to arrive at our table.

Thursday 20 Aug

The party were taken to RSGC (Royal Sydney Golf Club) for breakfast by Leon, a sleeping KGB agent stationed in Sydney. This gentleman was to be our personal chauffeur for the rest of our stay and he was superb - a Peter Guthrey find. We had organised 2 tee bookings as for some of the party this was their first look at the Royal Sydney layout. From my point of view I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge presented by the course. When RSGC wanted to host the Australian Open they could not lengthen the course, as they are land-locked. It was decided that to make the course more of a test they would surround the greens with several large and deep bunkers thereby creating visual intimidation when playing your approach shots. They also tightened up the fairways with yet more bunkering and created greens with undulating surfaces. The green on the 17th, a 183m par 3, made our 9th green look pretty ordinary. I even received a shot on this hole and could not score better than a 5 on both days!! (anyone heard criticising the fairway on our 6th for instance might like to try Royal Sydney some time….nightmarish bunkers and greens grace every fairway…..much to the concern of many of their members we might add) The weather was beautiful and the group was pleased to have a hit before the big day, although some were apprehensive about the state of their game. Evening meal was at The Temple Of Love in Darling Harbour, last visited in 2005. Excellent Asian cuisine.

Friday 21 Aug

We were at RSGC by 10.30am and down to the range for some last minute swing fixes!! At 11.45am all the teams assembled in the Lunch Bar where we were welcomed by Laughton Hegarty, the Club Captain. He explained the proceedings of the day, including the 'local' rule for the possible loss of ball due to the crows on the course. The crows fly away with golf balls firmly clamped in their beaks. Andrew Hopkins 'lost' his ball on the 9th hole on Thursday this way, witnessed by Mark Southall. The club has tried various measures to rid themselves of this nuisance and it took a long time before they were given permission to shoot them. However they can only shoot 2 per year. Laughton informed me that the man doing the shooting was not good at counting!! They also have a fake eagle that gets moved around the course to try and scare the crows. This was the 13th playing of the Bledisloe Golf Cup and home course advantage has usually been a telling factor in deciding the winning team, and so it proved again this year with Royal Sydney scoring 153pts from their top 5 players followed by The Australian on 147pts, Auckland 140pts, Metropolitan 137pts, Christchurch 133pts, Royal Queensland 126pts and Royal Wellington 121pts. Australia also won the Bledisloe Golf Trophy with their top 15 scores totaling 449pts to New Zealand's 400pts. Yours truly was the joint top scorer for NZ with 31pts along with Graeme Kershaw from Royal Wellington. Another 5 Christchurch members figured in the top 15 for NZ.
The Geoffrey Fusion Hartigan Memorial Trophy, awarded annually for the lowest score, was this year won by Mark Southall, on count back from Arthur Johnson (2007 winner) and Glen Barker. This is a trophy that is to be avoided at all costs….but makes for much hilarity at the prize giving. Many members will remember Glen Barker who was a member at Shirley during the 90’s….he passes on his regards to all who remember him.
The speakers at the evening meal, held in what must be one of the largest and finest clubhouses anywhere in the world, were former Wallabies Bill Ross, Paul McLean, Arthur McGill (now CEO of the troubled Bulldogs NRL team). RSGC has 15 members who are former Wallabies and 9 of them played in either the Barbarians Team or the Classic Wallabies Team.
Graham Vivian of Auckland ex NZ Test Cricketer holed in one on the 17th!! The Christchurch team was by far and away the best dressed and smartest looking in our red shirts and black trousers!

Saturday 22 Aug

A trip on the harbour was the daytime activity, destination Watsons Bay and Doyle's Restaurant. A competition was held to see who could spend the least amount of money at this world famous seafood eatery. The winner spent $7, including a 20c tip!! (the author omitted to mention that it was he, Charles Whitwham, who became probably the only person ever not to partake of any fish at all….unless garlic bread is fish in Yorkshire…in this most famous of fish restaurants) It was too soon after a hearty breakfast to feast large!.....(his excuse not ours especially those who had the $50 Lobster and Prawn salad) ANZ Stadium was the evening destination and a close fought game saw the AB's run out 19-18 winners in the Bledisloe Test. A crowd of 80,228 witnessed this game and the Sydney transport system handled this amount of people with aplomb. The end of another memorable and enjoyable Bledisloe trip. Until next year.............it should be noted in passing that one of our members returned home a day early on the Saturday to attend his brother’s 60th….after arising at 4am NZ time he was witnessed by various frightened church goers some 27 hours later staggering home still in his Red Indian costume including bow and arrow. Who said ‘what goes on tour stays on tour’!!!

It's All About Me............

