The balmy Sunday conditions wooed a number of couples out for the Wellington Salver a four-ball best ball stableford (not par as scored by former club captain David Robinson - plus three was never going to win anyway) competition. The good early conditions prior to the nor'west getting up ensured that there were a number of good scores. With an outstanding 49 points the winners were Mel & Gina Campbell from the fast finishing Richmond's - Chris & Helen on 48. Third place on 45 decided by count back were Tony Park & J H Lee , from D H Kim & H J Shin from David Youn & Young Kim.
Only three two's were completed Mel Campbell (on 7 for 4 points) and Paddy Helmore & H J Shin both on 11 - 3 balls each. Tony Park was closest to the pin on 18 for two in the Men's grade and Jane Helmore for 3 in the Women's grade. The prizes of wine were donated by Amanda and Andrew Vincent. We welcomed Judith Parkes to the event this being the first time she has played at Shirley since the late 70's. Hopefully we will see her and John as a regular combination in future events.
As always the meal was most enjoyable with roast lamb, roast vegetables and fresh vegetables served in platters to the table, a peach crumble followed for dessert. The next mixed match is the AEG Rhodes Bowl on Sunday the 24 May 2009 - this is a Four Ball Par so at least David Robinson should have no trouble scoring it.
In the Page Trophy Grant and Janet Osborn were winners over Suzanne and Bryan Graham while the Hooper's - Leigh and Gary move through to the next round after beating David Young and Kirsty Hargraves.
