Sunday saw the playing of our annual match with Avondale over three grades Senior, Junior & Masters (not veterans as I had supposed and announced having viewed the composition of the Christchurch Team). The match follows the Ryder Cup format with Foursomes matchplay in the morning and Singles matchplay in the afternoon.
Our Masters team under the selection and management of Rod O'Brien started the day strongly winning all the foursomes in the morning and then playing exceptionally well to win the subsequent singles in the afternoon to record a 9 and 3 victory. The Juniors over-powered Avondale in the morning but in the afternoon the four person team suffered reversals in 3 singles matches to end up with a half on the overall competition. The Juniors were at a slight disadvantage as we had a team playing in the Junior Inter Club finals at Templeton (where we finished 3rd - well done to Mark Harris and his team of players and supporters).
The Shirdale provides a useful trial for our Woodward Cup team which this year has the potential to have an entirely new look due to retirements, injuries and unavailabilities. The team played solid golf in the morning to record 2 wins and 2 halves to take a 3/1 lead into the afternoon. A number of our less experienced players then stepped up to the mark to push their selection claims by posting six wins and a half in the singles competition and a convincing 9 1/2 = 2 1/2 win. The form of the team which included the late additions of Scotty Adams and Mitchell Vincent, for an injured Peter MacDougall and an absent Brent Ji, will now be closely monitored as interclub competition draws nearer.
Overall it was an enjoyable and worthwhile day and we look forward to travelling to Avondale next year.