Standing in Pak 'n Save doing the bi-weekly shop I was left to contemplate the rising cost of the razor blades and the detrimental effect on my grocery budget. Why does the addition of that extra blade presumably for increased comfort and 'that closer shave' have to be reflected in the disproportionate increase if not in the initial outlay (they seek to trap you) in the ongoing cost? I was happy with my three blades before I was told I had to have four! I am firmly of the view there is a conspiracy or at best a cartel between Gillette and Schick!!

Caddying for the Woodward team on Sunday afternoon at Weedons against Weedons John Dickson and I were hiding down 14 fairway behind a largest shrub/small tree waiting for the tee shots when there was an almighty bang and an exclamation from JD "What the hell did that hit!!". The answer was simple the ball on the bounce had cannoned into my head and I can confirm it made a loud and distinctly hollow sound. Given JD and I both have suspect eyesight at the best of times there was some concern as to who had hit the ball and if it was a Christchurch player whether or not a penalty would apply - fortunately it was the Weedons no 2.

Footnote: I was subsequently fined for nodding the ball to a playable position in the rough rather than heading it into the tree. No blood was spilt and there appears to have been if no improvement in my mental faculties as a result at least no detriment (OK so the jury is still out on that and lets face it anything would be an improvement!!)

Fathers/Sons & Mothers/Daughters........

Sometimes for whatever reason you develop a blind spot and it doesn't matter what you do you never get matters back on an even keel - the Fathers/Sons & Mothers/Daughters seems to be such an event.

Contrary to previous advice this event will take place on Sunday 20 September 2009. Apologies for any inconvenience occasioned by last weeks inadvertent error. It seems likely a standard heading of "This Weeks Apologies" will be instituted - Editor & chief (only) culprit.

Around The Course.........

The observant amongst you will have noted that a number of the Silver Birch Trees have moved over the last wee while. Mark Lawson had the opportunity to hire a "Tree Spade" for a short period of time and wanted to undertake some remedial work in respect of some of the plantings.

Our arborialist had indicated that some of the Birches had been planted too close together and in some cases too close to boundaries and rather than allow this to lead to controversy and conflict in the future the decision was made to move them while they were still in a state that made this possible. The process seems to have gone well with all the trees seeming to have survived the "up rooting" so to speak.

Generally the course maintenance is ticking along and Mark has arranged from himself and other staff to take annual leave during this quieter period. Overall Shirley has come through the winter months exceptionally well and in an excellent playable condition this largely being attributable to the rigorous programme carried out in the summer months.

The next major task is the implementation of the fairway renovation project and in order to provide the best possible access to the course for members while 6 holes are out, acting on a suggestion from Struan, the Board have decided to institute a 9 hole hole loop to be played twice rather than just a straight 12 holes. While each green will only have one flag extra use will be made of the alternate Blue tees to provide a differing challenge.

It is anticipated that holes 5/6 & 15/16 will be rotated to protect the new grass and once again providing for some playing variation. The Club will arrange for each nine hole layout to be rated for handicap purposes so there will be limited impact on members handicaps rather than entering into a period of hiatus. Given we are playing a loop twice there will be some restrictions applying to tee times but these will be worked through and announced nearer the time but initially at least we are anticipating a morning and afternoon start sheet allowing for approximately two hours duration.

The Week That Was.................

Readers will be pleased to know that in light of the plague of mediation cancellations I was able to make it to Shirley on Wednesday afternoon (I took A/L for any doubters amongst you!!)and then contribute to the Glenn Bongartz retirement fund in what was otherwise an absolutely sensational afternoon. Its encouraging to see the Wednesday boys in such great heart.

Saturday saw the final of one of the Club's prestigious matchplay events with the Godby Trophy on the line between Alan Scott and Brian Ronan. After what was a titanic struggle Scotty emerged as the eventual winner 1 up. I understand Scotty gained the lead at 13 and the last 5 holes were all halved so congratulations to Alan Scott and commiserations to Brian Ronan. For the rest of us the Competition was Stableford three grades in a field that contained a number of visitors and moved reasonably well through the afternoon.

In the Senior Grade showing off to his guests from Timaru, David Robinson won with 38 points from Liam Cumberpatch on 36 and Warren Jones (a late finisher) also on 36. In the Intermediates both Ian Matthews and Dennis Doherty recorded 38 points but they couldn't head off Bryan Tyro on 40 points - thanks to Bryan for coming back for the prize giving as it is always good to give out the envelope on the night so to speak. Yoshi Tamaki was successful in the Juniors with 40 points from one of our valued older members Stewart Betty on 38 from Stu Kemp on 35.

The two's pool stood at $265 and the 9 winners each took $29.40 with Shaun Xiong scooping the $185 jackpot with 2x2's. Nearest the pins were Rod O'Brien (moving from 11 from the past two weeks) on 3 and Bruce Todd on 11 - $45 each. The Linden Leaves sponsored prize for closest to the pin on 2 for 2 was won by a visitor Shaan Turner while Bruce Taylor collected the Benjarong Thai Cuisine voucher on 18. Nett eagles had a new pool of $100 and this was won by Ron Williams (not Trig) who made 2 on 11 which was the drawn hole - Please note in an editorial decision Ron (RP) Williams will now be known as Ron Williams and Ron (RF) Williams will be referred to as "Trig" in all future correspondence.

