Good evening Gents,
Lovely morning at Waimairi Beach - arrived to find Waimairi Presidents & Metropolitan teams had double booked the tee at 10am. Fortunately or unfortunately ( depends how you look at it). Grant ( Waimairii Presidents advisor) was more forceful than his Metropolitan counterpart(I am sure it was a case of age before beauty - Simon) & we duly teed off.
Some of us lost a couple of fairways - not helped by one of our team members hitting my opponents golf ball & losing it - & some wild drives from our 4 ( apart from Tony McKeogh of course - who was generally down the middle). We were slow ( apart from our number 7 & 8's who were anxious to get to the clubhouse & out of the sun - no names of course - and our 5 & 6's who played at a smart pace. - But the Metro boys - who were playing Avondale & teed off directly behind us - were never seen again - even after our lunch & refreshment stop at the end of the game - still no sign of them as we exited the car park.
I think the heat & the luck was against us. If they hit the trees - it dropped kindly onto the fairway or into the vast areas of GUR - enabling them to take a favourable drop. If we hit the very narrow fairways - Tony ended up under a twig - or something odd would happen - or they would chip in from impossible positions, I suppose we were just outplayed - but hard to admit it. The Course was in good nick - but looked very bare without the trees. Greens were a bit slower than we expected - but true.
As you may have guessed we lost 6-2.
Highlights - a very good win to Chris Brocket who shared 81's with his opponent. A good 1 up win to Jin Ho. Well done you two.
David Young who was 1 up at the turn - played an opponent who decided to have a 38 on the back 9. Tony played well on the front 9 - but struck some bad luck - which was enough to rekindle his opponent. Brian Tyro - who was not at his best - met an opponent who was all over the place - but chipped like a demon - so didn't need to putt a lot.
Me - had my chances - but was stunned to be 5 down after 7 holes - although playing close to my handicap. It was good to see Simon Fraser witnessing our adventures - "Gee Dennis that was awful" - so it was - but I did play below my handicap - I did have some good drives - but that's not what wins games - did get back to being 1 down - playing 12 - but mucked that one up & my opponent who flirted with the trees & out of bounds & bunkers - somehow managed to win the hole - in the end Tony & I succumbed at the 17th.
We have 3 games left to try & salvage some pride.
This Sunday 15 March - we have a home game - We tee off at 8:15am & we play Templeton. Please report to Shirley at 7:45am. Our Team advisor will be Brian Tyro.
