The Dress Code.....................

I have never regarded it as part of my brief to be the fashion police and in fact increasingly I am of the view that any form of dress code is both out dated and, excuse the pun, out moded. I am no longer sure of what comprises an acceptable standard of dress and while I previously understood such terms as "semi formal" and "smart causal" my mind now cringes when I consider how others may interpret the same.

Are we in fact deluding ourselves into believing that by formulating and incorporating a dress code we are maintaining standards, standards that are no longer accepted within wider society or in fact by us in different circumstances. I accept sole responsibility for my appearance and attire but so long as it is not indecent, immoral or offensive should anyone have the right to dictate what I wear and when I wear it.

At a time when we are seeking new and younger members are we simply erecting more barriers to membership and creating an obsolete atmosphere that no longer has appeal? Is it time we had a look at ourselves and decided what is important and what is not as we move forward? Are we too afraid to have the debate or just of the possible outcome and what that might mean in defining us?