The Pro Shop..............

John Sanders (JB) & Anthony Doyle (Ants) are continuing to look at ways of expanding the services offered through through Shirley Links Golf Shop. In the latest initiative Craig Mitchell (formerly of Clearwater) has joined the teaching staff as an independent contractor to provide further assistance to those of us in desperate need of golfing redemption. We welcome Craig and his clients to the Shirley environment.

A number of members have commented on how good the new inter club jerseys look and in order to fill the void the pro shop are now taking orders for "vests" and "long sleeves" with or without the club logo. If you are interested the order form is in the pro shop so see Callum or Gareth next time you are playing. In addition the Board has confirmed the design of the new club tie, which features the Club crest, and they should be available to members within the not too distant future again through the pro shop.

Many thanks to club member Nathan Gilbert of Taylormade who arranged for the new release of Taylormade golf balls to be made available on a complimentary basis through the pro shop on Saturday. In what is an unusual occurrence my ball survived 18 holes without frequenting the water or travelling out of bounds it did however enjoy visiting the sand and making acquaintance with numerous trees around the course.

Inter Club Report ...........

Given two losses last week, Sunday's rounds of Woodward Cup took on special significance. After seven days of contemplation and soul searching the team took responsibility and stood up to be counted. In the morning there was a victory 3 1/2 - 2 1/2 over last years beaten finalists Windsor and following that in the afternoon the home team of Weedons were seen off 5 - 1.

Solid performances were recorded by Mitchell Vincent and Peter McDougall who both had two wins and Liam Cumberpatch with a half (of crucial importance in the morning) and a win . Tom Turner continues to show a growing maturity at number one and put behind him a disappointing morning round to bounce back later in the day and improve his record to 4 wins 1 loss.

Overall the Woodward competition is being closely contested with a number of "upsets". The early leaders are Coringa from Kaiapoi in second and Avondale in third. Currently we are tied in fourth with Russley and Templeton but with a number of other teams still in play-off contention. The next round at Windsor on Sunday will play a large part in determining the overall outcome so we are expecting a continuation of the form and determination shown at Weedons.

Our young Simon team continued its battle with more experienced opposition by recording a half in the morning and a loss in the afternoon. Manager Rod Hayes reports that the team is not making it easy for the opponents with numerous matches going the full 18 holes. While the results may not be outstanding the "blooding" of young players will in future years greatly benefit the Club in all competitions.

Unfortunately our Blank team suffered two losses at Templeton where their season has been disrupted by unavailabilities and therefore being unable to consistently field the strongest combination. They look to turn matters around at Coringa next week while Simon heads to Harewood New.

Thought For The Week............

Admit your errors & mistakes before someone else exaggerates them!!

Editorial Note..............

It has come to my attention that some of our readers are"peeking" by reading the Blog prior to its official announcement of completion (don't worry I know who you are). My literary process is complicated and an article may change several times before I send out the e-mail so remedial steps have been taken to ensure that this trend is ended!!

What's Happening Week of 17 August.........

Well I have well and truly exceeded all blog records for content this issue so apologies if it takes more than a quick read, matters that I normally would have covered but have not this time will appear next week.

Match of the Day next Saturday is Stableford 3 Grades doubling as Round 12 in the Shootout competition. Again after last week the bar is on the move so get in as many good rounds as you can in the hope that some may count in due course. It looks as though this will be the highest qualifying score in an number of years.

Note in your dairies that the course will be closed for the Canterbury Women's Provincial Championships from 12.30 on Thursday 27 August until Sunday 30 August. As usual we have arranged to make our annual pilgrimage to Clearwater for the next contesting of the Shirwater Trophy. Currently we are in discussion with Clearwater as to the scoring system and more will be disclosed when we have reached agreement. This competition is normally followed by a meal at Clearwater and further details will be provided through the Club and Pro Shop.

The next Mixed Match should also now be put into your calendar being the Islington Cup on Sunday 13 September. This is a Teams Best Ball Stroke Net so get your teams organised in advance. Do not forget that in addition to the matches in the Green Book we have the rescheduled Fathers/Sons & Mothers/Daughters Match set down for Sunday 6 September. This event is normally followed by a Fish & Chip meal at very reasonable cost.

Following on from the Board meeting last week the Men's Committee is meeting on Wednesday and I will provide an update in regards to matters of any moment next time. This week sees me in town for the whole week with a diary that has become remarkably free due to last minute cancellations and non confirmations but I am sure I will find something with which to wile away the hours.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before (possibly on Wednesday if I can get a day off).

Hot August Night..........

