My trip to Timaru saw me once again seeking out the best purveyors of of the coffee bean but for the morning regular brew I continued to frequent the Purple Lizard. In the lunch time I became more adventurous and headed up to the Red Rocket in Elizabeth Street one block back from the main street by the Presbyterian Church.
The Red Rocket was once described to me as the best coffee house in the South Island and while I would not necessarily place it above Morrison Street in Nelson it certainly does provide a high quality product. Its main claim to fame is as the provider of specialty pizzas in the Timaru area and it is a place I try to visit at least once during each trip when time permits.
On a Lunch Special I had a Bacon & Onion Mini Pizza ($5), a small side of chips ($2) and a long black ($3.50). I thought $10.50 for lunch was pretty damn good as was the food! The following day being pressed for time I ventured only as far as Ballantynes largely based on the fact the were advertising Underground Coffee. Again the coffee was of high quality and complimented by a Salmon and Brie quiche which once again provided good value.
Certainly for its size I am of the view Timaru is well provided for in the Cafe stakes but given I generally cook in the evenings I am unsure if this carries over into the restaurant trade.
