Saturday saw Mixed Opening Day with a fourball par competition for the Sir Cyril Ward Memorial Trophy. Although there was the hint of inclement weather in the air, such that a few groups pulled out, a "bullish" decision was made to proceed and the optimistic view adopted was well justified as the conditions improved markedly as the afternoon progressed. In all there was a field of over 50 and this was swelled by further numbers arriving solely for the dinner.
With a strong performance over the second nine Shaun & Cher Xiong were the overall winners on +9 by countback from Raj Rajendra & Nancy Lim. Not too far behind in third were Murray & Lorraine Smith on +8, from in fourth on +7 Rob & Joc Davidson and sneaking into 5th by countback on +6 (a popular score achieved also by myself and Kate Shier amongst others) were Grant Mitchell and Sue Brown.
Roger Gowans was nearest to the pin for Men for two on 18 while Kate Shier was closest for 3 to the same hole, in the Women's competition. Two's were recorded by 6 players, Roger Gowans, Shaun Xiong, Grahame Buist, Bruce Cooper, Joe Mullins and Ian MacDonald who each received a sleeve of golf balls.
A pleasant meal, chicken breast as a main followed berry cheesecake as a dessert, and good cheer was the reward at the conclusion of the round. The next Mixed Match is the Centennial Ice Bucket set down for the 14 February where your pair is drawn into a four and the competition is an Irish Stableford (at least it was last year) - updates and explanations to follow.
Finally, in so far as Mixed is concerned, the entry form for the Page Family Trophy is now on display so get your names down for this popular and fun mixed foursome matchplay competition as soon as possible.