I suspect I maybe extremely gullible in that quite easily I can be convinced to believe my own publicity but I think it fair to say that the Wine Tasting evening was a great success and hugely enjoyed by all those 89 members and friends who attended.

The tasting competition was fiercely contested with a sudden death needed (which was not so sudden) to decide second place but the winners and clearly wine connoisseurs were Barry & Robyn Fletcher, Tony & Annette McKeogh, Struan & Terry Cain, Rex Price, Simon Fraser & Stephanie Winter. The result may well have been different but for Paul "Special" Needs developing his own "special" variation of the scoring system (questions must be asked as to who put him in charge).

For the record the wines tasted were; a Black Estate Riesling (Waipara), a Lone Stone Chardonnay (Hawkes Bay), a Terrace Heights Estate Pinot Noir (Marlborough) and a Craggy Range Te Kahu a Bordeaux blend (Gimbletts Gravel). The wines were complimented by a Roasted Red Pepper and Basil soup as an entree with either Lamb Shanks or a Brie & Spinach Stuffed Chicken Breast as a main and cheese & sweet bites to follow for dessert with coffee or tea. On arrival there was a glass (or more) of bubbly and a range of finger foods to whet the appetite. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the occasion, the wine, and the food as much as those gathered at our table.

Many thanks to the Hosts of the Evening - Graham Watson & Bruce Todd and especially to Rex Ormandy from Vino Fino. Thanks also to the organising committee of Richard Peate, Jan North & Janet Christie-Anderson as well as Amanda & Andrew Vincent for all their hard work in putting together the menu.

This was the first "social event" sponsored by the Club in a number of years and given the atmosphere and enthusiasm shown by the participants its likely we will attempt to tempt you with another extravaganza in the not too distant future. If you have any suggestions please feel free to speak either with myself or someone on the organising committee.

On The Way to the Forum..........

The Woodward Cup court session on Sunday produced a few interesting fines:

1) The caddy who after sending his player from the 11 green to the 12 tee with driver proceeded down the fairway to await the arrival of the ball only to discover somewhat later he was on 2 not 12. In my defence it was some time since I had last been on the course - at least 2 hours.
2) The Manager's wife who in coming to support could not find her husbands car in the car park & assumed he had left for Shirley. On exiting Claire noticed a sign saying Avondale Golf Club rather than Waimairi being where she had intended to arrive.
3) The Woodward Cup player whose partner marked his golf ball with a pink heart. No matter what you say Scotty Adams some of us thought it was really sweet given you were going to be away all Sunday.

Needless to say the team pool continues to grow.

The Week That Was...........

As we are running short of space just the briefest of details: the Sams Cup for lefthanders was won by the man with the loud distinctive laugh Mark Fiebig (37 points) from Graham Purkis (36) from Bryan Graham(35).

The stableford scoring was again at the top end of the scale: Seniors - Tony Park (40), Warren Jones (37) on countback from Liam Cumberpatch; Intermediates - Lawerence Wong, Ian Walker, Tony Millar in that order on 37 by countback; Juniors - Richard Pearse (39) from Peter Phelan (38) & Ron Williams (not Trig - 37). There were 8 twos worth $33.75 each, nearest to the pins - 3 Ian Currie, 11 Rod O'Brien (again - but he only played 12 holes) $45 each , nearest the pin for 2 on 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves - Graham Purkis, nearest the pin on 18 for 2 sponsored by Benjarong Thai Cuisine - Brendon Follows, nett eagles struck hole 12 - Charles Whitwham & Mark Fiebig.

In the Top Dog Match Niven Boyle & Ian Currie were successful over the two David's - Robinson & Blair and move through to the final against myself and Dean Palmer. Overall the pace of play on Saturday was abysmal, the morning groups were around in good order but it fell apart thereafter. I am not sure what else we can do as at the moment it feels like a very solid reinforced brick wall.

Sunday's weather conditions together with the inter club programme took a toll on the G E Rhodes Cup mixed event with a relatively small field of 24. Leading home the field in the Foursomes Flag Match were David Youn & Young Kim on 18 green, from Struan & Terry Cain beside 18 green from Grahame Buist & Sue Townsend 18 fairway. Shaun & Cher Xiong won the prize for closest to the pin on 18 for two while the pairings of Grant & Janet Osborn and David Youn & Young Kim secured twos.

Inter Club Results..........

Sunday saw two full rounds of inter club and the results for Christchurch were mixed to say the least.

In Woodward played at Waimairi Beach we suffered losses to both Kaiapoi and Avondale. Kaiapoi are the form team although we were defeated 5/1 will a little luck we could have secured a half. The conditions in the afternoon turned the match against Avondale into a lottery in which the chips finally fell in Avondales favour. On a positive note Mitchell Vincent won his debut match in Woodward, at number 1 Tom Turner secured two further victories to remain unbeaten this season, and we had a very good turnout of members in support & caddying roles (many thanks).

