On Saturday evening I had the great pleasure of joining the Indooroopilly group for dinner after their mixed match against Christchurch. The good news is that Christchurch were deemed to the winners with both Dave Robinson and Jan Carthy being the leading individuals. In the food stakes Amanda & Andrew had surpassed themselves with an entree of Lamb Backstraps on roast aubergines with a green pea pesto followed by Monkfish and with Cream Brulee and a berry compote to follow - if that wasn't enough then there was cheese and port to finish.
During the evening rather than have speeches there was a full and free discussion about some of the problems facing golf clubs generally. I think there are a number of proposals that could be successfully introduced at Christchurch and I am sure the Board members present (myself, Bruce Taylor & Richard Peate) will want to review and report back.
By way of comparison Indooroopilly has 36 holes and directly employs approximately 127 people - the Club runs not only the club house but also the pro shop and the coaching programmes. A significant part of their revenue is created off-course by aggressively marketing the facilities available for business & social. Members are catered for in one area and it's all go elsewhere. In addition they have lead their membership drive by proactively recruiting through their Women's membership - all good stuff and some lateral thinking (which we can emulate)!! If that's not enough they have the potential to sell some excess land - possible return to the club 47 million.