The Blank team had a number of changes from the previous week and perhaps Windsor was not ideally suited to the expansive game favoured by the Christchurch players. A loss against Templeton in the morning did not bode well but a win against Avondale in the afternoon placed the team on a more secure footing. Congratulations to Rod O'Brien who won both his matches.

Our Simon Team is very much in the developmental stage but has been gaining significant experience over the first few rounds and this was borne out with their first success over Clearwater at Avondale 4 1/2 to 3 1/2. Unfortunately they did not go so well in the morning match against Russley losing 6 - 2. However in their favour they have now played three of the leading teams so matters will only improve from here on in.

The competitions continue next week with Woodward visiting Weedons, Blank journeying to Templeton and Simon travelling to Waitikiri - once again all support would be greatly appreciated across all teams.

Bledisloe Golf Tournament...............

This Wednesday a group of 7 members depart for Sydney to play in the annual Bledisloe Golf tournament. The team is David Blair, Peter Guthrey, Andrew Hopkins, Jim Keegan, Peter Law, Charles Whitwham and David Young, the 8th member of the team is Mark Southall who is based in Melbourne.

There will be teams from Royal Wellington GC, Auckland GC, Metropolitan GC (Melbourne), The Australian GC (Sydney), Royal Sydney GC and Royal Queensland GC. This year it is the turn of Royal Sydney to play host and the competition will be played on Friday 21 August. The format is a stableford round with the best 6 from each team counting towards the Team score, with the highest team score winning. There is also a Trans Tasman Teams Trophy, with the top 15 scores from NZ v. the top 15 scores from Australia. From memory NZ won this last year at Auckland GC.

There is also a trophy for the person with the lowest stableford score from the Tournament as a whole - one you definitely do not want to win. Roving reporter Charles Whitwham will provide a full report in due course.

Keith Love From Victoria, Canada..............

Arrived in Vancouver after a 5 hour flight and with a 3 hour time difference, then a commuter flight to Victoria. Marty and Patrice met us at the airport and then straight to the Victoria Golf Club. If that wasn't being set up then how about my borrowed clubs had mysteriously disappeared so Marty had to find another set.

Anyway, Victoria Golf Club is a classy place. The course is immaculately groomed, a great layout and with stunning holes running along the ocean. We played it late afternoon on a lovely day and with deer casually grazing along the fairways. We spent four great days with Marty and Patrice. The hospitality was 5 star with home cooked meals, one big BIG night out on the town and lots of fun. Victoria is a lovely city - one of those towns you immediately think you could live in very nicely thank you. Beautiful sparkling harbour, nice walking areas, great restaurants (especially seafood and oyster bars) and to cap it off - Marty and Patrice to look after you. Diane (surprise, surprise) found the shopping good too.

We played 4 games of golf in 4 days - too much for an old fella like me. Victoria, Royal Colwood, Gorge Vale and a brute of a Jack Nicklaus course called Bear Mountain with the most difficult greens I have ever played. Everyone putted off the green at least once and 3 putting was almost the norm. But stunning scenery. My pick of the four was Victoria with its manicured fairways and greens, beautiful clubhouse and spectacular ocean views. Royal Colwood is a special course too with magnificent redwoods lining the fairways.

Interesting to note the moves to speed up play. At Royal Colwood, each four is required to log in to a computer after 9 and 18 holes so the time is recorded. Gorge Vale has a clock set at the 10th hole displaying a time that should have been your tee off time. Both very good ideas.

A Challenge Issued.............

I think everyone accepts we are in difficult economic times and while the Club is not immune from the recession it has been pro-active in managing and limiting its expenses during the current financial year. However as every advisor will tell you that is only half the equation; to grow the business you need to increase the income flow.

While there are initiatives afoot to market the Club and its facilities to expand the membership and maximise differing income streams the most effective marketing tool at our disposal is you the existing member. To that end I encourage you where possible to use your best endeavours to promote the Club and its facilities to potential new members, sponsors & corporate users so that as a whole we are all able to benefit and move forward.

The maintenance and expansion of our membership base will be a crucial issue to our stated aim of being New Zealand's leading golf club.

Holes-In-One................

In light of the spate of holes-in-one during the '09 year (8 to date) the Board has reviewed the Club's position and resolved to increase the the "insurance payout" to members from $100= to $200= for the year commencing 2010 to more accurately reflect the cost to members of the "traditional shout" (Please note the Club self insures as a component of your membership subscription).

While there are no rules set in concrete as to the extend and cost of the shout there has been a recognition of the increasing out of pocket expense to members who are fortunate enough to record an ace. In increasing the amount payable it was certainly anticipated by the Board that at least this amount would be "put on the bar" and while it may not cover the total cost it would lessen the deficit.

What's Happening Week of 10 August......

This week is shaping up to be a "big one" for the Club with the Hot August Night in the final throes of preparation for Saturday. If you have not as yet paid for your ticket could now please do so urgently to enable the finalisation of numbers and seating. The Wine Tasting is set to become the social highlight of the golfing calendar to date and if you have not a ticket please see Amanda as there maybe room to squeeze you in (just).

On the golfing front it is all go as well. Saturday sees the people who stand on the right side of the ball have their day in the sun via the Sams Cup for lefthanders an event that is always keenly contested. Watch out for Jim Glass who seems to be running into a rich vein of form but Alan Scott could be the dark horse and never discount BG. For the rest of us the competition of the day is stableford 3 grades doubling as the next round for the Shootout. The qualifying score continues to increase so it may pay to get in an extra good round soon.

On Sunday the next Mixed Event is due to take place for the G E Rhodes Cup which is in the format of a Mixed Foursomes Flag Match played in sixes from the first tee commencing at 11.30. For the definition of a Flag Competition I refer you to page 15 of the the Club's Green Handbook which more clearly describes the game than I ever could. As usual there will be a meal in the Clubhouse afterwards. Unfortunately I will be with the Woodward team but I will be back for a drink, hopefully to eat, and with the news of two wins.

The Board has it monthly meeting on Wednesday and I will report on what I am able next week. I am based in town for the whole five days with a spread of mediation's and a planning day set down for Friday so I will be ready for a drink come 5.00pm. Just so it's in your diary be aware we make our annual trip to Clearwater on the 29 August which coincides with Shirley being closed for the Women's Canterbury Provincial Championships.

Until next time good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before.

Shirley Open.............

Just a very brief reminder that the Shirley Open is scheduled for Labour Weekend being the Thursday 22 October for the Pro Am and Friday 23 to Monday 26 October 2009 for the tournament proper.

The Pro Am provides a wonderful opportunity to participate in an event that features the leading amateurs and professionals from around New Zealand at a very reasonable cost. For further information please feel free to speak either with Struan or me. Last year The Shirley open was an outstanding success and this year we need to build on that result.

Odd Spots.......

In a travel update I have been able to confirm that Keith Love and his wife, Diane, have arrived safely at the Holman/ McLeod-Holman (Patrice & Marty's) place of residence and although no golf has as yet been played Marty is plying Keith with copious amounts of alcohol in the form of cocktails. Further reports are eagerly awaited.

On Friday it was great to catch up with Ted Jones who was down from the North Island. Ted played a round in the company of Ken Fergus and others and looked in fine health so obviously life 'up north' is agreeing with him. Unfortunately Marie was not with him but we look forward to seeing them both later in the year. It was interesting to have Ted explain the different variations of the Maori farewell and I think we settled on until we see you next time, "Ka kite ano".

Late last year former Club Captain Richard Mercer passed on and before his memorial service at the Clubhouse a round of golf was played in his remembrance. At the conclusion of the game after some discussion between his friends it was decided it would be appropriate to have annual competition as a tribute to Richard. That competition is to be known as The Silver Fox Memorial Trophy and it is proposed that it be held on 6 September 2009. If you wish to participate please speak either to Bryan Graham or register your interest with the pro-shop.

On Friday evening the "Saturday Afternoon Ladies Who Golf" organised a wee dinner party in the Sir Bob Charles Longroom (the old 19th). This Longroom is the perfect setting for a small private function with up to approximately twenty guests as the fire and candle lighting provide for a cosy and intimate atmosphere. The meal served by Amanda with Claire's assistance was superb with a Calamari mushroom and pesto salad to start followed by a Chicken Breast stuffed with spinach and feta wrapped in bacon as the main with Chocolate Mousse for dessert and then coffee and a cheese board - all at a very reasonable price. I recommend that if you need a venue for such an occasion you need look no further.

Inter Club Results..............

Our Woodward Cup Team commenced the defence of their title on Sunday on their home course of Shirley against Clearwater. With a number of changes since last season the performance of the new look combination was eagerly awaited.

At the top of the order new no.1 and Captain, Tom Turner and a returning Nathan Gilbert at 2 were both successful 4/3 and 3/2 respectively. At the bottom of the order the experienced pairing of "JB" Sanders and Peter MacDougall proved too much for the much younger Cadenhead brothers James & Oscar. In the middle match a battle royal developed with Scotty Adams securing a half while Adian Millar was unlucky to loss one down. So a successful 4 1/2 to 1 1/2 victory to start the season. The next two rounds are scheduled for Waimairi Beach on Sunday against Kaiapoi and Avondale.

The Blank Cup team also started well against Waimairi at Russley with a 6/2 victory so congratulations to them especially the winners Ken Fergus, Ian MacDonald, Drew Butcher, Simon Yorke, Charlie Whitwham & Peter Sim. Unfortunately our Simon team did not fare quite so well with 2 losses although the match against Avondale was especially close. With a number of younger players in the mix our team is performing well and success will not be too far away but the experience for our Juniors will be invaluable going forward in the season.

The Week That Was.........

The Saturday competition was for the Watson Cup a Four-ball Par match and last week I suggested to be competitive the pairing would need to be in the +8 or +9 realm. Basking once again in glorious conditions the results were slightly better than even I had predicted.

Playing at the end of the field afternoon starter Alan Scott and his partner Brian Nixey recorded +10 but it required a countback from the Glass brothers of Warren and Jim to establish them as the winners. In third place were the morning players of Takahiro Koyama and Yoshi Tamaki on +9. I understand that Brian Nixey had an outstanding front nine scoring even par (26 stableford points not that in a par competition that it mattered).

The two's pool reached $260 but the payout was only $13.65 as there were 17 winners and two of those, Alan Day & Grahame Buist, also took the jackpot of $85 namely $42.50 each. The nearest to the pins on the par 3's were Ray Barakauskas on 3 & Stuart Kemp on 11 for $45 each. Closest to the pin on 2 for 2 sponsored by Linden Leaves was Wayne Tucker while on 18 the Benjarong Thai Cuisine voucher was again won by Mitchell Vincent. The nett eagles pool grew to $170 but was not struck with hole 8 being drawn.

In a Top Dog semi-final Dean Palmer and I were successful after a hard tussle with Andrew Sloane & Dean Cory 2/1. We were aided by the fact that Dean Corry had been suffering from the flu all week and actually played in a cart as unfortunately they were going to be unavailable later in the month. The other match to determine our opponents in the final is between Niven Boyle & Ian Currie and David Robinson & David Blair scheduled for this coming Saturday - the outcome in due course.

Westport & Middle Break Cafe.......

After several days of rain Friday morning broke as one of those days that convince you that living on the Coast may not be all that bad. However my mediation "crashed and burned" and then I had to get in the car and drive home so there was no benefit to me.

Now the supposition would be that good coffee would be scarce in Westport well the answer is no it's not but you do have too know where to look. After several trips and less than satisfactory refreshments I discovered the Middle Break Cafe situated at 124 Palmeston Street Westport (the main street but a good way along as you travel through town). This is an unpretentious cafe that serves very good coffee and kai.

The beans used are Supreme and perfectly adequate but the atmosphere is particularly appealing. The walls show local artists and there was a good mixture of oils, watercolours and mosaics on display. The eclectic furniture of my last visit had been updated and I am not sure I totally approve but my favourite iconic early 60's couch and chairs were still present.

If you are looking for coffee in Westport I do recommend you try Middle Break.

What's Happening Week of 3 August............

Saturday 8 August sees the playing of the Watson Cup a Four Ball Par ( a pairs event with the best score on each hole on the basis of plus, minus or half). This is a competition of long standing and will require a score in the region of plus 8 or 9 to be competitive.

Inter Club Golf gets into full swing on Sunday 9 August with the opening round of Woodward Cup being played at Shirley meaning the course will be closed to members until later in the afternoon. Our team plays Clearwater, teeing off hole 4 at 11.00am. As always any support from around the course would be greatly appreciated by the players. We wish Brian Ronan and the team all the best for the competition.

Blank Cup also starts with a single round this time at Russley again we wish all the best to manager Rod O'Brien, assistant Allan Scott and the team as a whole. The Simon Team plays Rounds 2 & 3 at Coringa looking improve on this weeks showing (see report below).

I am able to record that the Blog has actually saved the Department significant expenditure this week. As I was penning the final few paragraphs, somewhat late in the morning, having meant to be on the road to the Coast significantly earlier we received notification of the settlement of tomorrows mediation. According the DoL has saved one nights accommodation and one days travel expenses and for once I am feeling quite virtuous as I should have been well on the way to what would have been a wasted day.

In any event tomorrow "sometime" I will head to Greymouth for 2 days and then to Westport for Friday prior to heading home and to the Shirley Clubhouse for sustenance both liquid, solid and spiritual in the evening. Hopefully the weather will have had time to improve in the interim.

In the interim good golfing and I will see you at Shirley if not before!

Holes In One ......................

Saturday saw two holes in during the course of play.

Rod O'Brien hit the perfect shot on 11 where the pin was front right. With pitching wedge in hand Rod landed behind and to the right of the hole, dragging it back down the slope and into the cup.

Playing with the Saturday Ladies Kate Shier holed out on 7 using a seven wood. The shot which was always on line, pitched just short of the green and rolled up into hole. Kate by her own admission said given the length of the hole and her eyesight she did not realise it was in until she walked up to the green looking for her ball! In the same grouping Hiliary Scandrett put her tee shot into the creek but after dropping out she holed her chip for a par so a couple of pretty good shots from the ladies!!

Christchurch Cafe of the Month..........

Caffe Roma is situated at 176 Oxford Terrace between Worcester & Gloucester Streets just along from Rydges Hotel in the premises (for those of us with long memories) previously occupied, until the mid 80's, by the Midland Club.

The cafe is well patronised for morning coffees by the legal and accounting fraternities but I especially like arriving in early , it opens at 7am, for breakfast where for $16 I can have a simple bacon & eggs accompanied with 2 cups of coffee. In a nice touch all coffee arrives with a small chocolate fish and there are always plenty of papers to read.

Where possible I occupy the couches that front the fire which is generally in operation during the winter months but unfortunately sometimes uses coal. The cafe has retained the wood panelling which provides a pleasant atmosphere however at times the polished floor can be a wee bit noisy.

For me Caffe Roma is place I go when I consider I deserve to give myself a special treat!

The Week That Was.............

Well, what can I say, the weather on Saturday was one out of the box and provides a valid reason for never wanting to move away from Christchurch even during the Winter months. From the outstanding conditions two things flowed - once again we fell into the bad habit of slow play meaning that those at the back of the field finished in near darkness and secondly the individual stableford scoring was spectacular again moving the bar for the Shoot Out qualification.

Match of the Day was a Teams Multiplied Stableford and in my four the penalty for a 0 was a $5 fine, needless to say I had a very expensive afternoon!! In first place with 348 points was the team of Tony Park, Paddy Helmore, Richard Blunt & Rod O'Brien followed in second by the surprise package of Charles Whitwham, Andrew Hopkins, Peter Guthery and John Aitcheson. Third place on 296 settled by countback was Brendan Hicks, Ian Walker, Peter Law and Ben Frampton from the combination of Lawerence Wong, Clifford Chan, Raymond Liong and Peter Phelan.

The two's pool reached $200 and there were 12 winners each getting approximately $16.60. The jackpot increased to $210 and was won by Tony Park. Not surprisingly Rod O'Brien won closest to the pin on 11, $40 and Mike Ambrose was the winner on 3 for the same amount. In our sponsored holes the Linden Leaves prize on 2 was won by Jeff Gray and the Benjarong Thai Cuisine Prize for 18 went to Chris Barraclough. Nett Eagles was not struck with hole 14 being drawn out of the barrel therefore $85 carries forward.

With the fine conditions also prevalent on Sunday there was a strong field out on the course including the initial competition for our Junior members run by Anthony & John at the Pro Shop. This initiative will be a continuing practice over the next few months so see Ant or Callum for further information. In the Page Trophy Allan & Karyn Scott ended the run of Ian and Laura McDonald while Joe & Sue Mullins succumbed to the quiet achievers (if you can ever call Glenn quiet) Glenn Bongartz and Allison McMillan.

Odd Spots...............

I have received the first report from our current roving reporter Keith Love. As yet he has not ventured onto a golf course but has been in Quebec visiting his son Andrew. Apparently he stayed within the old walled city and has been building up his strength to play Marty by frequenting the local French Bakery a mere 30m away!!

For those of you who have been concerned, after 1 year 3 months & 8 days, I have finally managed to go on a date (in fact subsequently several) and today's thought for the week, which I thought particularly adept comes from the blackboard attached to her toilet door!!

I managed to survive my performance review and despite impassioned submissions (and pleadings) from me it appears I am firmly ensconced in 'performing satisfactorily' rather than moving up a category to 'performing at a higher level' which may have brought forward a small pay increase. Looks like just bread and water with the Sav Blanc for another year - no cheese and only hopes of Pinot Noir!

Valley of Peace Cricket ......

I know it is still the middle of winter but given the changing sports seasons I thought it appropriate to get in early.

The golf club is fortunate enough to have an annual cricket fixture at the Valley of Peace this year scheduled for the 22 November. If you are interested putting your name forward please talk to Callum McAlpine or Glenn Bongartz. While there is a serious side to the game it is basically a fun event, with all ages and abilities of player in the Christchurch team. For the complete report on last year’s game and a background on the historic Valley of Peace Club go to http://www.newzealandatoz.com/index.php?pageid=954

Apologies............

I am committed to making the blog as accurate as possible but occasionally I get lead astray - for the record Andrew Sloane and Dean Corry were successful in their Top Dog match against Dennis Maguire and Mark Bond. Dean Palmer and I meet them in the semi final this Saturday.

In an update from 25 July on countback Ken Fergus and Alan Masters were the winners of the W P Anderson Cup for the Two Stroke Greensome from Andrew Vincent and Tony Park. The draw for the Campbell Cup confirming the other qualifiers will be posted this week.

Simon Team in Promising Start

Our Simon team played its first match on Sunday at Rawhiti and while the team suffered an overall loss to McLeans Island 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 there were some encouraging signs. Our team consists of a cross section of youth and experience. In particular the younger players performed creditably with wins to Andrew Topp and Ciaran Selwyn and a half to James Ardagh. Henry Pearson also played well fighting back from a slow start and being 4 down to lose on the 17th 3/1. I am sure that next week the more senior players will be standing up for the count.
